Rahul admits 'shortcomings' in protecting OBC interests, vows course correction amid caste census push
Gandhi further said he committed a "mistake" in his political career of 21 years, which is not protecting the interests of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) section as much as he should have done.
Addressing the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan' of OBCs at the Talkatora Stadium here, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said the caste census in Telangana is a "political earthquake" that will cause a huge "aftershock" in the country.
"I have been doing politics since 2004, it has been 21 years, and when I look back and do a self-analysis, where all I did the right thing and where I fell short. I see two-three big issues -- land acquisition bill, MGNREGA, food bill, fight for tribals, I did these things wrong," Gandhi said.
"When it comes to Dalits, tribals and minorities, I should get good marks. On women's issues, I should get good marks... But when I look back, I can see clearly that in one thing I was lacking, I committed one mistake -- I did not protect the OBC section the way I should have," he said.

Monsoon session: BJP to raise BBMP split, tunnel road plans in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: BJP has stepped up its opposition to the proposed tunnel road project and the plan to divide BBMP into five municipal corporations. Party MLAs from Bengaluru met in the city Saturday to chalk out a strategy and announced plans to raise both issues in the upcoming legislature session. The meeting was chaired by the opposition leader in the legislative assembly, R Ashoka, and BJP state president BY Vijayendra. Speaking to reporters, Ashoka accused the Congress govt of pursuing the BBMP split for electoral gains. "The division of BBMP is being carried out solely to ensure the Congress party's electoral victory and not for the city's development. We are opposing the plan to divide Bengaluru into five corporations. This is harmful to the interests of the city. In the future, one corporation may end up fighting with another," he said. "We don't object to the concept of a tunnel road. But they have allowed a dubious company to prepare the DPR. The company was caught copying details from another project and fined Rs 15 lakh. After this, the company should have been blacklisted, not given further responsibility worth Rs 7-8 crore." He warned, "Metro is already being constructed underground in Bengaluru. If a tunnel road is built beneath it, it could compromise safety." Echoing Ashoka's views, Vijayendra said, "Projects like the underground tunnel road and the division of BBMP into five are not in the best interest of the city. Similar experiments in cities like Mumbai have failed. BJP will continue to oppose it." He also highlighted concerns over housing approvals. Lucknow: A day after the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said at a programme in Delhi that the Congress fell short of understanding issues faced by OBCs, which made space for BJP, BSP national president Mayawati likened it to shedding "crocodile tears". In a long post on X, she said, "The admission by the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha that the Congress Party was not true and trustworthy in matters of political and economic hopes, aspirations, and getting reservation and constitutional rights for the people of the country's huge population of Other Backward Classes (OBC) is not a new thing, rather it seems more like selfish politics of saying what it does not mean."
