Super slimmer set to wed after shedding half his body weight to save his life
A Scots super slimmer is to tie the knot after shedding half his body weight following a life-or-death wake up call from his doctor.
Andy Duff, 58, who weighed 28 stone 8lbs, was warned that if he didn't lose weight he risked dying within a year.
Faced with that stark choice, Andy joined his local Slimming World group in St Mary's Clubrooms in Lanark and never looked back.
Today, 14 stone lighter, his life has been completely transformed after losing a remarkable 50 per cent of his body weight.
And now, after 38 years together, Andy can't wait to marrying his best friend and partner, Isobel at the Hamilton Town House on October 29.
She lost six stone as a member of the same slimming group, and the happy couple have cheered each other on every step of the way.
Andy says he is now looking forward to a beautiful wedding photo, dressed in a suit that tells the story of his incredible journey.
Shedding 14 stone has done more than transform Andy's appearance - it's given him his health back.
His diabetes diagnosis has been reversed, his blood pressure and cholesterol are now within normal ranges and he can walk without pain, drive comfortably, and shop for clothes that fit him perfectly.
Andy beams with confidence, no longer dreading photos or public outings. Everyday tasks feel like triumphs, and he embraces each one.
When Andy first walked through the door of his local Slimming World group, he felt scared and embarrassed. He expected judgement because of his size.
Instead, he found a warm, non-judgmental community that rallied around him.
'Walking through the door I felt scared, embarrassed and thought I would have been judged by my size,' he said. "But found the group to be supportive and full of new friends.'
One of Andy's favourite surprises has been the variety of delicious, healthy meals he can enjoy while still losing weight.
He's found joy in sharing recipes, swapping meal ideas and celebrating every milestone with fellow members. The camaraderie that comes with his weekly sessions has turned healthy eating from a chore into a celebration.
In honour of reaching 50 per cent body-weight loss, Andy received an exclusive award from the directors of Slimming World.
And his consultant, Lian McCulloch, couldn't be prouder, saying: "This recognition highlights not only Andy's dedication but also the incredible power of our supportive community.
"Andy's transformation is proof that with determination, support, and the right tools, lasting change is within everyone's reach. Here's to Andy's continued success - and to every member daring to take that first step through our doors."
Lanark Groups are held every Tuesday at 9.30am, 11am, 5.30pm or 7pm and Saturdays at 7am or 8.30am in St Marys Clubrooms. Contact Lian on 0774 8845684 for more information.

Number of Scots patients waiting more than eight hours for emergency NHS care rises
The figures have been described as "nothing short of disgraceful'. The number of Scots waiting longer than eight hours for care in an NHS emergency department has risen. And 4.1% of patients who attended emergency departments waited more than 12 hours – up from 3.7% the week before. The SNP Government has been accused of watching as 'patients are dying needlessly'. The latest A&E figures cover the week ending August 10th. NHS Scotland has a target for 95% of patients to be admitted, transferred or discharged within four hours of arrival at an A&E department. According to the new figures, 11% of patients waited more than eight hours, up from 10% the week before. Overall, 64.9% of patients were seen within four hours, down from 66.9% the previous week. Tory MSP Sandesh Gulhane said the figures were 'nothing short of disgraceful'. He said: 'Even in summer, thousands of patients are being left waiting over four hours in A&E. The blame for these appalling waiting times lies squarely with the SNP Government. Their inaction and incompetence mean patients are dying needlessly in A&E on their watch. 'Hardworking staff are working tirelessly for their patients, but they're not miracle workers. SNP ministers should be bending over backwards to support them, not making their jobs harder with their dire workforce planning and Humza Yousaf's flimsy recovery plan. 'How many more families need to lose loved ones before John Swinney and Neil Gray finally come up with a plan to address this crisis? If they don't act now, our NHS faces disaster when winter hits. Health Secretary Neil Gray said: 'Our core A&E departments have consistently outperformed those in England and Wales over the past decade. Our A&E departments are facing sustained pressure; this situation is not unique to Scotland. I know that some people are still waiting too long for treatment, and I am determined to drive improvement. 'We are investing £200 million to reduce waiting times, improve hospital flow, and minimise delayed discharges. Building on success already seen last year, we expect the additional funding committed to result in more than 300,000 appointments and procedures this year. 'To help ease the pressure on teams, we will provide direct access to specialist Frailty teams in every Emergency Department and expand Hospital at Home capacity to at least 2,000 beds by the end of 2026. "These are just a few of the initiatives we are implementing to shift the focus of care from acute settings to community-based services.'

Scots households warned to ‘keep windows firmly shut' this week – here's why
Plus, five tips on how you can keep flying ants out of your home PESKY CRITTERS Scots households warned to 'keep windows firmly shut' this week – here's why Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SCOTS are being warned to close windows as we face "flying ant week" - when swarms of airborne insects invade our homes. Dr Nathaniel Green, an insect behavioural specialist, told folk to prepare for the annual onslaught. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Flying Ant Day is when flying ants swarm for mating Credit: Getty 2 It typically occurs in mid-to-late July and early August Credit: Getty It comes as weather conditions are "lining up perfectly" for the winged beasties. He said: "Warm temperatures, high humidity and still air create the ideal launchpad for millions of winged queens and males to take flight. "When the weather hits that sweet spot, it's like a signal for ants everywhere to take to the air at once." Dr Green added: "Afternoons will be the main time to watch out or keep your windows firmly shut." His comments came in response to a new report by wallpaper, name label and sticker firm The new report warned filthy windows were "a magnet" for the aerial critters. It said: "Flying ants aren't dangerous, but they're not exactly welcome guests when they drift inside, and dirty windows could be inviting them in." Dr Green added: "Smears and dust on glass can reflect light in a way that draws insects closer. "Add in pollen or organic residue, and you've basically got an insect buffet. "Cleaning your windows before the swarms hit will make your home far less attractive to them." From worm bread to mealworm kebabs... could eating bugs and insects in everyday food be the future? The expert said flying ant week was just that, and only lasted "a few days". He added: "Males die soon after mating and fertilised queens land to start new colonies. "However, those few days can be enough to leave your kitchen or lounge buzzing with unwanted visitors." The report added: "The advice is simple - give your windows a proper clean, keep them closed during peak swarm hours and brace for a few days in mid-August when the UK could be under insect invasion. "With a bit of preparation, you can enjoy the summer warmth without sharing it with hundreds of winged intruders."
