O'Neill homers again as Orioles rout Blue Jays 16-4 in the opener of a doubleheader
Ramón Urías homered twice, and Gunnar Henderson also went deep for the last-place Orioles, who have outscored the AL East leaders 27-8 in the first two games of this series.
Charlie Morton (7-8) allowed three runs in six innings for the Orioles, yielding a two-run homer by Addison Barger in the fourth.
Baltimore loaded the bases with nobody out in the first and third against Blue Jays starter Easton Lucas (3-3). O'Neill and Cedric Mullins hit sacrifice flies in the first, and Urías and Mullins did so in the third.
Toronto fought back to within a run before the Orioles scored six in the sixth. Henderson hit an RBI single, and O'Neill followed with a three-run shot. Then Urías hit a drive to center that made it 9-3.
Henderson added a three-run shot and Urías hit another solo homer in the seventh.
Joey Loperfido hit a solo homer for Toronto in the eighth.
Ali Sánchez, who caught the first seven innings, pitched the eighth for the Blue Jays. He struck out fellow catcher Alex Jackson swinging on a looping pitch clocked at 35 mph. Jackson Holliday hit Baltimore's fifth sacrifice fly later that inning.

With another game still to come, the Blue Jays left reliever Lazaro Estrada in to allow six runs in 3 1/3 innings. He hit two of the first three Baltimore batters in the sixth to start that big rally.

TORONTO - Shane Bieber hopes to be a popular pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays down the stretch, but realizes that in his new home, he'll be the second most famous Bieber after Canadian pop icon Justin Bieber. The Blue Jays' Bieber once wore a jersey with 'Not Justin' on the back during a players' weekend in 2019, which prompted Canada's Bieber to don a 'Not Shane Bieber' shirt a few weeks later. 'Well, it turns out I'm probably the second most famous Bieber in most cities,' said the 30-year-old righty who arrived in Toronto on Friday to meet manager John Schneider, his new teammates, coaches and support staff. The Blue Jays acquired Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians before Thursday's trade deadline in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Khal Stephen. Bieber made the 4 1/2-hour drive from Cleveland, where he was put through the ringer by customs officials at the border. 'They shook me down,' Bieber said with a smile. 'It was nothing too crazy. Once I got there, we got out of the car and explained the situation. I got my papers and made my way.' When will Bieber, who underwent Tommy John surgery on April 12, 2024, make his way to the mound for the Toronto Blue Jays? Last Tuesday, he made his fourth rehab start, this time for double-A Akron with a four-inning, 59-pitch outing, giving up three hits, including a homer. He is slated to pitch Sunday for triple-A Buffalo and hopes to go five innings and 70 to 75 pitches. After his next outing, he and the Blue Jays will determine what's next. 'The medical staff in Cleveland adopted (a one-game-at-a-time) mentality, and I think these guys have as well, and I know that they're gonna take great care of me,' Bieber said. 'Like I said, I feel great.' Bieber threw a light bullpen session for Toronto pitching coach Pete Walker before Friday's series opener against the Kansas City Royals. 'I'm most pleased with not thinking about my health, and that says a lot about how far I've come post-surgery, where my body's at, where my arm's at,' Bieber said. 'I'm focused on ramping up to compete in the big leagues, and that's a fun place to be. That's what I've missed.' Bieber did his homework as to what to expect after Tommy John surgery. He's bent the ear of former teammates Matt Boyd and Alex Cobb, who both made strong recoveries from Tommy John surgery. He'll bring some post-season experience to the American League East-leading Blue Jays. The 2020 Cy Young Award winner has pitched in the playoffs twice, in his Cy Young season and again in 2022. 'My initial reaction was I was excited,' he said of being traded to the Blue Jays. 'I wasn't totally anticipating it, but I wasn't shocked.' How the Blue Jays fit Bieber into the starting rotation when he's ready remains to be seen. The newcomer, however, is open to a six-pitcher rotation if Schneider and Walker decide to ease Bieber back and give the veteran staff some rest. Newcomers Helsley, Rogers and Mullins join Mets in the thick of a pennant race
NEW YORK (AP) — Pitchers Ryan Helsley and Tyler Rogers and outfielder Cedric Mullins jumped into a pennant race Friday when they joined the National League-East leading New York Mets in search of the franchise's first championship since 1986. 'Everybody's very excited — they're matching my excitement to be here,' Rogers said before the Mets opened a three-game series against San Francisco. The Giants traded Rogers to New York for José Buttó and a pair of prospects Wednesday. The Mets, who fell to the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in last year's NLCS, entered Friday with a half-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. 'From looking across the dugout a week ago, this is a team where you're like, man, this team is the complete package,' Rogers said as the teams met for the second straight weekend. 'So I'm very excited to be a part of it. Whatever they need from me, hopefully I can give it to them.' Helsley, who had 21 saves for the St. Louis Cardinals before being acquired for a trio of prospects Wednesday, and Rogers, a side-armer whose 392 appearances since 2019 are tied for the fourth-most in the majors, are expected to fortify a bullpen that was beginning to show vulnerability ahead of All-Star closer Edwin Díaz. 'At first I was kind of surprised, honestly, having Díaz here,' Helsley said. 'But in the playoffs, you'll take as many good arms as you can get.' Detroit Tigers trade Central Michigan alumnus Dietrich Enns to Baltimore Orioles
PHILADELPHIA — The Detroit Tigers cut left-hander Dietrich Enns by designating him for assignment, then traded him in their final move on the day of the trade deadline. The Tigers traded Enns to the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, July 31, in exchange for cash considerations. For the Tigers, Enns posted a 5.60 ERA with four walks and 15 strikeouts across 17⅔ innings in seven games (two starts). He owns a 4.30 ERA in his MLB career, spanning 44 innings in parts of three seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2017), Tampa Bay Rays (2021) and Tigers (2025).
