Costco ax 'GOAT' food court item sparking fury from shoppers

Daily Mail19-06-2025
Costco fans are still mourning the loss of the beloved cinnamon sugar churros a year after they vanished quietly.
The churros were a $1 fan-favorite treat pulled at the start of the pandemic.
Fans rejoiced when they were brought back in 2021 at $1.49 — only to be axed again in 2024.
Shoppers are still fuming over the removal of the 'GOAT' item — especially after Costco replaced the crunchy classic with a dense, 8,000-calorie chocolate chunk cookie for $2.50.
'Those cookies are awful and crazy high-end calories. The churro was amazing. I will die on this hill,' a Reddit user wrote in a post.
'The cookies replacing churros is the worst thing that costco has done since changing the berry smoothie recipe,' another shopper commented.
The churro controversy is just the latest in a string of food court shake-ups that have enraged longtime members, including Costco's controversial Pepsi for Coca-Cola swap.
Fans are still bitter over the death of the combo pizza. Others are baffled why Asian Costco food courts offer sushi, bulgogi bakes, and clam chowder—while U.S. locations struggle to hold onto basics.
'Costco has been disappointing me so much lately. Churro gone replaced by 8,000 calories cookie. Combo pizza gone while Asia Costcos get sushi and clam chowder and bulgogi bake,' a Reddit user wrote.
American shoppers were also jealous at the debut of a California Crab Roll only in Canada.
Social media users were thrilled to learn about the return of its hot turkey and provolone sandwich, until they heard about the price hike to $6.99 from $3.99.
Besides food, Costco decided to introduce a new Frozen Strawberry Lemonade at select US locations.
The $2.99 beverage was spotted at food courts in California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, and Michigan.
The drink was described as an 'overpoweringly sweet' beverage by social media users who were disappointed it replaced Costco's Strawberry Banana Smoothie.
The one thing that will likely never go away is Costco's famous $1.50 hot dog and soda combo, which were not including in customers' food court price hike claims.
When Costco isn't busy with its food court shakeups, its competing with rivals like Walmart and Sam's Club.
Several Reddit users trashed the Double Chocolate Chunk Cookie that replaced the Churros last year
One of Costco's latest projects is a standalone gas station in California to be opened in the spring of 2026.
The gas station news comes months after Walmart announced its plans to open 40 to 45 fuel station convenience stores.
Costco has opted not to axe all self-checkout machines, unlike Sam's Club, which is currently rolling out AI-powered 'Scan & Go' technology.
However, it has been aggressively working on a membership crackdown and implemented controversial rules before hiking its membership fees.
While the chain recently lost its top wholesale store title and were affected by tariffs, it's continued to maintain financial success.

Wall Street slips as Jackson Hole event looms, Walmart stumbles

Aug 21 (Reuters) - Wall Street's main indexes slipped on Thursday, as cautious investors awaited clues on monetary policy from a Federal Reserve conference in Jackson Hole, while big-box retailer Walmart's quarterly results did little to boost sentiment. Walmart (WMT.N), opens new tab raised its fiscal year sales and profit, driven by strong demand from shoppers across all income levels, but missed quarterly profit expectations and flagged higher costs from tariffs. Shares of the retailer fell 3.4% and pressured the consumer staples sector (.SPLRCS), opens new tab, which declined 0.9%. The spotlight was on reports from retailers, including Target (TGT.N), opens new tab and Home Depot (HD.N), opens new tab, this week as investors tried to gauge the impact of U.S. tariffs on consumer spending. "There's a bit of a mixed picture within the consumer space and there's uncertainty in the economy - whether that's the job market or whether that's prices (increasing) from a tariff pass through," said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer at Northlight Asset Management. A labor market report on Thursday showed signs of a slowdown, while a private report indicated business activity picked up pace in August, reflecting a complex environment for the central bank that has to deliver its verdict on rate cuts next month. All eyes are now on the Fed's annual symposium, where Chair Jerome Powell is scheduled to speak on Friday at 10 a.m. ET. Traders will closely monitor Powell's speech for any clues on interest rate cuts in September following recent job market weakness. "Investors are looking for assurance from Powell that a rate cut is likely at the September meeting, in order to help prevent any further weakening of the labor market," said Rick Gardner, chief investment officer at RGA Investments. Multiple policymakers, including Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Atlanta President Raphael Bostic and Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey Schmid, have struck a cautious tone and acknowledged the need to stay data dependent. Traders have pared down their expectations for a 25-basis-point interest rate cut in September to 79% from 99.9% last week, according to data compiled by LSEG. At 11:50 a.m. ET the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI), opens new tab fell 74.70 points, or 0.17%, to 44,863.61, the S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab lost 12.73 points, or 0.20%, to 6,383.05 and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC), opens new tab lost 42.87 points, or 0.20%, to 21,129.99. A selloff in technology stocks earlier this week appeared to subside, with technology-related stocks such as Meta (META.O), opens new tab, (AMZN.O), opens new tab and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O), opens new tab marginally lower. The selloff signaled investor fears that the equities, which have soared since April lows, are now overvalued, while Washington's growing interference in the sector has also raised alarms. Among other market movers, Coty (COTY.N), opens new tab slumped 20% after the beauty products maker forecast a drop in current-quarter sales on weak U.S. spending. In trade developments, the U.S. and the European Union on Thursday finalized a framework deal they reached last month. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.42-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 1.11-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. The S&P 500 posted six new 52-week highs and no new lows, while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 45 new highs and 86 new lows.

Oil edges up on stalled Russia-Ukraine peace talks, strong US demand

NEW YORK/LONDON, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Oil prices edged up on Thursday as Russia and Ukraine blamed each other for a stalled peace process, and as earlier U.S. data showed signs of strong demand in the top oil consuming nation. Brent crude futures were up 56 cents, or about 0.8%, at $67.40 a barrel at 12:08 p.m. EDT (1608 GMT), having hit a two-week high earlier in the session. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up 53 cents, or 0.9%, at $63.24 a barrel. Both contracts climbed over 1% in the prior session. The path to peace in Ukraine remained uncertain, turning oil traders cautious after a selloff over the past two weeks on hopes that U.S. President Donald Trump would soon negotiate a diplomatic end to Russia's war with its neighbor. Both Moscow and Kyiv have since blamed each other for stalling the peace process. Russia on Thursday launched a major air attack near Ukraine's border with the European Union, while Ukraine claimed to have hit a Russian oil refinery. "Some geopolitical risk premium is slowly being pumped back into the market," oil trading advisory firm Ritterbusch and Associates told clients on Thursday. The uncertainty in the peace talks means that the possibility of tighter sanctions on Russia has resurfaced, said Tamas Varga, an analyst at PVM Oil Associates. Oil prices were also supported by a larger-than-expected drawdown from U.S. crude stockpiles in the last week, indicating strong demand. U.S. crude stockpiles fell 6 million barrels in the week ended August 15, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported on Wednesday, while analysts had expected a draw of 1.8 million barrels. Investors were also looking to the Jackson Hole economic conference in Wyoming for signals on a possible Fed interest rate cut next month. The annual gathering of central bankers begins on Thursday, with Fed Chair Jerome Powell scheduled to speak on Friday.
