Hall of Fame Game winners, losers: Trey Lance, Chargers crush Lions
WINNERS
Trey Lance
The high point of his NFL career was being the No. 3 overall pick of the 2021 draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Since then, Lance has been held back by injury, inexperience and lack of opportunity - Brock Purdy taking advantage of his absence with the Niners before Lance sat behind Dak Prescott for two years with the Dallas Cowboys.
Balling out in a preseason game won't erase years of frustration for Lance, but he flashed the talent commensurate with a man taken so high in the draft - ripping the ball downfield, making good decisions and showing off his mobility. And, yes, he was playing against fellow backups, but the poise, confidence and joy was unmistakable as Lance finished 13-for-20 for 120 yards and two touchdowns through the air.

Thursday's performance won't necessarily vault him past Taylor Heinicke to be Justin Herbert's primary backup for the Bolts. But Lance is playing for a coach, Jim Harbaugh, who's a former quarterback with a reputation for maximizing his passers. It was just 13 years ago that Harbaugh rolled with little-known dual-threat QB Colin Kaepernick over former No. 1 pick Alex Smith, a decision that propelled the 49ers all the way to Super Bowl 47. Just sayin'.
Nikko Reed
The undrafted Chargers rookie corner carried his training camp momentum over into his professional debut, picking off a pass and returning it 60 yards to set up LA's second first-quarter touchdown. And make no mistake, there are jobs and reps to be won in this secondary.
Pro Football Hall of Fame
Earlier on Thursday, the HOF announced that KeyBank will sponsor a new event center, its construction scheduled to begin later this fall. The Hall hopes the venue, which will have nearly 20,000 square feet of space, will be open in time for the induction of the 2027 class of Hall of Famers. Heat and rain weather have been known to regularly disrupt enshrinement ceremonies - and the Hall of Fame Game, too - in recent years.

Nyheim Miller-Hines
He last played in the NFL in 2022, suffering a torn ACL during a jet ski accident in the summer of 2023. Now trying to make the Chargers' roster, Miller-Hines' versatility fueled a positive first step Thursday. He had 79 all-purpose yards on 11 touches, getting eight carries and catching a pass while returning one punt and one kickoff.
Grant Stuard
A fifth-year reserve linebacker for the Lions, he was a bright spot for Detroit's defense, making four tackles - including a sack and another for a loss. With Malcolm Rodriguez still recovering from a torn ACL, Stuard could create an opportunity to get on the field this season when Detroit loads the box.
LOSERS
Grant Stuard
Lions coach Dan Campbell allowed Stuard to return the night's opening kickoff, which he advanced 26 yards ... before fumbling. The Chargers were in the end zone five plays later. There's a reason linebackers don't return kickoffs, Coach ... though, to Stuard's credit he brought the next one back 36 yards. But overall, a tough outing for Detroit's special teams, Jakobie Keeney-James also muffing a punt on a night when the Lions finished with five turnovers.
Jared Goff's backups
Neither Kyle Allen, who started behind center for Detroit, nor Hendon Hooker distinguished themselves while trying to earn the nod to back up Goff, the Lions' QB1, this year. Heading into his seventh season, Allen's experience should serve him well. And yet he served up a pair of bad interceptions instead - and both were poor decisions, not the functions of playing with bottom-of-the-roster players.
And Hooker, a third-round pick two years ago who effectively took a medical redshirt as a rookie, still needs to show he's ready for a bigger role. He was also picked off, though his INT can be fairly attributed to rookie WR Dominic Lovett, who had the ball taken away from him downfield.
Detroit Lions
The HOF Game typically pits two teams sending at least one former star into the Hall, and longtime Bolts TE Antonio Gates will be enshrined Saturday as will San Diego native Eric Allen. But not only did no Lions go in this year, two players who victimized them for years - former Green Bay Packers WR Sterling Sharpe and former Minnesota Vikings DE Jared Allen - will be honored. Sorry, Lions fans, you'll have to take pride in the fact that Gates hails from Motown.

