Panthers taking their time deciding on LT Ikem Ekwonu's 5th-year option
The Carolina Panthers aren't in a hurry to make the obvious decision on starting left tackle Ikem Ekwonu.
May 2 will be the final day where teams can officially exercise the fifth-year options on their 2022 first-rounds picks. And when it comes to Ekwonu's future, the Panthers feel like they don't have to get that paperwork in right away.
"We're just taking our time with that," president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan said on Tuesday. "There's no rush. We still have, I think it's May 2nd. So we're not rushing that. We're taking our time, and we'll have a plan in place."
Carolina selected Ekwonu, a Matthews, N.C. native and North Carolina State University standout, with the sixth overall pick in 2022. In the three seasons since, he's started each of his 49 games for the team on their blindside.
2024 marked Ekwonu's best pro campaign, at least according to Pro Football Focus. The 24-year-old earned career-highs in his overall offensive grade (71.7) and his run-blocking grade (80.5) while posting a 95.9-percent efficiency rate in pass protection.
Given Ekwonu's performance and the value of the left tackle position, the Panthers should be expected to trigger that fifth-year option in the coming weeks.

New Raiders DT Thomas Booker is already getting 1st-team reps
The Las Vegas Raiders recently acquired defensive tackle Thomas Booker in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles that sent Jakorian Bennett the other way. Booker made his Raiders debut in Thursday's 23-23 preseason Week 1 tie with the Seattle Seahawks. The fourth-year interior defender enjoyed an impressive debut. Booker played a total of 11 snaps. The coaching staff was impressed with his participation in limited action. Head coach Pete Carroll rewarded Booker for his showing by giving him first-team reps with the defense on Saturday. It's worth noting starting defensive tackle Adam Butler did not practice, according to ESPN's Ryan McFadden. Butler and Jonah Laulu have been working as the starters at defensive tackle in base defense. Laulu struggled versus the Seahawks' first-team offensive line on Thursday, earning an overall grade of 28.7 from Pro Football Focus. For now, Laulu remains the expected starter. But seeing Booker get first-team reps at practice while Butler was sidelined strongly indicates the new acquisition might be the first option off the bench. That puts Booker ahead of the likes of Keondre Coburn and Leki Fotu on the depth chart. Booker is already gaining influence with Carroll and the coaching staff. If Laulu doesn't start performing more admirably, we could see Booker replace him as the first-choice partner next to Butler.

Breaking down Seahawks IOL Jalen Sundell in preseason Week 1
The Seattle Seahawks have been holding a competition at center this offseason. Olu Oluwatimi is the favorite to start, but he's been tasked with fending off competition from sophomore blocker Jalen Sundell. Oluwatimi has been dealing with a back issue as of late, and that's created a new opportunity for Sundell. Oluwatimi missed multiple practices last week. Later in the week, he returned for position drills at a practice, but quickly made his exit. Head coach Mike Macdonald then confirmed Oluwatimi was experiencing some tightness, per Gregg Bell. He missed Thursday's preseason Week 1 tie with the Las Vegas Raiders as a result of the ongoing issue. Sundell received the start with the first-team offense against the Raiders as a result. Sundell totaled 40 snaps against the Raiders, earning an extensive look from offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and the coaching staff. He especially thrived in pass protection, earning a blocking grade of 82.9 from Pro Football Focus. Sundell was whistled for one penalty, but didn't allow any pressures or sacks. PFF claimed he struggled as a run blocker, grading him at 43.5, but that tends to be more subjective than pass protection. Sundell took full advantage of extra reps, and it's imperative Oluwatimi returns to practice sooner rather than later.

Browns waive Luke Floriea among flurry of roster moves after Panthers game
The Cleveland Browns have made a handful of roster moves on the Monday following their first preseason game, a win against the Carolina Panthers. The most notable among the moves made was the waiving of Kent State alum and wide receiver Luke Floriea. The former Golden Flash suffered a hamstring injury in the team's win over the Panthers, and head coach Kevin Stefanski deemed it a "serious" injury. Floriea was waived with an injury designation. The other moves made by the Browns included the waiving of offensive tackle Roy Mbaeteka and the signing of two additional cornerbacks. The Browns have added former fourth round cornerback Darius Rush and Christian Holmes. After waiving Mbaeteka, the team's International Player Pathway representative, the Browns have also designated offensive tackle Killian Zierer as their new IPP representative. The Browns were awarded Zierer off of waivers last week after he was waived by the Atlanta Falcons. Should Floriea clear waivers, however, the Browns could place him on Injured Reserve. However, if Floriea's injury is not a season-ender, the team could also re-sign him to their practice squad once he recovers. This will be a key situation to notice on a young player who stood out in the win over the Panthers.
