Ludhiana: 4th member of train theft gang arrested, iPhone recovered
The fourth member identified as Balbir Singh (52) of the gang surrendered at the Government Railway Police (GRP) station on June 12 after the police nabbed the other three members and increased pressure on him by raiding his home in Haryana's Jind district.
'He surrendered after we pressured him through our raids. He informed us about the phone and we recovered it from his village, Lochab in Jind,' said inspector Palwinder Singh, incharge GRP Ludhiana.
On June 7 the GRP had arrested three members in the theft case, where a family was robbed of gold jewellery worth ₹23 lakh and a brand-new iPhone while returning from a wedding on May 30.
The complaint was filed by Arpana, a resident of Ludhiana. She informed police that her family, including her son and newly-wed daughter-in-law, had boarded a train from their village in Bihar to Ludhiana after attending a wedding. During the journey, unknown miscreants stole a bag containing gold jewellery and an Iphone.
The GRP on June 11 had recovered gold worth ₹8 lakh after interrogation of the three members arrested earlier.
Inspector Palwinder said that Balbir has revealed that the rest of the gold was with a gold smith, who is a contact of one of the thieves arrested earlier. 'Those three are now in judicial custody. We will seek their remand and try to recover the remaining gold as well,' added the Inspector.

RPF deploy teams for women safety
Mangaluru: The Palakkad division of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has deployed teams at five major stations under the "Meri Saheli" initiative, to enhance the safety and security of women passengers, especially those travelling alone. The teams identify women travelling alone, sensitise about safety precautions, and provide contact information such as the Rail Madad helpline (139) and digital grievance platforms like Instagram and CPGRAMS for immediate assistance in case of distress. Passenger feedbacks are also collected to improve the programme. A total of 64 women RPF personnel were selected for this mission. On average, 11 women RPF staff attend designated trains every day and interact with around 230 solo women passengers. In 2025, the initiative benefitted 37,276 women travellers, receiving positive public responses. All major night trains are now being escorted by male and female RPF personnel, ensuring a secure travel environment for women. They are equipped with body-worn cameras for greater transparency and accountability. Daily joint patrols by the RPF and GRP are deployed during peak hours to curb nuisance at the stations. Surprise checks in ladies' coaches have also been intensified. In 2025 alone, 971 offenders were apprehended, including trespassers, unauthorised passengers in reserved coaches, and male passengers in ladies' compartments. The Rail Madad helpline (139) has been widely publicised to ensure passengers receive timely assistance. During 2025, 38 complaints were registered through Rail Madad and other online platforms, all of which were promptly resolved. GRP suspends 3 railway cops booked for ‘extorting Rs 30,000' from Rajasthan man
The Government Railway Police (GRP) suspended three police personnel who were booked for allegedly extorting Rs 30,000 from a Rajasthan man at Mumbai Central railway station. While two of them were identified based on CCTV cameras, a third was identified on the basis of their questioning. No arrests have been made in the case as yet. A senior official on Tuesday confirmed that three GRP personnel were suspended after they were identified as the persons responsible for threatening and extorting a Rajasthan resident and his daughter. Sources said that the GRP brass was also informed about two rooms at Mumbai Central railway station platform number 5 that were allegedly used by the accused for extorting passengers. The two rooms do not have CCTV cameras. 'The allegations are being verified and CCTV cameras may be put up at these rooms to prevent their misuse,' a senior official said. The official said that the probe into the extortion FIR has been handed over to the crime branch which is in the process of recording the statement of the trio. 'We have asked the complainant in the case to come to the city to record his detailed statement in the matter,' a crime branch official said. The alleged incident took place on August 10 in Mumbai when the man and his daughter had come to the Mumbai Central railway station to take a train for Rajasthan around 10.30pm. Two GRP constables allegedly started checking their bags and during the search, they found a gold piece weighing 14 grams that was wrapped inside a paper and Rs 31,900. They took the man to the office of who they claimed was a senior officer. The complainant alleged he was threatened that he would be beaten up and kept in the prison all night and the gold would be seized by the magistrate. Scared, he said, he allowed the three men in khaki to take Rs 30,000 and took a train for Rajasthan. On reaching there, he filed a complaint at the local Ratangadh police station in Rajasthan. Since the incident had taken place in Mumbai, the FIR was transferred to the Mumbai GRP. A senior official said that three who have been suspended include an Assistant Sub Inspector and two constables. The three have been absconding and the police are looking for them, the official said. The official added that four others from GRP who were also suspected to be linked to the incident have been transferred.

Rly cops suspended for assaulting, robbing jeweller at Mum Central stn; suspended
Mumbai: Three men who assaulted and threatened a Rajasthan-based jeweller and extorted money from him at Mumbai Central Terminus recently have been identified as personnel from Govt Railway Police (GRP). They have been placed under suspension. The trio, assistant sub inspector Rathod, head constable Jagtap and head constable Bhosle, will be arrested soon. Four other policemen present during the incident have been transferred. The action was taken by GRP commissioner M Rakesh Kalasagar a day after media reports of the incident. "We are taking up this issue very seriously," said Kalasagar. The jeweller and his eight-year-old daughter had come down to his sister's place in Mumbai for Raksha Bandhan. They had booked return tickets for Rajasthan on Duranto Express on Aug 10. The jeweller's brother-in-law accompanied them to the Terminus to bid farewell. A 'senior' was seated in the room which was later identified as a beat chowky. The jeweller was threatened that he would be locked up overnight if he did not surrender the gold. He was abused and slapped twice. His daughter started to cry. The men threatened to produce the gold before a magistrate and asked him to arrange for a copy of his Aadhaar card over the phone. They also forced the jeweller to sign some blank sheets of paper. Around 10.55 pm, about five minutes before his train was to leave, the men returned his gold but kept his money. The jeweller pleaded that he would need cash for expenses during the journey. At this, the men returned Rs 1,900 and asked him to run if he still wanted to get into the train on time. "Based on CCTV footage, we identified the three policemen and placed them under suspension. Four other cops were present at the location but their involvement has not been confirmed.
