Fast Faisal finds form in FA Cup
The Selangor captain wasted no time in stamping his authority, scoring inside four minutes before Alvin Fortes doubled the advantage midway through the first half.
Faisal struck again in the 44th minute to give the Red Giants a 3-0 cushion at the break.
But Selangor's failure to add to the tally in the second half allowed MU to grow into the game. And Aiman Danial pulled one back in the 84th minute.
Selangor head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi admitted disappointment at conceding a late goal.
"I'm delighted to get the win, but of course, the plan was not to concede. This is football, we have to learn from these moments," he said.
MU head coach Yazli Yahya praised his players' response to the early setback against elite opposition.
"Overall, I think our performance was good, even though we were punished very early," he said.
"Some players were nervous naturally, because Selangor are a top side, but they still showed spirit. We also had chances, but with many new players, they must learn faster."
Selangor remain overwhelming favourites in the second leg on Sept 13 at the same venue, but MU's late strike has injected belief into the side.
Meanwhile, Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) cruised to a 5-0 victory over UM-Damansara United (UMD) at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium.
JDT head coach Xisco Munoz, when asked if JDT were at the level he expected, said: "Of course not. We need to improve a lot of things.
"The new players need to understand our football, the intensity. We need to make mistakes to improve every day."
After UMD captain Haris Mansur was sent off in the 37th minute for a second booking. JDT struck through Jonathan Silva (two goals), Alberto Diaz, Joao Figueiredo (penalty) and Celso Bermejo.
UMD coach Ridzuan Abu Shah said: "I'm proud of our players, who fought and played with 10 men for 57 minutes, including extra time."

Chelsea's world champions tag rings hollow after toothless display against Palace
LONDON, Aug 18 — A huge banner hailing the 'Champions of the World' was unfurled in The Shed end of the Stamford Bridge stadium before Chelsea's return to domestic action on Sunday hot on the heels of the club's success at the Club World Cup last month. But by the end of the 0-0 draw at home to Crystal Palace, Chelsea fans had no doubts about the differences between playing in a summer tournament and the rigours of the Premier League, even with the addition of yet more high-profile signings. Chelsea were fortunate not to have gone behind in the 13th minute when Eberechi Eze hammered home a free-kick for the visitors, only for his effort to be overruled on a technicality due to the position of a teammate in the defensive wall. The Blues' Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens failed to have much impact on their league debuts and it was stand-in 19-year-old defender Josh Acheampong – selected to play in the centre of the back line – who caught the eye. After the excitement generated by Chelsea's 3-0 drubbing of European champions Paris St Germain in the Club World Cup final on July 13, and pre-season wins over Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, Sunday's stalemate was frustrating for the home fans. Their chorus of 'We've won it all' faded as Chelsea struggled to pierce Palace's defensive lines and there was an air of resignation as the final whistle approached. Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca can take some positives from the performance of his young side against last season's FA Cup winners, including the impact of Brazilian winger Estevao who injected urgency and pace after he came on in the 54th minute. The 18-year-old had a great chance to win the game in the dying minutes when he was found by a cross from Marc Cucurella but he fired over the bar. Maresca praised Estevao for showing personality and said: 'He will be a very important player for this club.' The Italian manager played down suggestions Chelsea's preparations for the new season were too short due to the club competing in the United States until mid-July. 'I don't think so because until the end we competed, we tried to win the game,' he told reporters. Palace coach Oliver Glasner was peppered with questions about the future of England midfielder Eze who is reported to a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur and other clubs. 'It's the club's decision and we will see what happens,' the Austrian said. — Reuters

Immigration stamp their authority with first-leg victory
Aerial attack: Terengganu's Engku Mohd Nur Shakir Engku Yacob (right) in action against an Imigration player. — Bernama PETALING JAYA: Immigration stunned fellow Super League outfit Terengganu with a dramatic 2-1 win in their FA Cup round of 16, first-leg clash at the Batu Kawan Stadium in Penang yesterday. French striker Yan Mabella gave the visitors the lead in the 50th minute, but Immigration showed grit and character to fight back. Brazilian winger Rafael Holstein equalised just four minutes later before his compatriot, striker Joao Pedro, sent the home fans into raptures with the winner in the dying minutes. Head coach Yusri Che Lah praised his men for their resilience, especially after a shaky first half. 'Alhamdulillah, this victory is a blessing. It gives confidence to the players, especially since this is our first season competing at this level. The FA Cup is very different from the league, and today the boys showed great spirit,' said Yusri. However, Yusri admitted he is still expecting more from his foreign signings. 'They have only been here for a short time, just about two weeks, and are still adjusting. I'm not dissatisfied with them, but I want them to take this as a lesson and improve their fitness and rhythm. 'Once they are fully settled, they will give us a lot more,' he added. Despite the win, Yusri knows the job is far from over as Immigration will face Terengganu in the return leg on Sept 13 in Gong Badak. Meanwhile, in Paroi, Sabah all but booked their quarter-final spot after demolishing Bunga Raya 6-0 at the Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Darren Lok stole the show with a hattrick (10th, 47th, 53rd minutes, the last from the penalty spot), while Fergus Tierney (18th), Jafri Firdaus Chew (45+1, penalty), and Bosnian forward Ajdin Mujagic (81st) completed the rout.

JDT's new faces make instant impact
Fierce battle: JDT's Teto Martin (front) vying for the ball with UM-Damansara's Saiful Iskandar Adha Saiful Azlan. — Bernama PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta'zim coach Xisco Munoz says his side are only just finding their rhythm despite a commanding 5-0 win over UM-Damansara in the FA Cup round of 16 first-leg tie, a result that highlighted the champions' depth. 'It's very important because some players never played together before, and they had a good connection tonight,' said the Spaniard after the match. 'I'm happy with the players who debuted – they understood our style, they gave intensity, and most importantly, they showed ambition.' At the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Saturday, Argentine wingback Jonathan Silva proved the catalyst, breaking the deadlock with a sharp finish in the 44th minute before doubling the lead 10 minutes into the second half. From there, JDT's new faces stepped into the spotlight. Spanish forward Teto Martin marked his debut with a goal in the 78th minute, while national striker Joao Figueiredo (90th) and young winger Celso Bermejo (91st) capped the rout. For Munoz, the result was less about the scoreline and more about the progress of his reshaped squad. Several players were handed their first starts, and the coach was eager to emphasise that the performance showed signs of chemistry developing. 'Once we scored the first goal, the game became more open. After that, we had more chances, more intensity in the wide areas, and the team played with better rhythm.' The coach also singled out Bermejo, the 20-year-old debutant who scored within minutes of coming on. 'He came in with ambition, and for a striker, the most important thing is to score. It gives confidence, and for us, it shows we have players pushing every single day to give their maximum.' Still, Munoz stressed that August was far too early to talk about peak form. With multiple competitions ahead – including the AFC Champions League where JDT face three Japanese clubs – the Spaniard underlined the need for patience. 'In my life, when I learn something, it's because I make a mistake first. So we will make mistakes, but we will improve,' he said. 'Every day, we try to build better connections, better solutions, and the most important thing is that when you are in JDT, you must always give your maximum.'
