JDT to renew rivalry with Thai giants Buriram

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) are relishing the chance to reignite their rivalry with Thai heavyweights Buriram United in this season's AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE).
The Southern Tigers will face Buriram, Melbourne City of Australia, Japan's Sanfrecce Hiroshima and China's Chengdu Rongcheng away, while hosting Shanghai Port and Shanghai Shenhua of China as well as Japan's Vissel Kobe and Machida Zelvia at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium (SSI).
Last season, Buriram ended JDT's campaign in the round of 16 with a 1-0 aggregate win at the SSI.
JDT technical director Alistair Edwards admitted the draw is tough, but believes the team can make a greater impact this year.
"The draw this year is equally as strong as last year and previous years. We had an extremely good campaign last year with massive sell-out crowds at the fortress SSI, so we're looking forward to more great games against top teams.
"We're playing new opposition and also familiar ones, like Buriram, where we're continuing that rivalry with our friendly rivals from Thailand. I think we were a little hard done by not qualifying at home last time, and everyone understands that.
"It doesn't sit well with us as a club because we think we are good enough to progress into the next stage. Buriram are always a great club and we enjoy playing against them, but now we've got to go to China and Japan as well."
JDT will play eight matches — four home and four away — in the 12-team East Asia elite league format, with the top eight advancing to the round of 16.
The 2025/2026 ACLE season will kick off in September and conclude in April next year. The round of 16 is scheduled for March 2-11, followed by a centralised finals stage in Saudi Arabia from April 17-25, 2026, covering the quarter-finals onwards.
JDT have been Malaysia's sole representative in Asia's top club competition since 2019, but are still chasing their first quarter-final appearance.
Meanwhile, in the ACL 2, it's set to be an all Asean contest for Selangor who are drawn in Group G with Bangkok United, Lion City Sailors of Singapore and Indonesia's Persib Bandung.
The ACL2 group stage is scheduled from Sept 16 - Dec 24, before moving into the Round of 16 between Feb 10-19, 2026. The quarter-finals and semi-finals are set for March 3-12 and April 7-15 respectively, with the final being held on May 16, 2026.

JDT's new faces make instant impact

Fierce battle: JDT's Teto Martin (front) vying for the ball with UM-Damansara's Saiful Iskandar Adha Saiful Azlan. — Bernama PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta'zim coach Xisco Munoz says his side are only just finding their rhythm despite a commanding 5-0 win over UM-Damansara in the FA Cup round of 16 first-leg tie, a result that highlighted the champions' depth. 'It's very important because some players never played together before, and they had a good connection tonight,' said the Spaniard after the match. 'I'm happy with the players who debuted – they understood our style, they gave intensity, and most importantly, they showed ambition.' At the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Saturday, Argentine wingback Jonathan Silva proved the catalyst, breaking the deadlock with a sharp finish in the 44th minute before doubling the lead 10 minutes into the second half. From there, JDT's new faces stepped into the spotlight. Spanish forward Teto Martin marked his debut with a goal in the 78th minute, while national striker Joao Figueiredo (90th) and young winger Celso Bermejo (91st) capped the rout. For Munoz, the result was less about the scoreline and more about the progress of his reshaped squad. Several players were handed their first starts, and the coach was eager to emphasise that the performance showed signs of chemistry developing. 'Once we scored the first goal, the game became more open. After that, we had more chances, more intensity in the wide areas, and the team played with better rhythm.' The coach also singled out Bermejo, the 20-year-old debutant who scored within minutes of coming on. 'He came in with ambition, and for a striker, the most important thing is to score. It gives confidence, and for us, it shows we have players pushing every single day to give their maximum.' Still, Munoz stressed that August was far too early to talk about peak form. With multiple competitions ahead – including the AFC Champions League where JDT face three Japanese clubs – the Spaniard underlined the need for patience. 'In my life, when I learn something, it's because I make a mistake first. So we will make mistakes, but we will improve,' he said. 'Every day, we try to build better connections, better solutions, and the most important thing is that when you are in JDT, you must always give your maximum.'

