Bids to smuggle out cooking oil, petrol foiled

SEMPORNA: Marine police foiled attempts by two speedboats to smuggle out controlled items via Pulau Boheian waters, here, on Tuesday. Sabah (Region Four) Marine Police Commander ACP Mohd Nazri Ibrahim said a team patrolling in the hotspot area spotted two speedboats at 1.10am.
Advertisement 'Both boats were intercepted and 680kg of cooking oil in packets and 2,005 litres of petrol were seized. 'Four foreigners aged between 16 and 38 were detained for attempting to misappropriate the controlled items,' he said. According to Mohd Nazri, the seizures including the assets were worth RM79,260.25 and the case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961. Meanwhile, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt by a pump boat to smuggle out petrol via Pulau Nusa waters. Semporna Maritime Zone Director Maritime Commander Amir Shubli said an MMEA patrol vessel intercepted a suspicious pump boat without registration number. 'Upon realising the presence of law enforcement, the boat's skipper jumped into the water and escaped into a mangrove area to avoid arrest. 'The boat was however detained at 1.40am about 0.2 nautical miles south of Pulau Nusa. 'An inspection on the pump boat discovered 52 jerry cans containing petrol and three pump engines. 'The items were believed to be smuggled out of the country,' he said, adding all the seizures were taken to the Semporna Maritime Zone for further action. Five held for drugs in Keningau

Keningau District Police Chief Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai said the suspects were detained for various offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Firearms Act 1960. 'One of the suspects was arrested under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1960 after he was found in possession of 1.50 grams of syabu, seven live bullets, and a homemade 'bakakuk' firearm,' he said in a statement. Another man was detained under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act for possessing 0.19 grams of syabu. Meanwhile, three other men tested positive for drug use and are being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act. Superintendent Yampil said police would continue to carry out aggressive operations to curb crime, particularly drug abuse, in the district. Engineer loses RM178,200 in online investment scam
PASIR GUDANG: An engineer lost RM178,200 after falling victim to an online stock investment scam that promised high returns via WhatsApp. Seri Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the 33-year-old female victim lodged a police report yesterday, saying that an investment syndicate had scammed her since March. "The victim was initially attracted after seeing a stock investment advertisement on the Telegram app and followed a provided link. She was promised high profits in a short time. The victim then made 19 transactions into three different bank accounts from March to July, involving a total amount of RM178,200," he said in a statement. Sohaimi added that the victim only realised she had been scammed when she was asked to make additional payments to withdraw her capital and profits. Initial police investigations found that all the bank accounts involved had 21 prior police reports related to investment fraud. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and also involves the use of mule accounts. "The police advise the public not to be easily deceived by any investment schemes that promise high returns. "Always be cautious and verify the legitimacy of any company or individual offering investments before making any payments. "The public should check with the Securities Commission Malaysia, avoid trusting promises of quick riches, and use the Semak Mule portal to verify suspicious accounts before any transactions,".

Couple killed in Kota Belud fire

KOTA BELUD: A married couple was found burnt to death in a house fire at Kampung Sangkir, here, early Thursday. The victims were discovered in the bathroom of the single-storey house, which was completely destroyed. Kota Belud Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Assistant Fire Supt Elge Bakuk, said they received a distress call at 2.52am. 'A team of 10 firefighters, along with one fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit, was dispatched to the scene. 'Upon arrival, the house was already engulfed in flames. A sedan car, believed to be a Proton Saga, was also destroyed in the fire,' he said. After the fire was brought under control at 3.22am, firefighters discovered the charred remains of the husband and wife in the bathroom. Elge said the operation used one water line with two hoses, drawing water from the fire engine. 'The bodies were handed over to the police for further action, including a post-mortem at the Kota Belud Hospital Forensic Unit,' he added. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The operation ended at 4.55am after ensuring the area was safe and free of other hazards.
