Delhi Minister stresses on discouraging dumping non-biodegradable stuff in Yamuna
Verma paid a visit to the ITO Yamuna Ghat, leading a cleanliness drive aimed at raising public awareness about keeping Delhi free from garbage and plastic waste.
He emphasised the need for behavioral change among citizens, particularly discouraging the dumping of non-biodegradable materials into the Yamuna.
Speaking at the site, he said, 'In 2014, our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) started an initiative for a clean country. In line with this vision, the Chief Minister of Delhi urged the people of the city to participate in a month-long cleanliness campaign."
He said that all the ministers, MLAs, and departments concerned have been working tirelessly to make Delhi clean, and in line with the vision he came to Yamuna Ghat and urged citizens to dispose of plastic bags and 'Puja Samagri' in designated places to keep the area clean.
Verma said that the "Swachhta Challenge" has brought together multiple agencies, including the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Irrigation & Flood Control Department (I&FC), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and the PWD, in a joint effort to improve sanitation across the city.
The minister informed that the Yamuna Ghat near the ITO, which is one of the most prominent riverfront areas in the capital, was chosen for the drive due to its cultural and religious significance, as well as its pressing need for regular upkeep.
The minister personally began removing waste from the riverbank, and later interacted with locals, volunteers, and departmental teams present on the ground.
Verma also urged people to take the "Delhi Ko Koode Se Azadi" pledge, and to extend the Swachhta Challenge by nominating others.
He shared that the idea is to create a chain of participation where individuals, families, and communities take responsibility for cleaning their surroundings and inspire others to do the same.
Verma said that the campaign will continue throughout the month, with multiple drives planned in residential areas, markets, parks, and riverbanks across the national capital. UNI APS SSP

Trump, Putin arrive in Alaska for high-stakes talks on Ukraine
New Delhi, Aug 15 (UNI) US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Alaska this evening for their high stakes meeting for peace in Ukraine. Immediately after dismounting from their respective aircraft, both leaders shook hands. Both leaders are accompanied by high-level delegations indicating that the talks could also include issues like trade and economy, besides peace in Ukraine. President Putin is accompanied by his Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Foreign Policy Aide Yuri Ushakov, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Special Envoy on foreign investment and economic cooperation Kirill Dmitriev. The US delegation includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and other senior members. According to reports these include Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy for peace missions. Ahead of the meeting Yury Ushakov said the programme for the leaders' meeting has been agreed upon. He said that everything will start at approximately 11:30 local time with a one-on-one between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. Following this the talks will continue in a delegation format, extending into a working breakfast. He said that given the highly sensitive and critical topics will be discussed, the negotiating parties have been limited to a select group. On the Russian side, the delegation will include Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and Special Presidential Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries Kirill Dmitriev, besides Ushakov himself. The composition of the American delegation is also known, though it would be appropriate to await an official announcement from our American partners. Thus, in addition to the presidents themselves, each delegation will include five members. Naturally, expert teams will also be present nearby. After the talks, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will hold a joint news conference to sum up the results of the negotiations. Russia-US negotiations in Alaska likely to last 6-7 hrs: Kremlin
Moscow, Aug 15 (UNI) The high-level negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Alaska could take at least six to seven hours, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov today. "In general, one can imagine that, of course, at least six to seven hours will be spent on this," Peskov told the Channel One broadcaster, as per state media TASS. The two leaders will have a one-on-one conversation, which will be held with the participation of aides, followed by the delegations from both sides joining the talks, Peskov said, commenting on the summit. The Russian side expects the meeting to end productively, Peskov added. Trump expressed similar sentiments over the talks, calling Putin 'a smart guy.' Russia had earlier praised Trump for his 'sincere' efforts in ending the war with Ukraine, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier stating that much was done during the visits of US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow. While the summit will primarily revolve around the war between the two countries, it will also take on an economic form, with Russia's presidential envoy for economic cooperation, Kirill Dmitriev also being part of the delegation. Also the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, the official had told RIA Novosti that the talks will also be focused on the normalisation of ties between both countries, including on the issue of sanctions and restoring communication between Moscow and Washington.
