Where Clemson stands in ESPN's 2025 ACC college football projections, preview
ESPN's Bill Connelly isn't ready to crown Clemson football as a true national champion contender just yet — even if the numbers say the Tigers could be back in the mix.
In his latest ACC preview, Connelly calls Clemson the clear favorite to win the league and return to the playoff, but he questions whether Dabo Swinney's squad can go the distance.
'It's a no-brainer to place Clemson atop the ACC pile. That makes the Tigers one of the surest picks to make the CFP. Where I struggle is when it comes to envisioning them winning three to four playoff games,' he wrote.
He points to a defense that didn't live up to its talent last season and an offense that lacked enough big plays to scare elite teams. 'The run defense was mediocre even with (Peter) Woods' efforts up front, and the pass defense was merely good, not great,' he noted. Clemson's passing game didn't exactly pop either — 'Mafah and Haynes produced some lovely big runs, but the Tigers ranked 80th in yards per successful dropback, and Klubnik averaged just 11.7 yards per completion,' Connelly added.
He also thinks a bit of good fortune helped: 'Without those bounces in Charlotte, there's no way we're talking about a top-five team here.'
Still, he sees the potential. 'If the Tigers are ever going to be elite again, you figure it's going to come with this wonderfully experienced team… It's going to be a lot of fun finding out what the Tigers can do. And there's a chance they prove this hater wrong.'
Connelly's SP+ model slots Clemson eighth nationally, with a league-best 36.8% chance of winning at least 11 games. His numbers show the Tigers return more proven production than anyone — 85% on offense, 76% on defense — setting up a chance to quiet any doubts this fall.

Paul Finebaum praises Moore's words but doubts Michigan's CFP bid with Underwood at QB
Pundits are all over the map when it comes to assessing Michigan football in the preseason. Though expected to be ranked in the polls entering 2025, a lot are saying that the schedule is too hard (there's only one team on it that was a College Football Playoff team last year, and Michigan beat them), or that there's too much to fix. "I like what he said there. It's hard to find a criticism of a coach who ended the season beating your biggest rival and then beating Alabama in a bowl game with almost no starters as a double-digit (underdog)," Finebaum said. "Sherrone Moore is saying the right things. My question is, does he have the right stuff as a head coach? He did a nice job filling in for Jim Harbaugh during all of the controversy. But he didn't show anyone much last year other than at the very end. He's gotta be more consistent. He does only the best quarterback coming into college football this year in Bryce Underwood. How long will Bryce Underwood take to matriculate? And if he can get him going quickly, they have a chance for a CFP bid, but I don't think they're going to make it. I think they'll fall just short." Douglas agrees with most of Finebaum's assessment, but thinks that just by having Underwood under center, if he is named the starter as expected, that will fix a lot of ills given the problems Michigan had a year ago. "They're gonna be better because the speed bump in 2024 was the quarterback position," Douglas said. "There's three games that I have circled: it's the Oklahoma game when they go to Oklahoma, it's the Nebraska game, and it's the Ohio State game. If they can go 2-1 in those games, those three games that I just mentioned, they have an opportunity to make the College Football Playoff because their schedule isn't hard." Fans will get an opportunity to see the new-look Wolverines on August 30 when they host New Mexico for the 2025 season opener at The Big House.

Texas A&M will reportedly host 2026 4-star SF for an official visit next month
New Texas A&M basketball head coach Bucky McMillan has been hard at work building his first roster with the program, already landing 13 players, including 11 from the transfer portal, led by forward Mackenzie Mgbako (Indiana) and guard Pop Isaacs (Creighton), who will more than likely lead the Aggies in several categories next season. This month, outside of looking for two more veterans to add to the roster, coupled with transfer forward Rashaun Agee's impending eligibility news, McMillan has offered a long list of 2026 recruits, looking to land at least three, four, or five prospects in the cycle, which would be an impressive feat for a Texas A&M program that isn't considered a blue-blood basketball program. On Saturday, more progress was made, as it was announced that the son of former Dallas Mavericks star forward Josh Howard, 2026 four-star SF Bryson Howard, is set to take an official visit to Texas A&M on August 29-30, followed by North Carolina, Texas, Duke, Houston, Kentucky, UConn, and Tennessee in September and early October. This is great news for the Aggies, who offered Howard two months ago, while McMillan and his veteran staff have already developed a solid relationship with the incoming senior. Last season, Howard averaged 17.1 points per game, 10.4 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game in nearly 26 minutes of play. According to 247Sports, Howard is currently positioned as the 28th-ranked prospect in the 2026 class, the 11th-ranked small forward, and the 2nd-ranked prospect in Texas. Former Auburn first baseman Cooper McMurray lands deal with Atlanta Braves
McMurray will get his chance to play professional baseball after landing a free agent deal with the Atlanta Braves. One of Auburn's top sluggers is getting his chance to play professional baseball. Cooper McMurray, who just ended his college career after playing three seasons at Auburn, recently landed a deal with the Atlanta Braves. McMurray's deal with the Braves is of the undrafted free agent variety. McMurray had a consistent career at Auburn by knocking 42 career home runs, hitting an even 14 in all three seasons on the Plains. He never hit below .270 during his time in Auburn, and logged a career-best .326 as a redshirt senior in 2025. His average was not the only stat that McMurray reached a high in this season, as he also recorded 76 hits, 19 doubles, and 59 RBI. He ends his college career with 51 home runs, 154 RBI, and a career average of .293. McMurray joins Deric Fabian by signing an undrafted free agent deal. Fabian landed one with the Colorado Rockies shortly after the 2025 MLB draft. The duo joins Ike Irish, Eric Snow, Carson Myers, and, Parker Carlson in signing deals with MLB organizations.
