Over 100 people rescued after floodwaters strand Girl Scout group in North Park

Over 100 people were rescued after a stream in North Park flooded, stranding a group of Girl Scouts.
Rescue crews had to deploy a rope to help about 105 people to safety after flash flooding hit near their cabin, leaving them landlocked. A spokesperson for Allegheny County said the Girl Scouts were put in helmets and vests and moved through the receding waters.
Girl Scouts said they were at their pavilion getting ready for lunch when the skies opened up. Things quickly took a turn, but firefighters, police, EMS and swiftwater crews showed up to help.

"Our pavilion is right by the creek and so there was log and there was water everywhere and we looked over and there was water in the parking lot flooding over the road and so we quickly grabbed all of our food and walked up to the cabin and then we just got evacuated from there," said Girl Scout Samatha Oeler.
Allegheny County police said everyone was brought to safety and no one was injured.
"They gave us all life jackets and helmets and told us to hold on to the person in front of us and we had a rope and just kind of held on and just walked across," Girl Scout Lila Hall said.
Once they made it through the floodwaters, the Girl Scouts were picked up by their parents and headed home to get dry.

Hurricane Erin to pass by Del, NJ during August new moon; what that means for high tides

A new moon draws the highest tide of the month, but this week's timing could make Hurricane Erin's impact worse. Here's when and what to know about the August new moon. Hurricane Erin has maximum sustainted winds of 105 mph and is forecast to grow, as of 11 a.m. ET on Aug. 19, according to the National Hurricane Center. They've issued tropical storm conditions and coastal flooding for parts of North Carolina and life-threatening rip currents along East Coast beaches, many of which have already been shut down in Delaware and New Jersey. The dangerous storm is expected to cause beach erosion and coastal flooding in some areas, all of which could be worsened by the higher-than-normal tides this week, leading up to Saturday's new moon. Here's when and what to know about the August new moon and how it causes high tides. When is the next new moon? The next new moon, known as the black moon, will occur on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025 at 2:06 a.m. ET. Why does the moon causes high tides? High tides and low tides are caused by the moon because the moon's gravity pulls on everything on Earth, including the oceans. It is the primary force behind high tides, which pulls bulges of water on the side of the Earth closest to the moon, according to NASA. According to NOAA, the bulge on the side closest to the moon and the side farthest to the moon are high tides. When not in one of these bulges, it is low tide. As the Earth rotates, bodies of water pass through both of the bulges each day creating two high tide cycles and two low tides. Twice a month, during the full moon and new moon phases, the Earth, sun and moon line up and the combined gravitational power of the sun and moon cause extremely high tides where the bulges occur, called spring tides. High tides and storm surges — when storm winds whip up coastal waters — combine to create dangerous flooding conditions. What are the moon phases for August 2025? 🌓 First Quarter: Aug. 1🌕 Full Moon: Aug. 9🌗 Last Quarter: Aug. 16🌑 New Moon: Aug. 23🌓 First Quarter: Aug. 31 When is the next full moon? The next full moon in September will be the harvest moon. It will occur on Sept. 7, 2025 When is the next new moon? The next new moon will occur on Sept. 21, 2025. BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana, impacted by flooding; neighbors report "odors"

Officials at the BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana said their operations and facility have been impacted by flooding from Monday's storms. In a statement, the refinery said response and operations crews are on-site to "manage impacts" from the storms and the flooding. They said workers are burning materials in the flares to keep operations safe, and also said they are aware of reports of "odors" from the neighboring community and are also working to address that. Officials have closed 121st Street in Whiting between Shrage Avenue and Front Street due to what the refinery called "a sheen," though they did not specify exactly what would have caused that sheen. They said they have crews working on that "situation." "Whiting Refinery has detailed weather protection plans in place to handle these types of conditions and have been executing those plans from last night through this morning. Our top priority is the safety of our employees, contractors, and the community and the environment," the statement read. Heavy rain overnight has caused flooding across Northwest Indiana, causing schools to start late Tuesday, basements to flood and roads to close. Officials said Hammond and other surrounding communities saw more than six inches of rainfall in 24 hours. Please note: The above video is from an earlier, related report.

Storm damage, flooding closes several schools in Oswego, Illinois

Several schools in west suburban Oswego, Illinois, were damaged after overnight storms. Oswego students will have a virtual learning day after District 308 officials said a drain pipe failed, leading to flooding that damaged multiple floods. The district called restoration crews to 10 buildings, including Oswego East High School, Oswego High School, and Long Beach Elementary School. At Oswego East High School, multiple floors were damaged, and officials said "additional water continued to settle into the building through Sunday evening." At Oswego High School, crews are working to clear standing water in the gymnasium and surrounding hallways. Some schools held in-person classes despite the water damage. Despite the quick response to the flood damage, the district said cooling financial constraints and postponed maintenance have left the district with "urgent issues." "Several cooling systems are no longer functioning as intended, which has required ongoing patchwork fixes to avoid moisture accumulation and keep temperatures comfortable. Recent districtwide facility inspections underscored the significant attention needed to restore systems to their original reliability," District officials said in a written statement. Officials said the district continues to respond as quickly as resources allow to keep buildings safe and operational.
