Ghibli Spring/Summer T-shirt Collection turns short-sleeve weather into Ghibli weather【Photos】
A dozen different designs for lovers of Studio Ghibli anime, including some subtle salutes for true fans.
After a decidedly chilly cherry blossom season, the weather is finally starting to warm up in Japan. That means it's time to start putting away sweaters and coats and switch over to the fun, breezy fashions of late spring and summer, and if you want those fashions to be anime masterpiece-inspired too, there's a whole line of Ghibli T-shirts going on sale.
GBL is billed as the 'American casual' line of Studio Ghibli apparel. It's more accurate to describe it as classy, high-quality clothing with a dash of classic Americana aesthetics added to Ghibli's artwork, resulting in things like this T-shirt with My Neighbor Totoro's Catbus energetically meowing across the back with a rustic weathered look.
Likewise, the 'Good morning' shirt might look like it's from a Michigan summer camp or Route 66 diner, but it's actually recreating the scene from Castle in the Sky/Laputa when Pazu plays his trumpet at the start of the day.
Mysterious Creature may look a little spooky…until, that is, you realize that the shadowy mass in the center is actually the Big Totoro taking a nap.
If you're looking for a proverbial deep cut in your crewneck, there's this design that only true fans will recognize as the non-Catbus bus from My Neighbor Totoro.
▼ There's an especially cool touch on the sleeve, where you'll find the sign from the bus stop where Mei and Satsuki encounter Totoro in the rain.
Spirited Away fans have two designs to choose from, one with No Face on the front and frog spirit Aogaeru on the back at the nape of the neck.
The other Spirited Away shirt is a rare chance for Lin to get a turn in the spotlight, showing the hard-working big-sister type in the midst of a tempura rice bowl delivery.
Things take a dark turn with the Princess Mononoke tatari tee, which not only shows the effect of the tatari curse on the infected forest creature…
…but also shows that the corruption is infecting you, with ominous tendrils on the sleeve.
▼ Of course, this won't seem so detrimental to you if you're already wearing that tatari ring.
Pivoting back to a more positive tone, the Howl's Moving Castle shirt makes a heartfelt, starlit plea.
Moving from one magic-steeped Ghibli film to another, Kiki's Delivery Service also has two shirts, one with 'Black Cat' writ large across the back with a rather stylized rendering of Jiji…
…which might be part of the reason why there's an explanation on the front.
While Jiji may be Kiki's best friend, she makes other pals too during the course of her anime, including budding artist Ursula. As a matter of fact, Ursula helps bolster Kiki's spirits after the young witch loses her powers, showing her that flying brooms aren't the only way to get around.
Finally, rounding out the GBL Spring/Summer T-shirt Collection are two for Porco Rosso, one with Italian aviation mechanics wunderkind Fio…
…and the other with sky pirate leader Capo.
Fittingly, the Capo T-shirt is the only one with a pocket, so that he can claim whatever you place inside for himself.
▼ Stealing glasses that are of no use to anyone other than the rightful owner whose prescription the lenses match? Now that's a real pirate!
▼ The shirts all feature a tag with 'Studio Ghibli' written in Japanese, plus a little Soot Sprite, on the back at the left side of the hem.
All of the shirts are made of 100-percent cotton and are priced at 6,930 yen (US$48). The entire lineup can be ordered as of April 26 through the online store of Studio Ghibli specialty shop Donguri Kyowakoku here.

Studio Ghibli wind chime adds anime charm to the summer breeze
The sounds of a Japanese summer, with the help of magical movie characters. Studio Ghibli's 1988 film My Neighbour Totoro is famous for its titular star, but the giant grey Totoro, known as the 'Big' Totoro in Japan, is only one of three that you'll see in the film. The other two are blue and white, known as 'Medium' and 'Small' respectively, and they're now here to step into the spotlight with the big fella, in a beautiful wind chime. Each Totoro has a cute little companion keeping it company, with the white one on top joined by a red ladybug, the blue in the middle joined by a yellow butterfly, and the grey star Totoro appearing with a Soot Sprite by its side. Wind chimes like this one are commonly used in summer, where the tinkling sound acts as an auditory reminder of the breeze. While they come in many shapes and forms, one common element is the oblong paper tag at the bottom, which helps to catch the wind and cause the chimes to ring. This tag is beautifully adorned with Totoro and a Soot Sprite, alongside fireworks, another symbol of summer in Japan, and the word 'furin' ('風鈴' ['wind chime']), which combines the kanji for 'wind' ('風') and 'bell' ('鈴'). The wind chime is made from pottery to give it a beautiful sound, and it measures 7.5 centimetres (3 inches) in length. The refreshing turquoise hues will help keep you cool in the summer heat, and the box it comes in is so gorgeous you'll want to keep it for storage come autumn. Each wind chime is priced at 3,080 yen (US$21.41) and can be purchased at Donguri Kyowakoku stores and online, thanks to a recent restock. Like many Ghibli items, though, this seasonal item looks set to be very popular with fans so you'll want to get in quick while it's still available. New Studio Ghibli Uniqlo T-shirt line coming to the U.S., Japan left out once again【Photos】
