2025 Inter Dominion final: Leap To Fame is ‘different gravy', Don Hugo's trainer-driver Luke McCarthy concedes

Champion driver Luke McCarthy concedes he will 'almost certainly' be handing over the Inter Dominion pacing crown on Saturday night.
McCarthy's stable star Don Hugo won the Inter Dominion final at Menangle last December when Leap To Fame was sidelined with illness, but the champ is back and looks close to a good thing in tonight's $1 million final at Albion Park.
'He's different gravy. He's the best stayer I've seen, probably the best horse (pacer) I've seen full stop in this part of the world,' McCarthy said.
'You've got to be realistic and say, bar for something unexpected, Leap To Fame will be too good, especially over this (marathon) distance (3157m). It's made for him and he's going better than ever.
'We beat him for speed in the Miracle Mile, but this is twice as far and the further they go, the better it suits him.'

Leap To Fame took a 3-1 advantage over Don Hugo when he won their qualifying heat last Saturday night.
Don Hugo endured a torrid run and tired to finish seventh.
'It was just an ugly race and he ended up having a gut-buster, but, to his credit, he's come through it better than I could've expected,' McCarthy said.
'I'm so happy, I'm going there with a positive mindset, at least as far as knowing I have the second best horse in the race.
'I'll drive him positively, too. I'll go forward and put him right into the race from the wide draw (gate six).
'He's a lovely horse my guy, really good, but he's just run into the greatest of all time. There's still some great money for running second.'

Don Hugo is part of big night for the NSW-based McCarthy, who spent his teenage years growing up in Queensland.
'We've had a really good six weeks or so here and we've got the draws to bring it home strongly on final night,' he said.
Eye Keep Smiling, defending champion in the Group 1 Golden Girl, and the brilliant Hesitate, who has a pole draw in the Group 1 Queensland Derby are his other star players.

Eye Keep Smiling (gate two) is going for her 10th successive win and, importantly, has drawn inside main danger, Steno (four).
'She's faster out than you've seen lately and I think she's a big chance to hold the lead,' McCarthy said.
'The draw is great with Hesitate. It gives me options. He's fast enough to lead and the way went in front last time gives me confidence.
'Don't forget my other Derby runner, too. Mac Bon's not as brilliant as some of the big names, but he's strong and the 2680m will really suit him.'

Australia beats West Indies by eight wickets in second T20 International in Jamaica, to take 2-0 series lead

A brilliant attacking innings from Josh Inglis was the driving force for Australia beating West Indies in Jamaica to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20 International series. Inglis smashed 78 from 33 balls, and Green hit 56 from 32 as the tourists won the game by eight wickets. Earlier, West Indies great Andre Russell gave the crowd something to cheer for, blasting a quickfire 36 off 15 balls — including four sixes — in his final match for his country after announcing his international retirement. The West Indies scored 8-172 off their 20 overs, with Adam Zampa leading the bowling with 3-29. But Australia had no issue with the chase, getting the runs with 28 deliveries to spare. The third game of the series will be played in Saint Kitts and Nevis on Saturday (Australian time).

AFL 2025: Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell rules Finn Maginness out for the season

Hawthorn will complete its push for the premiership without Finn Maginness after coach Sam Mitchell ruled him out for the remainder of the season. Maginness sustained a lacerated kidney during his side's win over Port Adelaide in Launceston last weekend. Despite being rushed to hospital post game, it's unclear when and how the injury occurred. Maginness has remained in Tasmania alongside medical professionals, family and Hawthorn staff members. Mitchell said Maginness had improved but the club had parked a return date this season to prioritise his health. 'He came up after the game with a bit of soreness. Obviously, looking at it with hindsight it seems like easy decisions,' he said. 'Like, 'Oh, we'll just get him home to Melbourne and then we'll work it out'. 'I think our medical team have done a great job in making sure that firstly he stayed. We probably got a bit lucky that Scott and Anna were there, his parents. 'I rang him yesterday, she answered, he was having a bit of work done. Rob McCartney is down there, our head of football went down there for a few days. 'He's feeling supported but feeling pretty ordinary, so unfortunately it means his season is going to be over from an on-field sense. That's probably at the back of our minds at the moment.' Maginness' exit is softened by the return of star Will Day. Day has not played in four months since his sizzling start to the 2025 season. Mitchell remained unsure on the selection of forward Mabior Chol, who has battled a groin injury, after a short turnaround and travel between the Hawks' matches. 'If it was the last game of the season (Chol) could play, but he's going to be up against it after that,' he said. 'We're leaning towards not playing him and giving him another week. That's not 100 per cent confirmed but I suspect it will be another one.'

Brisbane Lions focused on Suns, not top spot, says veteran Dayne Zorko

Brisbane veteran Dayne Zorko has promised the Lions won't again fall into the trap of becoming preoccupied with how high they can finish on the AFL ladder despite being in contention to win the minor premiership. With five rounds of the regular season remaining, the second-placed Lions, on the back of four successive wins, are just two points adrift of competition leaders Collingwood, who have suffered back-to-back defeats. If the Lions beat Gold Coast at People First Stadium on Saturday, and the Magpies lose to struggling Richmond on Sunday, Brisbane would be on top by the end of the weekend. If both Brisbane and Collingwood win this weekend, top spot will be on the line on Saturday week when the teams meet at the MCG. However, should the Lions lose to the Suns, Adelaide will move ahead of them with a win over Port Adelaide on Saturday night. It's that scenario that Brisbane – who despite winning four premierships since the merger of the Bears and Fitzroy before the 1997 season have not won a minor premiership in that period – is most focused on avoiding, rather than being concerned about top spot. 'We found ourselves in a little bit of trouble earlier in the year when we started doing that,' Zorko told SENQ Breakfast. 'We looked where we were on the ladder and there was a fair bit of separation with us and Collingwood compared to the rest, and we felt as though our form started to fluctuate a little bit.' The Lions won just two of six matches in a sub-par May-June period, which resulted in them dropping out of the top two. 'We put all that stuff aside. We just purely focus on what's important from week to week now,' said Zorko ahead of Brisbane's bid for a fifth straight win on Saturday. 'We want to try to finish up as high as we possibly can, but more importantly we want our game to still be in really good check. 'We want to keep improving and adjusting our style to make sure, heading towards that finals period, our game's in the best possible shape we can get it.' Payney â¤ï¸â€🩹ðŸ¡ — Brisbane Lions (@brisbanelions) July 22, 2025 Zorko, who has been cleared to play on Saturday after a positive outcome from scan results on a sore foot, expected the Suns to 'respond significantly' to their 61-point weekend loss to Adelaide. 'Their game's still healthy, they're in really good check,' Zorko said of the eighth-placed Suns. 'You have those losses. Collingwood beat us by a monstrous number (52 points) earlier on in the season, and you come back, you respond and you clean things up. 'I'm expecting them to do the same thing, which we'll be ready for.'