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones does not intend to trade Micah Parsons after the star defensive end said he wants to leave the team amid a breakdown in negotiating a contract extension. 'Surely you guys have been around this stuff and know how to recognize negotiation talk, that type of thing. And so that's where I put that,' Jones said after practice Saturday, one day after Parsons posted on social media to request a trade. No stranger to public and prolonged disputes with standout players, Jones insisted the standoff with Parsons is no different than past situations ranging from alternating approaches by quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb last year to the 1993 in-season holdout by running back Emmitt Smith. 'Well, it's just that you've seen it so often, and you've seen it with other clubs. You go through the process. It's a highly sensitive time when you're guaranteeing somebody almost $200m, that's sensitive stuff,' Jones said. Parsons remains at training camp, where he has yet to practice because of a back injury. He did not speak to reporters, leaving the field at the same time as Jones was fielding questions for more than 15 minutes. Parsons is going into the final season of his five-year rookie contract and is seeking a new deal that would almost certainly make him the highest-paid defender in NFL history. He could be franchise tagged in 2026 without a contract extension. A first-round draft pick in 2021, Parsons has at least 12 sacks in each of his four seasons with the Cowboys and 52 1/2 for his career. The crux of the disagreement between Parsons and the Cowboys seems to be over the specific nature of talks with Jones during the spring that Parsons did not consider formal negotiations. Jones disagrees, believing they had come together on a deal. 'The key is that we've got an agreement,' Jones said. 'Let's really do understand that we've got an agreement now.' Parsons wrote in his statement that the Cowboys have refused to engage his agent David Mulugheta in the process, which along with remarks by Jones during a 21 July press conference, contributed to his decision to publicly request a trade. Asked if what was discussed in March was still on the table, Jones said, 'Micah took it off. He took it off.' Jones said that he expects Parsons to work off the framework established during the disputed spring talks. 'Now, if we're going to adjust an agreement, then he's a must and I'm a must,' Jones said of Parsons' involvement in future negotiations. Multiple Cowboys players have posted their support for Parsons on social media, with Lamb writing, 'Just pay the man.' Fans shouted their support for Parsons when Jones walked on the field midway through practice, and there was a sustained chant of 'Let's pay Micah!' at the end of Saturday's workout. Jones did not answer directly when asked if he expects Parsons will be on the Cowboys for their season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on 4 September. Fears emerge that Donald Trump could jeopardize NFL's blockbuster deal with ESPN
There are fears that Donald Trump could block the NFL's multi-billion-dollar deal with ESPN, according to reports. Earlier this month, the NFL and ESPN agreed a blockbuster deal that will see the network broadcast seven more regular-season games, and have access to NFL Network and RedZone. In return, it is reported that the NFL will receive equity in ESPN. The shock announcement, first reported by The Athletic, angered many football fans. But now Front Office Sports reports that Trump could intervene in the deal, which is expected to require sign-off from the government. There is reportedly 'growing concern' that the president could try to 'delay, or block' the billion-dollar agreement. Trump has a history of involving himself in sports - particularly the NFL. Only recently, he has been a vocal critic of the new kickoff rules and recently threatened to disrupt the Commanders' new stadium plans if Washington didn't change their name back to the Redskins. A decade ago, he tried and failed to buy the Buffalo Bills for $1billion. In 2017, meanwhile, he called on NFL owners to fire players who take a knee during the national anthem. Colin Kaepernick sparked a nationwide debate when he protested against police brutality and racial injustice. Other players followed suit and they soon incurred the wrath of the White House. 'Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, "Get that son of a b**** off the field right now?" Out. He's fired. He's FIRED!' Trump said during a rally in Alabama. A year later, the president canceled the traditional White House reception with the Super Bowl winners after it emerged that only a small number of Eagles players planned to attend. Trump claimed Philadelphia disagreed 'with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country.' The president has also had feuds with ESPN and its parent company Disney. 'ESPN is paying a really big price for its politics (and bad programming). People are dumping it in RECORD numbers. NFL star Deebo Samuel left fuming after interviewer spills secret live on air in painful exchange
Commanders star Deebo Samuel was left shaking his head in disbelief after NFL Network's Mike Garafolo accidentally revealed the wide receiver is battling a hand injury - live on air. Garafolo was left red-faced at the end of an interview with Samuel during a segment on 'Inside Training Camp Live' earlier this week. 'Alright, edit that part out, just strike that... that didn't happen,' the reporter said after his on-air blunder drew glares from the wide receiver. Samuel joined NFL Network to discuss 'good vibes' around the Washington Commanders heading into the 2025 season. But the interview instead ended with a painfully awkward exchange. Samuel shook his head before the host offered his fist for the receiver to bump. 'I ain't getting anything now,' Garafolo said as the network cut away from the interview. 'This is ridiculous,' someone could then be heard saying. Samuel was traded to the Commanders back in March after six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.
