
Veeam unveils cloud solution to protect Microsoft Entra ID
Veeam has launched Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft Entra ID as a new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution to support organisations' identity management needs.
According to Veeam, Microsoft Entra ID, previously known as Azure AD, encounters over 600 million attacks daily, making identity protection a key area for enterprises. The new offering is intended to simplify data resilience for Entra ID tenants, enabling organisations to protect assets tied to user identity and access.
Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft Entra ID follows the recent expansion of the broader Veeam Data Cloud platform, which delivers backup, security, and management for data in both on-premises and cloud environments through a unified system. The solution integrates cloud-native technologies and AI acceleration, aiming to enhance business continuity and operational efficiency while simplifying administrative tasks.
Niraj Tolia, Chief Technology Officer at Veeam, commented, "Security starts with managing your users and ensuring the right people have access to the right systems. That's why protecting Entra ID is so important, and why it's the latest addition to our Veeam Data Cloud platform. We are giving customers greater simplicity with an enterprise-ready, pre-hardened, and self-configured SaaS solution that removes the burden of managing and maintaining complex backup infrastructure."
The service aims to address a range of threats and administrative issues, including cybersecurity attacks, compliance requirements, accidental deletions, limitations on the recycle bin, and policy misconfigurations. Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft Entra ID offers backup and restore capabilities for users, groups, application registrations, and other Entra ID objects. The company highlights the use of unlimited storage and a centralised user interface to streamline protection and recovery processes.
The main features of Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft Entra ID include Proactive Protection, which increases visibility and control over changes to Entra ID, supporting business continuity, security, and compliance. Effortless Recovery facilitates the restoration of users, groups, attributes, application registrations, logs, and related metadata. Comprehensive Inclusion offers a managed backup service handled by experts, taking care of updates, maintenance, and security patches.
Research indicates the critical importance of securing identity services. Krista Case, Research Director at The Futurum Group, said, "Protecting Microsoft Entra ID has never been more important. In fact, one in five respondents in Futurum's Cybersecurity Decision Maker IQ research indicated credential compromise/account takeover as a security incident most impacting their organisation. Veeam is making resiliency for these environments, including visibility into potentially malicious behaviour and automated backup jobs, accessible to a broader range of customers by delivering it in a managed and hosted model with the addition of Entra ID protection to Veeam Data Cloud."
Veeam Data Cloud already covers protection for Microsoft 365 workloads. With the inclusion of Entra ID, customers can now bundle the new service with existing Veeam Data Cloud options for Microsoft 365 Flex and Premium, enabling ongoing user-based pricing models. This integration is designed to support consistency and flexibility for customers managing multiple Microsoft cloud workloads.
Customers are able to manage all their workloads, including those tied to Entra ID, across a single user interface. According to Veeam, features such as advanced security controls, role-based access management, and simplified reporting are also extended to encompass the new service. The SaaS nature of Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft Entra ID relieves customers of the need to conduct updates or security fixes themselves, as these responsibilities are handled by Veeam's managed service.
Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft Entra ID is now available for organisations seeking additional measures to safeguard identity management within their cloud operations.

