He was involved in several bomb blasts in south India and was arrested by the Tamil Nadu's Anti Terrorism Squad from his hideout in Annamayya district, they said.
The police have been searching for Siddique of Nagore for three decades and a reward of Rs 5 lakh was announced for anyone who finds him. Another fugitive Mohammed Ali alias Yunus alias Mansoor of Tirunelveli was also arrested along with the 60-year-old Siddique, police said in a statement here.
"They were involved in multiple bomb blasts and communal murders and have been evading the police dragnet for three decades," the statement said.
They were arrested following a tip-off and with the assistance from the central intelligence agencies that were tracking the terrorists for a long time.
Abubacker was accused in several high-profile terror cases, including the 1995 bomb blast at the office of the Hindu Munnani, Chintadripet, here, parcel bomb explosion that killed T Muthukrishnan, a Hindu right-wing activist in Nagore, the same year, and the 1999 coordinated planting of bombs at the Chennai Police Commissioner's office, Egmore, here, and six other locations including Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore and Kerala.
He was suspected for his role in the 2011 pipe-bomb planting attempt in Madurai during the rath yatra of Advani, the 2012 murder of Dr Arvind Reddy in Vellore, and the 2013 bomb blast near the BJP office at Malleswaram in Bengaluru, police said.
Mohammed Ali, his associate, has been on the run for 26 years, and was said to be involved in the 1999 multiple bomb planting in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Both would be produced before a judicial magistrate and remanded, police said.

Raj & Uddhav ‘hosts' of July 5 rally, says MNS on poster

Mumbai: The MNS on Tuesday released a poster with names of both Uddhav and Raj Thackeray as hosts of the July 5 "victory rally" to be held at the NSCI Dome in Worli to celebrate the scrapping of the government resolutions (GRs) making Hindi the third language to be taught in state schools from Class 1. This is the first time the MNS has named Uddhav on its poster, making it official that Uddhav and Raj will share the stage at the rally. The poster with their names led to talk that an alliance between the two Thackeray cousins was a real possibility ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls and not merely a question of speculation. The poster which was released by MNS on X read, "The voice of Marathi! Marathi mothers, sisters and brothers, did you make the govt bow down? Yes, you made them bow down! If anyone made them bow down, it was you, the Marathi people! We were only fighting on your behalf. So, even while celebrating this joy, we are only the organizers of this gathering, the rest of the celebration is up to you. Come celebrating, bursting with joy!! We are waiting! "I have discussed with MNS chief Raj Thackeray and our party chief Uddhav Thackeray. We have decided to hold the rally at NSCI Dome. Sena (UBT) had earlier chosen Shivaji Park. We have submitted a request to the BMC for this. However, I do not think this govt will allow us to hold a victory rally at Shivaji Park. Therefore, Raj Thackeray suggested the option of the Dome, which everyone has agreed to," he said. Raut also said the BJP-led Mahayuti govt should stop misleading people of the state, referring to CM Devendra Fadnavis' claim that Uddhav Thackeray had as CM accepted recommendations of the Dr Raghunath Mashelkar committee to introduce a three-language policy from Class 1 and set up a committee on the policy's implementation. Functionaries from Sena (UBT) like MP Arvind Sawant, MLC Anil Parab and MLA Varun Sardesai and MNS functionaries Nitin Sardesai, Sandeep Deshpande and Bala Nandgaonkar are in talks. Air India flags fake X handles offering ‘help' to crash victims' kin

Air India is fighting two battles in the wake of the AI-171 crash: one with grief, and another with fraud. As it tries to help families of the 260 people who lost their lives lost in the June 12 tragedy, Air India reported a series of fake handles cropping up on X (formerly Twitter), masquerading as official support accounts offering "help" to the families of victims. "We have flagged multiple handles that pretended to offer assistance. We don't want anyone to fall prey to fraudsters at such a vulnerable time," said a source familiar with the matter. The deceit is not limited to social media. The airline's dedicated helplines, set up for grieving families and survivors, have received a staggering number of calls. While some heartbreaking, others bizarre. Another wanted reimbursement for "precious jewellery" allegedly in a relative's luggage. One even asked for free international tickets for their entire family this winter, claiming to be a distant relative of a victim. "Amid the massive outpouring of grief in the aftermath of India's worst air disaster in recent memory, a few individuals have been trying to use this situation to make a quick buck. It is painful to see some people, claiming to be related to the passengers, trying to take advantage of the situation," the source said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3 & 4 BHKs near ITPL from ₹2.7 Cr* Sumadhura Group Learn More Undo Air India had set up two 24/7 helpline numbers to handle inquiries and provide support. On Day 1 alone, the helplines received more than 10,000 calls, many from inconsolable family members. "The volume was overwhelming, but it wasn't just that. The emotional trauma of listening to the raw grief of callers broke down many of our call centre staff. Some fainted, others needed counselling or medical help," the source said. Air India did not respond to queries sent by TOI. In the days following the crash, Air India announced an interim compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the families of each of the deceased and to the lone survivor to address immediate financial needs. These payments began rolling out from June 20. Tata Sons, the airline's parent company, announced an additional compensation of Rs 1 crore for the next of kin of each victim. To ensure transparent and long-term support, a dedicated trust with a corpus of Rs 500 crore is being set up. Support on the ground has also come from a massive network of volunteers. More than 500 staff from Air India and 17 other Tata Group companies were deployed in Ahmedabad, each bereaved family was assigned a dedicated caregiver trained to assist with grief management, logistics, and support. Cheema defends Punjab's Rs 8,500cr loan plan, cites legacy debt & RBI limits

1 2 Chandigarh: Reacting to criticism of the AAP govt by the opposition for its plans to raise a loan of Rs 8,500 crore in the second quarter from July to September, finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Tuesday said that the state govt planned to borrow funds to meet the redemption obligations of over Rs 3,500 crore for legacy debt. He added that the loan was within the borrowing limits sanctioned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the projections made in the state budget 2025-26. "The opposition party leaders don't understand economics. Even their household budgets are made by their wives. From the US to our neighbouring Haryana, state economies borrow funds. However, it is being done within the prescribed limits and continuous attempts are being made to bring down the outstanding debt. The RBI has now allowed us to raise loans over the next three months," said Cheema, on the sidelines of a press conference on growth in goods and sales tax (GST) collections. "I had given the quarterly projections of the state's borrowings in the budget presented in March. The entire details were shared in the vidhan sabha. The AAP govt has improved its financial health and that is why the RBI has been approving the borrowing limits well in advance," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Here's The Average Price of a 6-Hour Gutter Guards Upgrade Read More Undo The market borrowings to be undertaken by the state govt have been approved by the RBI. The cash-strapped govt would raise a loan of Rs 2,000 crore in July, Rs 3,000 crore in Aug, and Rs 3,500 crore in Sept. Replying to a media query, Cheema said that the state has to make interest payments of Rs 25,000 crore and principal payments of Rs 18,200 crore on legacy debt availed by the previous SAD-BJP and Congress regimes in FY 2025-26, while planning to borrow Rs 49,900 crore, despite Rs 13,000 crore in deductions by the Centre. He added that the state govt planned to borrow Rs 8,500 crore to meet the redemption obligations of over Rs 3,500 crore for legacy debt in the second quarter of the current financial year alone. "Punjab's fiscal management is on a strong footing, with the state govt taking proactive steps to manage its debt obligations. He highlighted that the Punjab govt recently invested Rs 1,000 crore each in the guarantee redemption fund (GRF) and consolidated sinking fund (CSF), with the latter now exceeding Rs 10,000 crore, a significant increase from Rs 3,000 crore when the current government took office," he added.
