Cornwall beat Newcastle Thunder for first win of 2025
The win moves the Choughs up to seventh in the table and ends a three-game losing run in all competitions since the start of the season.
Thunder took an early lead before Henry Symons levelled in the 14th minute.
He got his second try eight minutes later but Sam Whinney and Nathan Conroy crossed to give the hosts a 20-6 lead at the break.
Bradley Llewellyn and Kye Jacobsen added further tries in the opening 15 minutes of the second half as Cornwall led 32-6.
Newcastle scored three late tries to make the scoreline respectable but could not haul in the hosts.
"No disrespect to Newcastle, it's one that we're supposed to win and that can bring its challenges for a young team," head coach Mike Abbott told BBC Radio Cornwall.
"But I thought we went about it really well, I thought our first half was really, really good, the way we built pressure
"We were really professional the way we went about it and I'm really pleased with that.
"The chat in the week was that the game might not go our way, we might do all these things we've said we'd do but then they could score first or it could be 0-0 after 20-odd minutes.
"But after they scored I just hoped that we could go back to what we spoke about and what we would do if this did happen and we did.
"I thought we just kicked on again, kicked them into a corner, our defence ramped up and we just built pressure on them, forced errors and then off the back of that we scored and put some quick tries together which was really, really good."

SAINTS under-21s will start their Premier League 2 campaign with a trip to Newcastle United on Sunday, August 17. Saints reached the PL2 play-off final last season, losing 2-0 to Manchester City, and start the season with an away game for the third straight season. David Ornstein: Manchester United submit £73m opening offer for Benjamin Sesko on Tuesday afternoon
Manchester United have submitted their opening offer for first-choice centre-forward target Benjamin Sesko this afternoon. It comes after Newcastle United, the only other club in the race, made a bid worth £69.5 million on Monday following 'positive talks' with both RB Leipzig and the player. However, German outlet BILD claims the Red Devils have now entered with a proposal of £73.8m in hopes of prising Sesko from the Bundesliga outfit in the coming days. David Ornstein has also further verified such reports via The Athletic. Benjamin Sesko: The state of play (Photo by) Speculation has suggested that Sesko is favouring a move to Old Trafford over St. James' Park even if it means playing no European football throughout 2025/2026. He had already had his sights set on a Premier League switch since the start of the summer when he was locked in negotiations with Arsenal – until Leipzig's costly demands priced the Gunners out of a deal and they pursued Viktor Gyokeres instead. After missing out on the likes of Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo and Hugo Ekitike – as well as being informed by talisman Alexander Isak that he wants to explore a new venture – Newcastle made it clear to Leipzig they would pay whatever it takes to seal a deal for Sesko, but an agreement can only come to fruition if the Slovenian is fully on board with the prospective transfer himself. How Sesko has fared in recent years The 22-year-old has notched 39 goals and eight assists in 87 appearances for Leipzig over the last two seasons, whilst he also recorded 29 goals and 11 assists in 79 games for sister club RB Salzburg throughout his four-year tenure – albeit two campaigns were on loan with FC Liefering. Man United makes bid for Benjamin Sesko and puts Alexander Isak to Liverpool in doubt
Manchester United has made its move for Benjamin Sesko. After Newcastle had made the first bid, the Red Devils have responded with their own proposal, in a move which could have ramifications for Arne Slot's transfer plans at Anfield. Per The Athletic, Man United has bid $86.5 million + $11.5 million in add-ons for the 22-year-old striker. That reflects its internal valuation of the forward. RB Leipzig is yet to respond. Newcastle had earlier made a second Sesko offer of its own, worth slightly more both overall and in guaranteed funds, as it assessess potential Alexander Isak replacements amid interest from Liverpool. But after a brutal summer of missing out on targets, this threatens to be another setback for the Magpies. Man United believes that Sesko favors a move to Old Trafford over St James' Park. That could significantly weaken Newcastle's position as the pair go head to head. And this time, Liverpool stands to miss out as a result of Newcastle's struggles. Failure to land Sesko, with the clock ticking down until the start of the season, would make it even more complicated to sanction a departure for Isak. Nothing is decided yet, with Man United's proposal notably valued slightly below Newcastle's latest bid. It is more in line with the Magpies' first proposal, which was ultimately knocked back by RB Leipzig. Newcastle's first offer included $86.5 million up front, the same amount now being offered by Man United. However, Ruben Amorim's side has doubled the potential add-ons on offer from $5.75 million to $11.5 million. The total package on offer from Man United is therefore $98 million. Newcastle's most recent proposal is worth more like $104 million. But signs are ominous on Tyneside, where fans will fear a familiar story is playing out. It already lost out on Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool earlier in the window, while Man United won the race for both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Liverpool's capture of Ekitike means that its front line looks in reasonably good shape. It has already broken its transfer record once this summer to bring in Florian Wirtz. Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah signed a new two-year deal toward the end of last season, and Cody Gakpo bagged a brace in the latest friendly outing. Rio Ngumoha has also showed incredible promise in preseason. It is therefore considered unlikely that Liverpool will seek an alternative if a move for Isak does not materialize. The Swede is an exceptional market opportunity, which is why the Reds are pursuing him. Elsewhere, Liverpool is interested in a new center-back. It may yet go head to head with Newcastle for Marc Guehi.
