Key EBC face set to take over as new Bihar RJD chief: Who is Mangani Lal Mandal?
Veteran socialist leader and ex-MP, Mangani Lal Mandal, who belongs to the Extremely Backward Class (EBC), is set to become the new president of the RJD's Bihar unit.
Mandal, 76, who returned to the Lalu Prasad-led RJD from the ruling JD(U) headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar this January, emerged as the RJD leadership's 'natural choice' for its Bihar unit chief with the party going all out to woo the politically-crucial EBCs in the run-up to the state Assembly polls slated for October-November this year.
Mandal will succeed the outgoing state RJD chief Jagdanand Singh, a Thakur leader and close Lalu aide, who expressed his unwillingness to continue in his position, party sources said.
The RJD has been conducting its organisation elections from the block to district levels in Bihar for the last four months. Its block and district presidents had been elected, reflecting a 'balanced social combination' with 'due representation' given to leaders from various groups including the EBCs and Scheduled Castes (SCs), sources said.
For the state party president's post, whose election would take place on July 19, Mandal is the only candidate to have filed nomination. He is thus set to get elected to the post unopposed.
The state RJD chief's election would be followed by the formation of the party's state committee leading to the expected re-election of Lalu as its national president by July-end.
The RJD leadership's bid to pick Mandal, the former JD (U) national vice- president, as its new state chief months ahead of the Assembly polls assumes significance as he belongs to the EBC Dhanuk community, which accounts for over two per cent votes in Bihar. Dhanuks have been amomg top five most populous EBC groups, with the community concentrated in Madhubani, Supaul, Patna and Nalanda besides having a sizeable population in over a dozen other districts across the state.
Mandal had started his political innings under the leadership of socialist icon and former Bihar CM Karpoori Thakur. He was once considered among the state's leading socialist faces that include Lalu and Nitish. However, while Lalu and Nitish grew in stature in due course, Mandal remained confined to the EBC-centric, region-specific (Kosi and Mithilanchal) politics.
Mandal was first nominated to the Bihar Legislative Council in 1986 as a Lok Dal nominee when Karpoori Thakur had been the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly. He had been the MLC for three consecutive terms till 2004. He had once also served as a minister in the RJD-led government.
After he switched to the JD(U), the latter had in 2004 sent Mandal to the Rajya Sabha. He contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from the Jhanjharpur constituency on the JD(U)'s ticket successfully. In subsequent years, he kept switching sides.
He rejoined the JD (U) before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Although he did not get the Lok Sabha poll ticket then, he was appointed as the national party vice-president. Mandal was only the second person in the JD(U) to have got this position after Prashant Kishor, who is now the Jan Suraaj Party supremo.
A senior RJD leader said: 'Mangani Lal Mandal has been the most credible EBC face. His election as new RJD chief will surely send across strong message among EBCs about RJD's efforts to practise A to Z (inclusive) politics, more so at a time when all parties have been vying with each other for votes of the EBCs, which make up about 36.1 per cent of the state's population.'
On his part, Mandal told reporters: 'It (Bihar RJD chief's post) would be a matter of great honour for me. It is a challenge and responsibility in the election year. I am thankful to the party's national president Lalu Prasad and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav for it.'