Fast Faisal finds form in FA Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Faisal Halim set the tone with two first-half goals as Selangor secured a 3-1 win over Malaysian University (MU) in the first leg of the FA Cup round of 16 at MBPJ Stadium yesterday. The Selangor captain wasted no time in stamping his authority, scoring inside four minutes before Alvin Fortes doubled the advantage midway through the first half. Faisal struck again in the 44th minute to give the Red Giants a 3-0 cushion at the break. But Selangor's failure to add to the tally in the second half allowed MU to grow into the game. And Aiman Danial pulled one back in the 84th minute. Selangor head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi admitted disappointment at conceding a late goal. "I'm delighted to get the win, but of course, the plan was not to concede. This is football, we have to learn from these moments," he said. MU head coach Yazli Yahya praised his players' response to the early setback against elite opposition. "Overall, I think our performance was good, even though we were punished very early," he said. "Some players were nervous naturally, because Selangor are a top side, but they still showed spirit. We also had chances, but with many new players, they must learn faster." Selangor remain overwhelming favourites in the second leg on Sept 13 at the same venue, but MU's late strike has injected belief into the side. Meanwhile, Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) cruised to a 5-0 victory over UM-Damansara United (UMD) at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. JDT head coach Xisco Munoz, when asked if JDT were at the level he expected, said: "Of course not. We need to improve a lot of things. "The new players need to understand our football, the intensity. We need to make mistakes to improve every day." After UMD captain Haris Mansur was sent off in the 37th minute for a second booking. JDT struck through Jonathan Silva (two goals), Alberto Diaz, Joao Figueiredo (penalty) and Celso Bermejo. UMD coach Ridzuan Abu Shah said: "I'm proud of our players, who fought and played with 10 men for 57 minutes, including extra time."

Host Vietnam and favourites Thailand tumble out as Myanmar and Australia set up an intriguing final at Asean women's football festival

Photos: Courtesy of SPORTFIVE HAI PHONG, Vietnam: Myanmar handed four-times champions Thailand a 2-1 semi-final defeat on Saturday while Australia beat tournament hosts Vietnam 2-1 at L ạch Tray Stadium to set up a mouth-watering A sean Women's MSIG Serenity Cup 2025 final. The countries will meet in Tuesday's (Aug 20) decider in H ai Ph ong with two-time champions Myanmar booking their berth as a result of another influential performance from the competition's top scorer Win Theingi Tun. Wirunya Kwenkasikum gave Thailand the lead with a deflected effort after six minutes but Win Theingi Tun levelled soon afterwards with a delightful curler before converting a penalty 18 minutes from time for her tournament-leading seventh goal. Wirunya was credited with the opener when Pichayatida Manowang's through-pass caused confusion in the Myanmar defence and Phyu Phwe's attempt to clear struck Wirunya on her shin before rolling past goalkeeper Myo Mya Mya Nyein. That was the first time Myanmar had trailed at the MSIG Serenity Cup 2025, but they were back on level terms seven minutes later as Win Thiengi Tun maintained her record of scoring in every game for her team at the tournament. The Myanmar captain found herself alone on the left edge of the Thai box after Natcha Kaewanta was unable to meet a cross by San Thaw Thaw and she took a touch before curling a right-footed effort past Pawarisa Homyamyen into the far corner. Myanmar were given the chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty in the 72nd minute when San Thaw Thaw's shot struck the left arm of Supapron Intaraprasit and Win Thiengi Tun sent Pawarisa the wrong way to earn her side victory. Australia, represented by their Under-23 team, booked their berth in the decider through first-half goals from Aideen Keane and Laticia McKenna, which set up a 2-1 win over Vietnam despite Nguy e n Thị B ich Thuy's late strike. The Australians were celebrating early as Keane put her side in front in the sixth minute, the Canberra United forward racing into the six-yard box to beat Tr a n Th i Kim Thanh to McKenna's cross from the left as it bent towards goal. By the 17th minute, the visitors had doubled their lead, Holly Furphy holding off L e Th i Di e m My to deliver possession to McKenna as she strode forward, and the midfielder unleashed a left-foot shot from more than 20 yards out that Kim Thanh was unable to keep out. Vietnam pushed for a way back into the game, and B ich Thuy saw her 88th minute shot fumbled over the goal-line by Lincoln to lift the home fans, but Australia held on to confirm their progress to the final for the first time since 2018. The winners of the MSIG Player of the Match award for the semi-finals are: Myanmar v Thailand: Win Theingi Tun (#7), Myanmar Vietnam v Australia: Nguy e n Th i B ich Thùy (#23), Vietnam The final between Myanmar and Australia will be played at L ạch Tray Stadium on Tuesday (Aug 19) with the match kicking off at 7.30pm. It will be preceded by the third-fourth place match between Vietnam and Thailand at 4.30pm.
