Ludhiana: 4th member of train theft gang arrested, iPhone recovered
The Government Railway Police has recovered an Iphone 16 from the fourth member of an inter-state gang of thieves busted last week for stealing gold jewellery and valuables from train passengers.
The fourth member identified as Balbir Singh (52) of the gang surrendered at the Government Railway Police (GRP) station on June 12 after the police nabbed the other three members and increased pressure on him by raiding his home in Haryana's Jind district.
'He surrendered after we pressured him through our raids. He informed us about the phone and we recovered it from his village, Lochab in Jind,' said inspector Palwinder Singh, incharge GRP Ludhiana.
On June 7 the GRP had arrested three members in the theft case, where a family was robbed of gold jewellery worth ₹23 lakh and a brand-new iPhone while returning from a wedding on May 30.
The complaint was filed by Arpana, a resident of Ludhiana. She informed police that her family, including her son and newly-wed daughter-in-law, had boarded a train from their village in Bihar to Ludhiana after attending a wedding. During the journey, unknown miscreants stole a bag containing gold jewellery and an Iphone.
The GRP on June 11 had recovered gold worth ₹8 lakh after interrogation of the three members arrested earlier.
Inspector Palwinder said that Balbir has revealed that the rest of the gold was with a gold smith, who is a contact of one of the thieves arrested earlier. 'Those three are now in judicial custody. We will seek their remand and try to recover the remaining gold as well,' added the Inspector.

ATVM operator held at Varanasi Cantt for selling overpriced train tickets
The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested an Automatic Ticket Vending Machine (ATVM) operator at Cantt Railway Station in Varanasi on Wednesday evening for allegedly selling overpriced general category travel tickets. According to GRP officials, the matter came to light after two passengers filed a complaint. According to GRP inspector Rajol Nagar, the accused has been identified as Brijesh Srivastava. The matter came to light when two passengers lodged a video complaint, alleging that ₹2200 had been charged for 6 general tickets to Mumbai, said a GRP officer. Following the complaint, the GRP launched an inquiry, during which officials from the commercial department questioned the accused and conducted a detailed investigation. The probe confirmed the involvement of the ATVM operator, the officer added. Following the investigation, chief booking supervisor JP Mishra filed a formal complaint at the GRP police station at Cantt. Based on his complaint, a case was registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Inspector Nagar stated that the investigation revealed the accused, Brijesh, had been selling overpriced tickets for the Mahanagari Express and other shuttle trains to passengers. It was also discovered during the probe that similar overpriced tickets had been detected earlier at Jabalpur and Chheoki stations. The investigation of CCTV footage revealed that the accused, Brijesh, used to sell overpriced tickets to passengers near ATVM number 11, located in the New Building on the station premises, said the GRP inspector. He said that further investigation is underway. At present, a total of 16 automatic ticket vending machines are working at Cantt station. After the incident came to light, the railway administration started intensive monitoring of the activity and operation of all the ATVM machines.

Nashik Road railway police arrest four involved in stealing mobile phones
Nashik: The Nashik Road Government Railway Police (GRP), in a joint operation with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), have arrested four individuals accused of stealing mobile phones from train passengers. The authorities have recovered stolen mobile phones valued at Rs1.5 lakh from the suspects. The arrests followed an increase in passenger complaints regarding mobile phone thefts on trains between Mumbai and Bhusawal. A GRP official said, "On Tuesday, two railway passengers registered a complaint about their mobile phones being stolen during their travel from Mumbai to Bhusawal. Based on this information, the GRP and RPF took action to track them down with the help of CCTV footage at the railway station. " The official added, "We tracked the suspects to platform 4. The police approached them and inquired about them being present at the station. Since they could not provide satisfactory answers, they were taken to the police station where they were asked about their whereabouts and purpose of visiting Nashik." The suspects have been identified as Jassim Salim Sheikh, Rahul Shimpi and Abdul Latif Halim Khan — all residents of Thane district. "Five stolen mobile phones valued at Rs80,000 were recovered from them," the official said. A fourth suspect, who was trying to sell a stolen mobile phone, was also arrested on Monday. He has been identified as Sunil Ambhore, a resident of Washim.

Ludhiana influencer's murder: Two accused sent to 14-day judicial remand
A district court on Wednesday sent two accused, Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, nominated in the murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari alias Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, to 14-day judicial remand. The accused, Nihangs, were produced in the court amid tight security. The two associates of the alleged mastermind in the crime, Amritpal Singh Mehron, were arrested by the Bathinda police on June 13. A local court granted their police custody for five days for questioning. Police said that Kanchan was killed by the three due to 'unauthorised moral policing' as the accused claimed that digital content created by the deceased was immoral and hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. Bathinda senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amneet Kondal said on Wednesday that the district police would soon submit a report to the Bureau of Investigation (BoI) to process it further to Mehron's extradition from the UAE to face trial in the murder case. 'It is a complicated process, and we are still in the process of completing the required documents,' she said. The SSP said that two mobile phones of the deceased, including an iPhone, and the passwords of the handsets were forcibly taken away from Kanchan before she was strangled. 'During the custodial interrogation, Jaspreet and Nimratjit feigned ignorance and we suspect that the two phones of the deceased are still in Mehron's possession,' she added. Meanwhile, Bathinda-based lawyer Harpal Singh Khara, who is representing the arrested duo in the court, told reporters that video showing Mehron claiming responsibility for the murder could have been generated using artificial intelligence (AI). 'We suspect a conspiracy by agencies behind it. Mehron's family has approached me to represent him in the court,' said Khara, who was accompanied by Mehron's father Baljinder Singh. Mehron, also a Nihang, flew to the UAE within hours of the murder of Kanchan on the intervening night of June 9-10. As per the Bathinda police, Mehron boarded a UAE-bound flight from Amritsar airport at 9.15 am on June 10. The police learnt about the escape of Mehron after a lookout circular (LOC) was issued against him on June 14. Kanchan's decomposed body was found by the police on the evening of June 11 after a few people spotted a foul was emanating from the vehicle abandoned at the parking of Adesh medical college and hospital at Bhucho town.