Varonis launches unified identity protection platform
Varonis has announced the introduction of Varonis Identity Protection, an enhancement to its Data Security Platform that aims to provide organisations with unified visibility and control of data and identities. The company stated that most existing identity security tools operate independently, lacking knowledge of the specific data each identity is authorised to access and the methods by which data is accessed. The new Varonis offering seeks to connect these aspects, enabling organisations to reduce unnecessary access to sensitive data, address identity posture issues, and counter identity-based threats including those from insiders, stolen credentials, and artificial intelligence tools and agents. Varonis Identity Protection sets itself apart from traditional identity products through its capability to calculate the potential data exposure, known as the blast radius, for every identity should it be compromised. The system distinguishes between human and non-human identities, classifies them as internal, guest, external, or privileged, and monitors their interactions with company data in order to detect anomalous behaviour. "Identity and data are deeply intertwined — securing one without the other leaves dangerous gaps." He continued, "By unifying identity and data security, Varonis gives customers the context they need to better ensure identity threats don't become data breaches," Yaki Faitelson, Varonis Chief Executive Officer, President, and Co-Founder, said. Key features of Varonis Identity Protection highlighted by the company include machine learning-based identity classification, continuous user behaviour analysis, identity threat detection and response (ITDR), and identity posture management with automated remediation. The solution integrates with identity providers such as Entra ID, Okta, and Active Directory to map user accounts across environments. By employing machine learning, Varonis automatically classifies identities by tagging executive roles, privileged users, service accounts, and non-human identities, among others. Through peer analysis and continuous user behaviour monitoring, Varonis detects anomalies in how identities are used, flagging deviations from typical patterns to identify potentially risky activity at an earlier stage. The platform's identity threat detection and response capabilities enable the monitoring of identity providers for indicators of compromise. This includes alerting on suspicious login attempts, unexpected password resets, changes in multi-factor authentication, and policy adjustments, all contextualised with each account's data access history. Varonis Identity Protection's posture management features allow it to identify issues such as stale contractor accounts, excessive permissions, and missing multi-factor authentication. The platform then automatically mitigates these risks by revoking access, removing entitlements, and eliminating unused accounts. The capability enhancements to identity protection also extend to Varonis Managed Data Detection and Response (MDDR). With these improvements, Varonis analysts are able to detect and address a wider array of threats more rapidly and effectively across customer environments. Varonis was recently named a Leader in Identity Threat Detection and Response by research and analysis firm GigaOm, with specific recognition for the platform's detection and automated response capabilities.

Veeam launches Kasten v8 to unify VM & Kubernetes protection
Veeam has announced the launch of Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes v8, aimed at unifying virtual machine and container data protection for enterprises. This latest release introduces enhancements that allow organisations to manage both traditional virtual machines (VMs) and modern Kubernetes applications through a single platform. The new version also integrates with Veeam Vault, offering a fully managed offsite backup solution, and is intended to improve operational efficiency by consolidating data management under Veeam's suite of tools. Gaurav Rishi, Vice President of Product Management at Veeam, commented on the launch: "Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes v8 marks a significant leap forward in our mission to provide enterprises with unparalleled data resilience for Kubernetes environments." "This latest version enables organisations to seamlessly manage traditional VMs and modern applications on a single platform while ensuring data is secure and accessible. Kasten v8 arrives with several new features targeted at enterprise customers. Among those is the ability to unify data resilience for VMs on Kubernetes alongside containerised applications, aiming to streamline operations and increase efficiency. The file-level recovery (FLR) function for KubeVirt VMs facilitates granular restores, allowing recovery of individual files from backups without recreating whole VM clones. This is designed to support enterprises using solutions such as Red Hat OpenShift Virtualisation. The release also introduces a virtual machine dashboard intended to provide a workload-centric perspective, helping teams identify each VM's dependencies within Kubernetes clusters and configure backup consistency more easily. Veeam is extending freedom of choice to organisations through enhanced multi-CPU architecture support, which enables use of ARM and IBM Power to optimise costs. The company has also broadened support for the NetApp Trident storage provisioner and introduced backup capabilities for ONTAP NAS "Economy" volumes. These features allow for more flexibility in how companies back up data across different storage systems. Security measures have been expanded with this version. Features such as secure self-service cross-cluster migrations, restricted privileges for Kasten Pods and ISO 27001 certification are intended to increase customers' security profiles. The adoption of a least-privilege approach is designed to both minimise risks and improve compliance. The process of encrypting passkeys has also been simplified to help enterprises maintain robust security while improving operational efficiency. Operational improvements in Kasten v8 include a refreshed user interface, updated policy management systems and the Restore Point Catalog, designed to help administrators manage backups and restore operations more easily. The Per Policy Protection Status provides a clearer view into backup policies for specific namespaces, making it easier to identify and address potential issues quickly. In support of Red Hat OpenShift Virtualisation Engine, which is positioned as a replacement for legacy virtualisation solutions, Veeam is introducing Kasten for Modern Virtualization. This tailored pricing option aims to integrate with Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization Engine and is the result of collaboration between Veeam and Red Hat.