Forward Bloc to intensify movement against ‘land grabbing' in Howrah
The farmers' front of the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) on Saturday said that they will sharpen their movement against alleged land grabbing in Howrah's Panchla block. Farid Mollah, a farmer leader of AIFB, said the issue would be one of the key points of discussion during the two-day state conference (June 14-15) of the party's farmers' wing, that was held in Cooch Behar. 'We have repeatedly urged the Howrah District Magistrate to take action against land grabbers, but no steps have been taken by the administration,' he said. In a letter to the District Magistrate, the local Forward Bloc leaders have alleged that a group of land mafias, with some 'administrative backing', are active in the Panchla area. 'These people are filling fertile agricultural land with fly ash to convert it into highland, making it unfit for cultivating paddy and other essential crops,' the letter claimed. The party, in its letter, alleged that there is a nexus between land grabbers, anti-social elements, and sections of the block administration, allegedly backed by the ruling party. The letter urged the administration to 'excavate a branch canal from Sahpara to Dighirpar and Mallik Bagan to restore irrigation facilities' and allow farmers to resume cultivation. 'We urge you to take strict action against the land grabbers and those complicit within the administration to prevent illegal activities in the area,' it read. Mollah said the trend of agricultural land being encroached upon for real estate and fisheries business is not limited to Howrah. 'This is the situation across Bengal. Agricultural land is vanishing, the government is turning a blind eye. We'll intensify our movement against this,' he said. He criticised the Centre's agricultural policies, pointing out the absence of a separate agricultural budget. 'Central government is anti-farmers. They're cutting funds for schemes like MGNREGA. TMC warns Anubrata Mondal, Kajal Sheikh against ‘infighting' ahead of 2026 Assembly elections
The Top leaders of the Trinamool Congress, including party state president Subrata Bakshi, met Anubrata Mondal and his party rival Kajal Sheikh on Saturday ahead of the July 21 Martyrs' Day preparation meeting. The meeting, which took place at the party's Bhabanipur office, was also attended by Kolkata Mayor and state minister Firhad Hakim and state Sports Minister Aroop Biswas. According to party sources, both Mondal and Sheikh were told that no 'infighting' would be tolerated ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. They were instructed to refrain from making public statements against each other. If repeated, the party warned, strict disciplinary action would follow. Mondal, in particular, was advised to maintain composure and avoid provocative behavior, the sources said. The closed-door meeting came weeks after a purported audio clip surfaced in which Mondal was allegedly heard using abusive language during a phone call with a police inspector. The Birbhum district police have since registered an FIR against Mondal. After the meeting, neither Mondal nor Sheikh made any public comments. ‘Insult to Dalits': NDA turns heat on Lalu over Ambedkar video, RJD hits back
A video from Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad's 78th birthday event on Wednesday has set off a political storm in Bihar. In the video circulating on social media, an RJD worker can be seen gifting Lalu a portrait of B R Ambedkar and holding it close to his feet. The RJD chief continued to pose for photographs, while the portrait remained at this position. The incident has drawn sharp criticism from the RJD's rival parties, particularly the ruling BJP and its NDA allies, who have accused Lalu of allegedly 'insulting the architect of the Indian Constitution' and 'hurting Dalit sentiments'. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Samrat Choudhary called the incident 'an unpardonable insult to Dr Ambedkar and the Dalit community,' adding that it marked 'a black chapter in Bihar's political history'. He also demanded a public apology from the RJD patriarch. 'It is extremely unfortunate that on Lalu ji's birthday, such an insult to Baba Ambedkar took place. There can be no greater shame for democracy. This incident is a clear symbol of a dark chapter for the RJD… It reflects the mindset of those who have always used Dalit votes but have little regard for their icons,' Choudhary said. Lalu had 'consistently humiliated the backward, most backward, and Dalit communities in Bihar,' he alleged. Union Minister and former Bihar CM Jitan Ram Manjhi also condemned the incident, accusing the RJD chief of 'disrespecting' everyone. 'Placing Dr Ambedkar's photo at his feet is a huge insult to our god and to all Dalits. I am not surprised. The public may see this as something new… But they must realise that if he can insult everyone, why would he spare Baba saheb? Society is watching and understanding everything, and I believe even Lalu ji's own community will not tolerate this arrogance,' Manjhi said. Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad called the incident a 'grave insult' to the Constitution. 'Ambedkar stands as a pillar of our Constitution and embodies social justice. Such behaviour reveals a feudal mentality,' he said. Lok Jan Shakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP Shambhavi Choudhary, who represents the Samastipur seat, echoed similar views. Accusing the RJD of 'deceiving Dalit and Mahadalit communities,' Choudhary said: 'The RJD is continuously misleading the Dalit and Mahadalit communities who have stood by them. Yet, whenever given the chance, they end up disrespecting Dalits and their rights.' She added: 'Ambedkar ji fought for our rights and gave us a voice and strength. This is a moment for the people of Bihar to become aware… If they (RJD) truly respect Dalits, how could they allow Ambedkar ji's portrait to be placed at their feet? Lalu Yadav did not even react or ask for the photo to be moved. He was happy to have Ambedkar ji's photo at his feet.' On its part, the RJD however dismissed the NDA leaders' allegations as 'politically motivated'. RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari said the video was 'deliberately misrepresented' to malign Lalu's image and polarise Dalit voters ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. 'It's BJP's propaganda. They don't have any topic. BJP themselves have been known for disrespecting Baba Sahab. Lalu ji has always championed the cause of social justice and has the highest respect for Dr Ambedkar. They are distorting facts for electoral gains,' he said.
