ECRL marks another milestone with breakthrough of Genting tunnel

KUALA LUMPUR: The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), a mega rail project in Malaysia being built by the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), marked another key milestone on Saturday with the breakthrough of the 16.39-kilometre Genting Tunnel, Xinhua reported.
The breakthrough represents a significant achievement in itself, situated beneath more than 750 meters of mountainous terrain, the company said in a statement following a ceremony to mark the occasion.
Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, who officiated the ceremony, told a press briefing that the breakthrough also highlights the successful cooperation between the two countries in the field of railway engineering.
"The ECRL is also touted as a 'game changer' for the movement of passengers and freight in Peninsular Malaysia, as this rail infrastructure will link state capitals, major urban centres, industrial hubs, seaports, airports, and tourism zones while interchanging with existing railway lines along the ECRL corridor," he added.
"The Genting Tunnel breakthrough also signals the completion of excavation works for all 41 ECRL tunnels along the 665-km alignment. This major milestone highlights the strong collaboration and dedication among ECRL personnel at all levels in carrying out tunnel excavation works with meticulous planning and robust safety protocols," Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) Chief Executive Officer Darwis Abdul Razak noted.
Located within the Titiwangsa mountain range, the Genting Tunnel was the most technically challenging of the 41 tunnels constructed along the ECRL alignment, being constructed with the use of advanced tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and drill-and-blast techniques in highly complex and varied geological conditions.
Explaining the challenges of working under these conditions and the use of high-technology methods to overcome them, Chen Jianfeng, deputy general manager of CCCC Second Highway Engineering Co., Ltd., told Xinhua that China's TBM technology is among the world's most advanced and well-suited to handle these challenges.
"The Genting Tunnel has highly complex geological conditions, including water ingress, rock bursts, soft surrounding rock, and six fault zones along the alignment. Due to these challenges, we chose the TBM method, which offers greater safety, stability, and efficiency for tunnelling under such difficult conditions," he said.
He also emphasised that the Chinese side has worked well with the Malaysian side to share knowledge and integrate processes, not only by bringing in advanced machinery and expertise but also by incorporating localisation.
"Throughout the construction process in Malaysia, we have placed strong emphasis on localisation while continuously working towards the integration of Chinese and Malaysian standards -- a key focus of our efforts. During the project, we incorporated a wide range of local Malaysian elements and actively nurtured local talent," he said.
"Many Malaysian technical personnel have been sent to China for training. Looking ahead, the ECRL will be operated through a joint China-Malaysia partnership, with both parties working together as part of an integrated operation and maintenance team," he added.
With the completion of all tunnelling works, the ECRL project now moves into its next phase, which includes track installation, electrification, signalling, and communication systems, as well as station interior fit-outs. All works remain on schedule and aligned with the project's master timeline.
The ECRL extends from Malaysia's largest transport hub, Port Klang, and runs across the peninsula to the northeastern Kelantan state. The railway is expected to greatly enhance connectivity and bring more balanced growth to the country by linking its less-developed region on the east coast to the economic heartland on the west coast.

Global merchandise trade surges in Q1, slowdown expected: WTO

GENEVA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Global merchandise trade volume posted strong growth in the first quarter of 2025, but the pace of expansion is expected to slow later in the year, the World Trade Organization (WTO) said on Tuesday. According to the latest data released by the WTO, the volume of world merchandise trade rose by 3.6 percent quarter-on-quarter and 5.3 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, driven largely by a surge in imports in North America in anticipation of higher tariffs in the United States. However, WTO economists expect the growth momentum to ease in the coming months as fully stocked inventories and increased tariffs begin to weigh on import demand. In its Global Trade Outlook and Statistics report released in April, the WTO forecast a 0.2 percent decline in global merchandise trade volume for 2025, warning of serious downside risks stemming from the reintroduction of U.S. "reciprocal tariffs" and spillovers from trade policy uncertainty. Tuesday's data revealed notable regional disparities in trade performance during the first quarter, particularly on the import side. North America recorded the strongest quarter-on-quarter import growth of any region at 13.4 percent, followed by Africa at 5.1 percent, the WTO said. On the export side, the Middle East led with 6.3 percent quarter-on-quarter growth, followed by Asia at 5.6 percent. In terms of product categories, trade in office and telecom equipment posted the highest year-on-year growth at 16 percent, followed by chemicals at 12 percent, and clothing at 7 percent. In contrast, trade in automotive products, fuels and mining products, and iron and steel declined. The WTO also noted signs of a slowdown in import activity in the second quarter. While U.S. imports surged 25 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, growth slowed dramatically to just 1 percent in the first two months of the second quarter.

Ghana sees economic recovery backed by policy coordination: central bank

ACCRA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Asiama said Tuesday that the country's economy has been recovering, thanks to synchronized policy implementation between the central bank and the Ministry of Finance. Asiama said during a business breakfast meeting that the local cedi currency had appreciated by more than 42 percent between January and June, reversing the declines of the previous two years. According to him, gross international reserves stood at 11.1 billion U.S. dollars by the end of June, up from 8.98 billion dollars at the end of 2024, with a trade surplus of 4.14 billion dollars in the first four months of 2025, as exports grew by over 60 percent, mainly from gold, cocoa and crude oil. Moreover, the governor said the West African country's current account surplus improved significantly to 2.12 billion dollars in the first quarter of 2025, compared to just 66 million dollars a year earlier, as remittance inflows remained resilient. The governor said that the outcomes are more than just statistical improvements but mark a restoration of macroeconomic credibility. He added that the outcomes were due to the firm monetary policy stance of the Bank of Ghana, raising and holding the policy rate at 28 percent, complemented by the government's prudent fiscal management. Ghana's three-year reforms, supported by the International Monetary Fund, have passed four successive reviews, with the sovereign credit rating agency Fitch Ratings upgrading the country's long-term foreign-currency issuer default rating to "B-" from "restricted default" in June, following an upgrade by Standard and Poor's from "selective default" to "CCC+" in May.
