PU heritage buildings develop cracks after metro tunneling, officials promise repair
Patna: Several heritage buildings of 108-year-old Patna University (PU), including the recently renovated historic Wheeler Senate House (renamed Jayaprakash Narayan Anushad Bhawan), have developed some prominent cracks because of the ongoing underground metro rail tunneling on city's Ashok Raj Path.
Following a complaint by the university, the metro rail project officials have inspected the cracks in the buildings, also including the administrative block of Patna Science College and geography department of 162-year-old Patna College located on Ashok Raj Path. These buildings had developed cracks during the construction of an underground tunnel for the metro rail project about three months ago.
The metro project officials have observed that during the construction process, the use of tunnel boring machines can cause vibrations and disturb the ground, leading to cracks in nearby structures.
They assured the PU authorities of getting all the cracks and damages in the buildings repaired soon, said PU dean of students' welfare and information officer, Anil Kumar.
"A portion of the PU vocational courses building located on Patna Science College campus was also demolished due to the ongoing metro construction work, but it has been repaired now. Institute of Psychological Research and Services (IPRS), presently located at Krishna Kunj, will also be temporarily shifted to the repaired vocational courses building.

The existing IPRS building will be demolished soon so that a new science block (G+8 structure) can be constructed on the site," he said.
Academics mostly rue the development of cracks in the 99-year-old Wheeler Senate House, which has been renovated by the state govt at a cost of about Rs 3 crore just a couple of years back.
This hall, which compared favourably with the convocation halls of Oxford and Cambridge, served as a venue not only for senate meetings but also for other ceremonies, hosting personalities like Lord Mountbatten, Sarojini Naidu, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, C D Deshmukh, economist V K R V Rao and Vijayalakshmi Pandit at convocations.
Besides, scientists like Jagadish Chandra Bose, C V Raman, Meghnad Saha, Satyen Bose and S K Mitra addressed the students and faculty members on different occasions here.
People recall the historic public meeting held in the hall in 1946, in which Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru had to face much embarrassment owing to the communal disturbances in the state. It was Jayaprakash Narayan who had brought the situation under control and pacified the agitated people.
It was in this hall, where the representatives of students' unions of all universities, at a convention organised by the Patna University Students' Union in 1973, adopted a resolution for launching a statewide agitation against the misrule of the then govt. The agitation started just a few months later under the patronage of Jayaprakash Narayan, which ultimately changed the political scenario of the entire country.

3 loan recovery agents held for ‘illegally giving farmer's JCB to dowry death accused Shashank Hagawane'
The Pimpri Chinchwad police on Thursday arrested three loan recovery agents in connection with the offence lodged against Vaishnavi Hagawane's husband, Shashank, and mother-in-law, Lata, for allegedly cheating and threatening a farmer at gunpoint. The Hagawane family hit the headlines last month after Vaishnavi, the daughter-in-law of expelled Nationalist Congress Party leader Rajendra Hagawane, allegedly died by suicide following harassment over dowry. Shashank and Lata were arrested after Prashant Yelwande, a farmer from Nigoje village in Khed taluka of Pune district, lodged a First Information Report at the Mahalunge MIDC police station in Pimpri Chinchwad on May 29. The duo were remanded to police custody till June 6 for further investigation. The police identified the accused arrested on Thursday as Yogesh Rajendra Raskar, 25, Ganesh Potle, 30, and Vaibhav Pingle, 27, of Talegaon Dhamdhere. According to the police, Yelwande had purchased a JCB from Shashank and Lata for Rs 24 lakh in March 2022. There was a bank loan of about Rs 19 lakh on the said machine, and Yelwande paid Rs 5 lakh and took possession of it, the police added. It was allegedly decided that he should further pay Rs 50,000 per month to the Hagawanes for repaying the loan. The police said Yelwande paid Rs 6.7 lakh to Shashank and Lata, but they did not deposit the money in the bank for loan repayment. Shivaji Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Pimpri Chinchwad, said that the legal manager of the bank had not given any instructions to the recovery agency for taking away the JCB from Yelwande. 'But still, the accused Raskar, Potle and Pingle, working for the private recovery agency, illegally took the JCB from Yelwande and gave it to Shashank Hagawane around August 2024. So we have placed the three persons under arrest,' he added. According to the police, after the JCB was taken away from him, Yelwande demanded his money, around Rs 11.7 lakh, from the Hagawane family. But Shashank allegedly threatened him at gunpoint. The police had earlier arrested Shashank, Lata and others from the Hagawane family for the alleged dowry death of his wife Vaishnavi at their residence in Bhukum. Vaishnavi's father Anil Kaspate had lodged an FIR in this case at the Bavdhan police station in Pimpri Chinchwad on May 17, alleging that Vaishnavi's in-laws had been abusing her, mentally and physically, demanding Rs 2 crore to purchase a property. Kaspate also said in the FIR that there were injury marks on Vaishnavi's body, alleging that this suggested physical abuse, adding that he feared that his daughter had been murdered.

'No tragedy despite 1.5 lakh crowd at final': BJP leader BY Vijayendra slams Karnataka govt over stampede, says RCB owners should also provide compensation
BENGALURU: Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led state government over the Bengaluru stampede that claimed 11 lives and left many injured near the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Calling the tragedy 'avoidable,' Vijayendra demanded accountability from top state leaders and called for their resignation. 'Even before the players had left the Taj West End Hotel, the stampede had occurred near the Chinnaswamy Stadium,' Vijayendra said, questioning the government's decision to proceed with the IPL victory celebrations at Vidhana Soudha despite reports of deaths and injuries. He also criticised deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar for attending the felicitation event at the stadium while the tragedy was unfolding. 'At the time of the incident, ambulances were not arranged. The state government must take full responsibility for the incident that occurred yesterday,' he said. Vijayendra further took issue with the state's decision to order a magistrate inquiry instead of a judicial probe, alleging a lack of transparency and seriousness.
