Bids to smuggle out cooking oil, petrol foiled

SEMPORNA: Marine police foiled attempts by two speedboats to smuggle out controlled items via Pulau Boheian waters, here, on Tuesday. Sabah (Region Four) Marine Police Commander ACP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim said a team patrolling in the hotspot area spotted two speedboats at 1.10am.
Advertisement 'Both boats were intercepted and 680kg of cooking oil in packets and 2,005 litres of petrol were seized. 'Four foreigners aged between 16 and 38 were detained for attempting to misappropriate the controlled items,' he said. According to Mohd Nazri, the seizures including the assets were worth RM79,260.25 and the case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961. Meanwhile, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt by a pump boat to smuggle out petrol via Pulau Nusa waters. Semporna Maritime Zone Director Maritime Commander Amir Shubli said an MMEA patrol vessel intercepted a suspicious pump boat without registration number. 'Upon realising the presence of law enforcement, the boat's skipper jumped into the water and escaped into a mangrove area to avoid arrest. 'The boat was however detained at 1.40am about 0.2 nautical miles south of Pulau Nusa. 'An inspection on the pump boat discovered 52 jerry cans containing petrol and three pump engines. 'The items were believed to be smuggled out of the country,' he said, adding all the seizures were taken to the Semporna Maritime Zone for further action. Targeted subsidy helps prevent RM40mil diesel loss to smuggling
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has prevented the loss of more than RM40 million in subsidised diesel to smuggling and misappropriation between 2023 and July this year, thanks to the implementation of the targeted diesel subsidy mechanism. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said enforcement data has shown a steady decline in such cases since the mechanism was introduced. In 2023, 992 cases were reported with seizures amounting to RM18.04 million. This dropped to 655 cases in 2024, involving RM17.14 million in seized fuel. Between Jan 1 and July 8 this year, 261 cases were recorded, with seizures valued at RM5.24 million. He said diesel is a scheduled controlled item under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and is subject to strict regulation. "Various measures have been implemented by the ministry to combat smuggling and misappropriation. "These include strengthening governance, maintaining continuous oversight of the sale and distribution of subsidised controlled items, and conducting joint enforcement operations with other agencies at the border, such as the police, the Customs Department, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, and Road Transport Department. "The government's targeted diesel subsidy mechanism has proven effective in addressing issues of misappropriation and smuggling, as evidenced by the declining number of recorded cases," he said.

Eleven Pakistanis held in Semporna immigration raid

SEMPORNA: The Sabah Immigration Department detained 11 Pakistani men during an enforcement operation in Semporna on Wednesday night. The operation, codenamed Ops Sapu, was conducted from 11pm to 3am by the district's Immigration Enforcement Unit with the support of 12 personnel. Sabah Immigration Director Sh Sitti Saleha Habib Yussof said the action followed departmental intelligence and public tip-offs. Of 13 individuals inspected, 11 were arrested under the Immigration Act for lacking valid travel documents or overstaying their permitted duration. Rights groups demand Nepal revoke Telegram ban over freedom concerns
KATHMANDU: Rights groups on Thursday urged Nepal to reverse a ban on the Telegram messaging app, calling the move a serious threat to freedom of expression and digital privacy. The Himalayan nation blocked access to the app on July 18, citing a rise in online fraud and money laundering. 'The government's ban is a serious human rights violation and a discriminatory decision,' said Taranath Dahal of Freedom Forum, a media freedom watchdog. 'This shows the government can ban any platform without transparency, which is extremely concerning.' Freedom Forum was among more than two dozen organisations to release a statement demanding an 'immediate' reversal of the ban. 'The sudden, unlawful disruption has severely impacted journalists, human rights defenders, students, small businesses, and others who depend on the platform for essential day-to-day communication,' said a statement released by #KeepItOn, an international coalition of civil society organisations. Min Prasad Aryal, spokesperson for the Nepal Telecommunication Authority, confirmed the government's directive. 'We asked all internet service providers to block the app after receiving an order from the Prime Minister's Office,' Aryal told AFP. Nepal has restricted access to popular online platforms in the past. In August last year, the government lifted a nine-month ban on TikTok after the platform's South Asia division agreed to comply with Nepali regulations. Telegram, launched in 2013, is a cloud-based messaging app known for its privacy features and support for large group chats and broadcast channels. The app has an estimated billion users worldwide, but faces restrictions in some countries. Telegram's Russian-born founder and chief executive Pavel Durov was briefly detained in France last year and questioned again this week about the platform's alleged complicity in criminal activity. – AFP
