Congress' contributions in freedom movement must be highlighted, says leader

Congress Party in-charge of Gajapathinagaram Constituency Chitrada Durgaprasad on Friday said that the party's contribution in India's freedom movement and the development of Independent India should be highlighted for the present generation. He urged the students pursuing courses in History to ensure that others also know the importance of freedom struggle and sacrifices of great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and others. He hoisted tricolour in Gajapathinagaram office and asked the party activists to highlight the Congress Party's great role in achievement of independence from the British. He said that the BJP and its frontal organisations have been misusing social media platforms to undermine the contribution of the Congress Party and to show the first Prime Minister of the country Jawaharlal Nehru in a poor light. He hoped that the Congress would soon get back its glory as people have been observing the qualities of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

Karnataka govt. will safeguard interests of people displaced due to dam projects: Madhu Bangarappa

Minister for School Education Madhu Bangarappa, who is also the Minister in charge of Shivamogga district, has said that the Karnataka government will safeguard the interests of people displaced due to the Sharavathi dam project, and of the bagair hukum cultivators of the district. Speaking to reporters after hoisting the national flag in Shivamogga on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day on Friday, the Minister said that the government would not evict any cultivator. However, he admitted that in a couple of cases, the officials erred in their action with regard to clearing the encroachment. Mr. Bangarappa stated that the Congress party, before the Assembly polls, had promised the people of Shivamogga that it would resolve the issues concerning people displaced by dam projects. Since the party came to power, the government had been making efforts to fulfil its promise, which include taking the Centre into confidence and appointing an efficient advocate to present the case in the Supreme Court, he said. 'Almost 80% of the work has been completed. The farmers will get the rights over the land they have been cultivating,' he added. On the issue of improving the facilities at McGann Hospital in Shivamogga, the Minister said that he had spoken to the Ministers concerned, and appealed for additional facilities, including a trauma care centre. He said that he would make efforts to develop the hospital into a super-speciality one, as hundreds of patients from Shivamogga and neighbouring districts visit the hospital every day. Besides that, the Minister said that the government was planning to construct a district office complex close to the KSRTC bus stand in the city. The people should get access to all important offices at one place, he added. Earlier in the day, Mr. Bangarappa hoisted the national flag at Nehru Stadium. As many as 29 platoons of policemen, home guards, municipal workers, school children, and NCC cadets took part in the parade. The Minister felicitated meritorious students and achievers in different fields at the event. Students from Nandan Education Trust, Police Public School, and Ananya High School presented dance-drama shows on the occasion. Legislators S.N. Channabasappa, Dhananjaya Sarji, and Balkhees Banu; officers including Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegade, Superintendent of Police G.K. Mithun Kumar, and Zilla Panchayat CEO N. Hemanth; and others were present on the occasion.

Opposition hits out at Oil Ministry's poster featuring Savarkar and Gandhi

The Congress objected to an Independence Day poster released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas featuring V.D. Savarkar alongside Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters for allegedly elevating a 'British mercy petitioner like Savarkar over the Father of the Nation.' Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal said it is yet another attempt to 'distort' history and make heroes out of 'traitors'. In a post on X, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas posted a picture featuring the faces of Savarkar, Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh with the caption — 'Freedom was their gift, shaping the future is our mission'. 'As we celebrate our nation's independence, let's remember — liberty thrives when we nurture it every day, through unity, empathy, and action. Happy Independence Day,' the Ministry said. Hitting out at the government, Mr. Venugopal said: 'Every Independence Day, the Modi-led BJP makes it a point to distort history and make heroes out of traitors. This Orwellian image, elevating a British mercy petitioner like Savarkar over Gandhi ji - the undisputed Mahatma who got us freedom, and completely eliminating Pandit Nehru and Sardar Patel ji, shows their contempt for our freedom fighters.' 'What else can one expect from those whose forefathers collaborated with the British to sow the seeds of division and hatred that haunts us to this very day?' he said. Congress' media and publicity department head Pawan Khera also in a post in Hindi said: 'While mixing ethanol in petrol, now you've started mixing impurities even in freedom fighters. Those who couldn't become great in history, you're making them big on posters. The country is asking you for cheaper oil, not cheap comedy.' CPI(M) MP John Brittas also slammed the Oil Ministry's post. 'The deliberate elevation of Savarkar over Gandhi is not a coincidence but a calculated act. The government's actions undermine the nation's commitment to its secular Constitution. It is pertinent to note that Savarkar was an accused in Gandhi's assassination, though acquitted due to insufficient evidence,' Mr. Brittas said in a post on X. The BJP hit back at the Congress, with BJP general secretary (organisation) B.L. Santhosh responding to Mr. Khera's post saying: 'Sick brigade to the Savarkar lived and died for the country.'
