Malaysia to host Thailand-Cambodia border talks in Kuala Lumpur
The session aims to resolve ongoing border conflicts under a ceasefire agreement mediated by Malaysia on July 28.
A statement from the Defence Intelligence and Strategic Communications Division confirmed Malaysia's role as a neutral venue for the talks.
'The Terms of Reference for deploying Defence Attachés and an ASEAN Monitoring Group will be key agenda items,' it said.
The ceasefire, enforced since July 28, followed negotiations led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai agreed to de-escalate tensions after a fatal clash near Preah Vihear in May.
The 817-kilometre undemarcated border has been a persistent diplomatic challenge between the two nations. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: The United States has described Malaysia's role as Asean chair as vital in helping ease tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan said Malaysia's leadership was evident in the successful hosting of today's Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting, which brought the concerned parties together. "This is yet another example of the important role played by Malaysia as Asean chair in facilitating engagement between both sides. Kagan also gave assurance that the US would continue working closely with Malaysia in its role as Asean chair, as well as with other member states, to ensure the regional bloc plays an effective role in uniting the two countries. He said that while the ceasefire agreement marked a significant milestone, it was only the beginning of a longer process. "The ultimate goal is to reach a sustainable and lasting ceasefire, accepted and enforced by both sides. "The mechanism currently in place is crucial in ensuring that the monitoring process is smooth, transparent and effective. "More importantly, we believe what has happened reflects a genuine commitment from both governments, and the US will closely monitor this to ensure that commitment is sustained," he said. Kagan added that President Donald Trump placed the highest priority on the Thai-Cambodian conflict, believing that any form of war or confrontation would benefit no party. Malaysia, the US, and China were observers at today's Extraordinary GBC Meeting.

Malaysia to host GBC meeting in September on Thai-Cambodian ceasefire progress
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has agreed to convene the next General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in September to assess the progress of the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia. The meeting is expected to be held within a month, in September. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Malaysia believes the current bilateral mechanism used to resolve the conflict between the two countries is sufficient for the time being. "Everyone agrees that the bilateral mechanism currently in place is sufficient for now, while we also agree that there will be a next round at the level of the GBC meeting. "We are proud to play a role in this peace effort and appreciate the commitment and willingness of both countries' leaders," he said at a press conference today. The press conference followed the GBC meeting between Cambodian and Thai military leaders, after a series of joint working group sessions since Monday at Wisma Perwira. Among those present were Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and Thailand's acting Defence Minister General Nattaphon Narkphanit. Also present were Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari, Defence Ministry secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali and Malaysian Armed Forces chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar. Saifuddin said Malaysia remains steadfast in providing the necessary support to both countries as a facilitator of dialogue, confidence-building, and practical mechanisms for ceasefire monitoring. He said Asean believes in resolving disputes through consensus, not confrontation, and based on trust, mutual respect, and the principle of non-interference. He said Cambodia and Thailand's commitment to implementing the ceasefire was a significant step that reflects the Asean spirit in resolving conflicts through dialogue and mutual understanding. "This is how we strengthen regional unity. It is this Asean spirit that guides us today and will continue to guide us in the future. "Today's discussions reflect the shared understanding that the ceasefire is not temporary, but a promise to protect lives, uphold dignity, and prevent further suffering," he said. He said the promise must be honoured through commitment, effective monitoring, and genuine political will from both sides.
