Arsenal's Gyokeres Shuts Down Thierry Henry Comparisons; Says 'I Want To Do My Own Thing'
Arsenal's new striker Viktor Gyokeres, 27, aims to carve his own legacy, not overshadow Thierry Henry, after taking the number 14 jersey. He joined from Sporting Lisbon for €63.5M.
Arsenal's newest striker Viktor Gyokeres clarified that he intends to carve out his own place in the club's history, playing down comparisons with Thierry Henry after taking the number 14 jersey with the Gunners.
The 27-year-old Sweden international completed his 63.5 million euros ($72.56 million) switch from Sporting Lisbon on Saturday.
Gyokeres took Arsenal's vacant number 14 shirt, which former captain Henry famously wore on the way to becoming the club's record scorer.
'Of course I know about the history," Gyokeres told British media on Wednesday.
'To be honest, there weren't so many numbers available. There weren't too many to pick from.
'But of course, that one was available. So when I knew that, it was an easy choice to take it."

But the Swede made it very clear that he wasn't looking to oust the legendary Frenchman's legacy but rather find inspiration from the same to help him establish his own.
'It's not really my intention to be compared with what he's achieved in his career. Especially here. I just want to do my own thing and show my qualities. Of course, he was an amazing player, but different from me."
Gyokeres, A Proven Goal Machine
The 27-year-old striker arrives in north London after a sensational season with Sporting Lisbon, where he scored 54 goals across competitions and helped the club to a Portuguese league title.
He made international headlines with a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City and left the Portuguese side this summer with an extraordinary record: 97 goals in 104 appearances.
Alongside Gyökeres, Arsenal have bolstered their squad with several key additions: defender Cristhian Mosquera, midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, and forward Noni Madueke.
The Swede now aims to help end the club's two-decade wait for a league title — a feat last achieved under Arsène Wenger in the 2003/04 season.
Arsenal begin their new Premier League campaign at Old Trafford against Manchester United on August 17.

Mohammed Siraj Reveals Heartwarming Advice From Ravindra Jadeja: 'Remember Your Father...'
Last Updated: Mohammed Siraj, inspired by Ravindra Jadeja's advice, delivered a match-winning performance at Oval, securing India's 2-2 series draw against England. Star India pacer Mohammed Siraj has said that senior pro Ravindra Jadeja asked him to remember his father and pull off a match-winning performance for him at Lord's, and although it was a heartbreak for Siraj after he couldn't help India get over the line, he didn't leave anything to chance at Oval. With four wickets in hand and 35 runs to get, England held the edge before start of play but the gladiator in Siraj made life hell for the opposition batters from ball one. In the end, his effort, complemented quite well by Prasidh Krishna at the other end, left England short by the thinnest of margins and permitted India to sign off 2-2 in the high-pressure five-game rubber. 'I feel amazing because we fought hard from day one till now. My plan was to hit my areas consistently and build pressure. Everything from there was a bonus. When I woke up today, I thought I could do it," Siraj said while speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, having picked up the Player of the Match award. 'I downloaded a picture from Google saying 'believe.' I thought the Brook drop was a game-changing moment. If it had been taken, we might not have come out today. But the way he attacked, hats off to him," Siraj added. The star India pacer, India's stoic warrior in the series, made the old ball talk in his opening over from the pavilion end and got the ball to shape away. Every ball of that Siraj over was an event. 'I always believe in myself, that I can pull off a win from any situation," the star pacer later said of his match-winning performance that fetched him nine wickets in the match, including a five-wicket haul in the all-important second innings. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mohammed Siraj Delivers a Fifer In India's Sensational Comeback Win; India Tie Series 2-2
Last Updated: India clinched a thrilling six-run win over England in the final Test, drawing the series 2-2. Siraj took 5/104, ending the tour with 23 wickets. Mohammed Siraj's warrior spirit led India to a six-run victory over England in the fifth and final Test on Monday, levelling the series 2-2. With four wickets in hand and needing 35 runs, England had the upper hand at the start of play. However, Siraj made life difficult for the opposition batters from the very first ball. In the end, his efforts, well-supported by Prasidh Krishna, narrowly defeated England, allowing India to finish the high-pressure five-match series with a draw. The decision to end play early on day four due to rain was questioned by Stuart Broad and Michael Vaughan, but it was fitting that the series-decider went to the final day with both teams fighting fiercely. Prasidh Krishna, finishing his 23rd over overnight, started with a short ball that Jamie Overton pulled for a four. An inside edge on the next ball meant back-to-back fours, reducing the target to 27 runs. Siraj, India's stoic warrior, made the old ball talk and got it to shape away. Jamie Smith (2) was beaten twice before edging a ball to the keeper, causing Indian fans in the stadium to erupt in unison. Every ball of that Siraj over was eventful. 'I always believe in myself, that I can pull off a win from any situation," Siraj said later of his performance that earned him nine wickets in the game, including a fifer in the crucial second innings. After the breakthrough, a half chance was created against Gus Atkinson, but KL Rahul couldn't take it at second slip. In his next over, Siraj deceived Overton with a nip backer, reviewed by Overton, but clipping the leg-stump. England still needed 20 runs at that point. Prasidh supported Siraj by trapping Josh Tongue in front with a full ball, reducing England to 350 for nine, and drawing a deafening roar from the crowd. Next, Chris Woakes walked in with a broken left arm, prompting everyone in the stadium to stand in respect. This moment of courage was reminiscent of Colin Cowdrey's batting with a broken arm in 1963. With Woakes unable to bat, Atkinson had to use the long handle. He targeted the straight boundary, clearing Akash Deep, who sent the ball over the ropes. The target soon came down to single digits, forcing India to take one final gamble. With the field spread out, Siraj fired a yorker, shattering Atkinson's off-stump and bringing a heart-stopping end to the game. Brief scores: India: 224 and 396 England: 247 and 367 all out in 85.1 overs (Joe Root 105, Harry Brook 111, Ben Duckett 54; Prasidh Krishna 4/126, Mohammed Siraj 5/104).
