CM, Union minister inaugurate exhibition on Emergency at CP
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta and Union housing and urban affairs minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday inaugurated an exhibition at Central Park in Connaught Place, to mark the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Emergency on June 25, 1975. Observed as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas', the exhibition showcased rare and previously unpublished documents, including detention orders of political leaders such as former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former Jan Sangh president Balraj Madhok. Organised by the Delhi government's Archives Department, the exhibition featured official records, press clippings, and photographs from the 21-month Emergency period.
Calling the Emergency the darkest chapter in India's democratic journey, CM Gupta criticised the actions of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government as cruel and dictatorial. 'Lakhs were jailed without cause. There was no appeal, no hearing—only fear,' she said.
She also took aim at the Congress party, accusing its leaders of hypocrisy: 'Today they carry the Constitution in their pockets, yet they were the ones who violated it.'
Gupta concluded with a pledge that India would never again tolerate such authoritarianism, and praised the present government for its commitment to democratic values.
Delhi minister of art and culture Kapil Mishra, was also present at the event, said the documents provided 'clear evidence of the murder of democracy,' and noted this was the first time many had been made public.
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, several cabinet ministers, and senior officials also attended the event.

Exhibition in Thiruvananthapuram sheds light on 50 years of Emergency
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Marking 50 years since the declaration of the Emergency in India, the AKG Centre for Research and Studies organised an exhibition on Tuesday that revisited the dark, silenced chapter in the country's democratic history. Titled 'Emergency: 50 Years Since the Semi-Fascist Regime', the exhibition featured a wide collection of rare newspaper clippings, photographs and archival materials from the 1975-77 period. One of the most striking displays was a newspaper clippings of the blank editorial that was published against censorship imposed on the press. Also on display were political cartoons by R K Laxman and others, who used satire to criticise the regime during a time when free expression was under threat. 'There is a pressing need to hold exhibitions and discussions to remind what led to Emergency, because we are living through what feels like an undeclared Emergency. With laws like the UAPA, frequent ED raids, and increasing interference from the central government, efforts to silence the press, dissent, and public voices are intensifying. The raid on NewsClick and other media outlets are examples,' said C N Mohanan, director of AKG Centre for Research and Studies.

NDMC okays temple upgrade plan, pink toilets
NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council has approved a series of infrastructure proposals aimed at improving civic amenities and women's safety, while also unanimously passing a resolution condemning the 1975 Emergency as a 'dark phase' in India's democratic history. In a meeting chaired by PWD Minister Parvesh Verma, the Council cleared the purchase of five new CNG-powered road-sweeping machines to replace its ageing diesel fleet introduced in 2017-18. NDMC Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal said the Rs 6.69 crore proposal, funded with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) support, aligns with the National Green Tribunal's restrictions on diesel vehicles. The Council also approved the development of 37 pink toilets, one in each NDMC market,with facilities such as sanitary napkin vending machines, baby care spaces, drinking water and women staff for security and sanitation. Chahal said the move aims to create 'a safer and more dignified urban environment for women.' Civic upgrades in Jhuggi clusters and plans to enhance basic services around key temples—including Hanuman Mandir, Birla Mandir also discussed.
