PODCAST: Stealth sticker will struggle to revive dated Nissan Navara
South African bakkie owners love stickers. Put a sticker on any existing bakkie and buyers line up whether it's Legend, Thunder, X-Rider or Athlete.
The Nissan Navara is the latest bakkie to go down that route with the re-introduced Stealth edition. The Stealth slots in between the standard Pro-4X and the LE on which it is based.
Nissan is offering the Rosslyn-built double cab-only Navara Stealth in a rear-wheel drive derivative for R695 200 and a R779 200 four-wheel drive derivative. These prices carry a R35 000 premium over the LE variants.

Nissan Navara Stealth makes a Pitstop
In this week's edition of The Citizen Motoring's Pitstop podcast, we discuss the arrival of the special edition model. We try to determine whether the Stealth label will give the dated bakkie the gravitas to lure buyers away from Mzansi's three top-selling bakkies, the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max.
Separating the Stealth from the LE on the outside are a restyled black grille and bumper with integrated nudge bar. There are also side-steps, a Stealth-badged sports bar and 17-inch black alloy wheels shod in Dunlop Grandtrek all-terrain tyres.
It also features black mirror caps and roof rails, black door handles and black Stealth badges at the base of the front doors and on the tailgate.

Same diesel power
The Nissan Navara Stealth is offered in three colours; white, Infinite Black and Techno Grey.
Inside the upgrades are more discreet and features extended leather trim on the doors and armrests.
There are no changes up front, where the 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine is carried over from the LE. The mill produces 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque and is mated seven-speed automatic gearbox.

A series of patent diagrams detailing the interior of the soon-to-be-released ninth-generation Toyota Hilux have been leaked online. Appearing on the Instagram account cars_secrets, the technical drawings reveal an updated cabin featuring a new dashboard and a large, freestanding touchscreen infotainment system – probably the same 12.3" unit used in the Land Cruiser Prado. Entry-level and workhorse Hilux models will no doubt make do with smaller screens. Below the display sit a pair of horizontal centre air vents and a panel for the HVAC controls. Whether these are physical (let's hope so) or capacitive (let's hope not) remains to be seen. Other standout interior details include a chunky new gear lever design with a small rectangular switchgear panel beside it, what appear to be cupholders placed in front of the side air vents and a second enclosed storage area above the cubby hole. The absence of a mechanical handbrake on the redesigned centre console suggests the fitment of an electronic parking brake. While the instrument cluster is lacking in detail, it's most likely that higher-spec Hilux models will feature a customisable digital display. However, to freshen things up, Toyota has bolted on a new front end that includes an aggressive new bumper design and a pair of slim headlight clusters. There's also updated wheel arch cladding and new wraparound taillamps. Riding on Toyota's longstanding IMV ladder-frame chassis (if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?), the new Hilux is expected to continue with the proven 2.4 l and 2.8 l four-cylinder turbodiesel engines – the latter available with 48V mild-hybrid technology. We assume the workhorse models will offer the aged but reliable 2.0 l and 2.7 l VVTi petrol engines. The new Toyota Hilux is expected to make its global debut in November 2025 in Thailand.

Nissan begins talks with union to cut jobs at European regional office
Nissan Motor has begun negotiations with the union representing staff at its European regional office about changes that will include job losses, according to a company document and internal emails. The struggling Japanese carmaker, which has embarked on a major restructuring, confirmed it has entered consultations with staff representatives at Nissan Automotive Europe, its regional office in Montigny-le-Bretonneux, France, which has about 560 staff. The office, which also oversees Nissan's operations for Africa, the Middle East, India and Oceania, is set to undergo major changes, according to a person with knowledge of the issue who declined to be identified. Management and the union agreed to discuss voluntary redundancies before any forced layoffs, the document seen by Reuters showed. Talks are expected to conclude by October 20, with full details to be shared with staff in November, the document and the emails said. 'We are working diligently and respectfully with all parties to ensure that this process is conducted with care, transparency and in full compliance with legal requirements,' Massimiliano Messina, Nissan's vice-chairperson for the region, said in a July 31 email. Messina also said in the email that no decisions had yet been made. After taking the helm in April, CEO Ivan Espinosa announced a sweeping restructuring that includes cutting about 15% of Nissan's workforce, slashing global production capacity by nearly 30% to 2.5-million vehicles and the number of its manufacturing sites to 10 from 17. The carmaker, which has seen weak sales in China and the US compound pain brought on from an expansionist strategy, hopes to save ¥500bn (R61bn) with the restructuring. In recent developments, Nissan said last week it would stop output at its Civac plant in Mexico by March next year. It also said it will end car production at its Oppama plant in Japan by March 2028 and at Nissan-Shatai's Shonan factory by March 2027. The carmaker employs nearly 19,000 people across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, India and Oceania, with close to 60% based in Europe, according to a diversity report published in October 2024.

Newly leaked sketch gives hint of ‘next' Toyota Hilux's interior
Set to retain the AN110 internal moniker, the Hilux will debut next year, not as a brand new generation. Its highly awaited world launch getting ever closer, a sketch drawing, supposedly that of the interior of the 'new generation' Toyota Hilux, has been unearthed in Thailand. Last spotted undergoing testing in June, the tentatively called Hilux Travo won't be an all-new model, but rather the most extensive update to the current eighth generation Hilux since its initial word reveal in 2016. Known so far Systematically rendered since the emergence of first spy shots at the beginning of the year, exterior differences spotted so far comprise new headlight clusters, a restyled grille, new front and rear bumpers, and Volkswagen Amarok-style vertical taillights clusters. Underneath Underneath, the Hilux will continue to ride on the IMV platform rather than switching to the newer TNGA-F that underpins the Prado, Land Cruiser 300, Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, Lexus GX and LX, but possibly with a number of tweaks. The same applies to the choice of engines, which will seemingly once again consist of the current 2.4 and 2.8 GD-6 turbodiesel engines, the latter with or without the 48-volt mild hybrid system. Unconfirmed is the possible inclusion of the Prado's eight-speed automatic gearbox in place of the current six, plus an overhauled series of safety and driver's assistance. More to follow… Initially tipped for unveiling in 2023 and then 2025, the Hilux is expected to formally debut early next year, with sales to start soon after. '[Hilux] is extremely important to us as a business and a company. It is the most important vehicle we manufacture and sell… it is our core model,' Toyota South Africa Motors President and CEO, Andrew Kirby, told The Citizen at the launch of the Prado in Mozambique last year. '[The next generation] will have exciting features and upgrades, I think our customers will enjoy'.