Eight Ghibli anime movies inspire new collection of tees and sweatshirts. Uniqlo has announced some pretty big-name collaborations with the anime/manga world this summer, including new partnerships with Pokémon and Ai Yazawa. But the casual clothing chain isn't done adding anime flare to fans' wardrobes yet, as they've now announced a brand-new line of Studio Ghibli apparel. However, as has become oddly the norm for Uniqlo Ghibli collections, once again these items won't be offered in Japan. Instead, they appear to be exclusive (at least for now) to Uniqlo U.S.A. As with the previous Uniqlo Ghibli items, these designs were created by Thai artist Kanyada Phatan, who contributes photography and poetry to Neppu, a monthly magazine published by Studio Ghibli. The new collection consists of both short-sleeved T-shirts and long-sleeved sweatshirts, featuring characters from eight Ghibli anime films, including, of course, My Neighbor Totoro, with the Catbus hanging out near the nape of your neck on this shirt. While some of the designs take their illustrations directly from their source anime, others are original creations, like on the Totoro sweatshirt, which has some Soot Sprites congregating near the left cuff. The Howl's Moving Castle design uses pretty much the entire front of the shirt as a canvas for the titular mobile architecture… …and there's no missing No Face, blazingly emblazoned in triplicate across the front of the Spirited Away sweatshirt, which also bears the film's Japanese title, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi. ▼ This time there's a Radish Spirit hanging out on the sleeve. Some of the designs are double-sided, with graphics on both the front and back, like with the Princess Mononoke sweatshirt. Set in a forest green field on the front is monster princess San, accompanied with raised text of the film's promotional poster tagline in Japan, 'Ikiro' ('Live' or 'Survive'). San appears on the back as well, underneath Ashitaka, with the movie's Japanese-text title, Mononoke-hime, overlapping them. There's more princess-related attire with the The Tale of the Princess Kaguya T-shirt… …and another Ghibli anime that doesn't get a lot of merchandising attention, Pom Poko, is here too. Along with the movie's Japanese title and the kanji character for tanuki (狸), the text on the back identifies the wearer as a member of the human-observing tanuki research team, while the front graphic is, as far as our analysis can tell, the first-ever depiction of testicles on a Uniqlo T-shirt. ▼ Though these are culturally relevant testicles. A less ballsy option is this Kiki's Delivery Service sweatshirt, which is both dual-sided and bilingual. Rounding out the single-movie designs, The Boy and the Heron gets two pieces, a T-shirt with the Gray Heron unnervingly saying 'My Dear' on the front while the back reminds you of who made the movie as the scene-stealing Warawara remind you of just how adorable the little marshmallow-like creatures are. The sweatshirt flips their positions around, with the Warawara on the front and the Gray Heron on the back. And finally, rounding out the adult-sized collection is an overarching Studio Ghibli T-shirt, with illustrations of Porco Rosso's protagonist, Nausicaa, Ponyo, Castle in the Sky's Dola, and The Wind Rise's Ka-14 aircraft, which would eventually evolve into the Imperial Japanese Navy's World War II Zero fighter plane. The T-shirts are all priced at US$24.90, and the sweatshirts at US$39.90. The entire collection will be available on July 10 at Uniqlo stores in the U.S. and through the chain's U.S. online shop here. Source: Uniqlo via Yahoo! Austrian daily under fire after Clint Eastwood slams 'phony' interview
An Austrian newspaper came under fire Tuesday after Hollywood star Clint Eastwood said an alleged interview with him published by the paper to mark his 95th birthday was "entirely phony". The row was sparked by a purported interview with the Oscar-winning actor and director carried by the German-language Kurier newspaper Friday. In the interview, which was picked up widely by American media over the weekend, Eastwood criticizes a lack of fresh ideas in the current film industry as "we live in an era of remakes and franchises". "I long for the good old days when screenwriters wrote films like 'Casablanca' in small bungalows on the studio lot. When everyone had a new idea," he was quoted as saying. "My philosophy is, do something new or stay at home," it adds. In a statement to Deadline magazine published Monday, Eastwood said "I thought I would set the record straight". "I can confirm I've turned 95. I can also confirm that I never gave an interview to an Austrian publication called Kurier, or any other writer in recent weeks, and that the interview is entirely phony," he added. On Tuesday evening, the editorial team of the Vienna-based Kurier said its freelancer Elisabeth Sereda had compiled the interview by citing from "a total of 18" round table conversations with Eastwood. But since the article was published as an interview and not as a profile, the daily said it would cut ties with the author. "Even though no quotes have been fabricated, the interviews are documented and the allegations of falsification can be refuted, we will not be working with the author in the future because transparency and our strict editorial standards are paramount to us," Kurier said in a statement published on its website. The newspaper had recently published interviews by Sereda with celebrities such as Jude Law and Elton John. © 2025 AFP
