Microsoft cuts thousands of jobs in latest layoff wave amid major AI push & exec shake-up; CCO goes on sabbatical

Time of India02-07-2025
Microsoft has initiated another large-scale workforce reduction, confirming it will lay off more than 9,000 employees globally. This move, which affects nearly 4% of its 228,000-strong global workforce, marks the third major round of job cuts by the company in 2025. The layoffs are part of Microsoft's continuing effort to restructure operations and shift its focus toward artificial intelligence-driven growth.
AI push drives organisational changes
In an official statement, a Microsoft spokesperson said, 'We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace.' The company highlighted that even under favourable market conditions, regular adjustments in staffing have been part of its business strategy. Microsoft has stated that it aims to empower employees by leveraging new technologies that allow them to focus on more meaningful work, indicating a broader integration of AI across all its services and departments.
The latest layoff round follows cuts made earlier this year. In May 2025, Microsoft reduced its workforce by about 6,000 employees, followed by another smaller round weeks later. The current layoffs are expected to primarily affect the sales and marketing departments, although no specific regions were mentioned.
Judson Althoff on sabbatical amid changes
In a related development, Microsoft's Chief Commercial Officer, Judson Althoff, has taken an eight-week sabbatical. The leave, as confirmed by the company, was pre-scheduled and aligns with the end of Microsoft's fiscal year, which closed on June 30, 2025. Althoff is expected to resume his duties in September.
Sorry to hear about the layoffs at over at Microsoft Like the mass layoffs, studios closures and Game Cancellations at PlayStation , Embracer & others these are never good nor should be celebrated or used for Console war.Hopefully everyone lands on their feet soon. pic.twitter.com/8SVBCUuVrS
The timing of the sabbatical has drawn attention within the industry, as it coincides with the period of significant internal restructuring. While Microsoft has not indicated any link between Althoff's absence and the workforce changes, the overlap has prompted speculation among analysts and insiders.
More layoffs may follow in Xbox division
According to an earlier Bloomberg report, Microsoft may also be preparing additional layoffs in its gaming division, particularly within Xbox. If implemented, this would mark the fourth major layoff round at Microsoft in just 18 months, underscoring the scale of internal changes taking place.
Meanwhile, the news of potential job cuts had an immediate, albeit minor, effect on Microsoft's stock performance. On Wednesday, Microsoft's intraday share price slipped by 0.68%, from $493.50 to $490.37. As of 11:00 a.m. EDT, shares were trading at $491.74, slightly down from the previous day's close of $492.05, according to MarketWatch data.

This is the first major server blackout after more than a year, when the whole Xbox Live feature became inaccessible. The proper reason for this server outage hasn't yet been revealed by Xbox yet, but it's good to see that the servers have become live very soon after the outbreaks. Let's explore in detail about this major issue in the Xbox camp. Xbox servers came across with severe outages today Today, on August 14, 2025, many Xbox users have reported that the servers of this popular console had been going through major outages. The majority of the console features which were affected by this outage was associated with Party Management, viewing and sending messages to friends, sending and receiving game invites, and others. The server blackouts even went beyond current gen consoles, affecting the likes of Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Xbox on PC. However, the official Twitter handle of Xbox Support quickly looked into the situation and assured that the engineers were about to fix those issues, and eventually they did fix the server outage issues very soon. The good thing was, playing or streaming multiplayer matches via Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Store purchases were unaffected, so the whole gameplay experience wasn't disrupted at all. Still, many fans were disgusted as today the second weekend of Battlefield 6 open beta kicked off . Report Suggests Apple Could Unveil Tabletop AI Robot Resembling WALL-E by 2027

Apple could be on its way to releasing a novel Apple AI robot that would take the form of a tabletop companion—a clever, emotive assistant akin to WALL-E from the Pixar film. Apple AI device news by Indian Express citing Bloomberg says that the rumored device will be the 'keystone of Apple's AI efforts in the coming years' and will be released by 2027. The new machine is reportedly akin to an iPad secured on a motorized arm capable of pivoting and rotating to follow someone around a room and will have natural language capabilities. In addition, the device will also have a next-generation Siri that can 'join group conversations, and remember things that were said previously.' Apple is said to be working on a face for the Apple WALL-E robot, which could be a sticker of an animated Finder logo, or another lively mascot to embody tabletop AI assistant, and the features it'll receive to make it useful, including a more powerful in-house AI codenamed LLM Siri, run by Apple's own 'Linwood' Apple robotics 2027 with other outside engines like 'Glenwood.' Apple's reported AI push will reportedly also include smart display speakers and smart security cameras with facial recognition, infrared sensors, and controls that can make lights turn on or music play when someone enters a room. The company is also said to be developing similar features and could soon bring them to Apple devices like the Apple Watch. Apple's large language model, internally labelled LLM Siri, is said to be launching some time next spring. The AI-powered Siri will employ an in-house developed technology called Linwood, as well as outside technology called Glenwood. Apple hasn't made a final decision, but it does seem like the tech giant is currently testing Anthropic's Claude.

Apple delays iPad-like smart home hub to 2026 amid Siri AI upgrade challenges

Apple has once again pushed back the release of its long-rumoured smart home hub, now aiming for a mid-2026 launch instead of the earlier 2025 target. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the delay comes down to issues with the Apple Intelligence version of Siri. This enhanced version of the voice assistant is being built on large language models (LLMs) to make it more personal, more context-aware and far more capable. However, the work is taking longer than planned, and several features of the hub depend on Siri being ready. The setback means Apple's entry into the smart home control market will be slower than rivals like Amazon and Google, which already have similar devices in customers' known as the J490, the device is expected to combine a 7-inch display with a speaker, making it look similar to the Google Nest Hub. Gurman says it will have a square shape with slim black or white bezels, rounded corners and a dome-like base. A front-facing camera will recognise people as they approach, allowing the hub to display personalised information for each member of the household. Apple is reportedly building this around a new operating system called Charismatic, designed specifically for shared family use. Its interface will focus on clock faces, widgets for Apple's own apps, and a redesigned virtual presence for Siri, possibly a visual avatar inspired by the Mac Finder device will reportedly run native Apple apps such as Calendar, Music, Notes, Reminders and Camera, but won't have its own App Store. Control will mostly be through voice, although the touchscreen will offer a secondary way to interact. Apple is banking on the LLM-powered Siri to be the centrepiece. This version will be able to use personal data to carry out more complex requests across apps and devices. It was first meant to appear in iOS 18, but now a more complete release is expected in 2025, with a redesigned visual version for iPhones and iPads due in 2026. Gurman reports that Apple is testing both its own AI models and those from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic for Siri, and hasn't yet chosen a final direction. The work on Charismatic and Siri is also laying the groundwork for a separate tabletop robot Apple is rumoured to be working on for 2027. That product could feature a display on a robotic arm capable of tilting and rotating, making it more interactive.- Ends
