Ramon Ang to help solve metro's flooding woes at 'no cost to the gov't'

San Miguel Corporation (SMC) president and CEO Ramon Ang on Friday volunteered to help solve the flooding problems in Metro Manila "at no cost to the government."
In a press conference with concerned government officials, Ang vowed to work on flood mitigation projects, including the construction of drainage systems and clearing operations, as well as housing and school-building programs.
'Ako po San Miguel, Ramon Ang, nagvo-volunteer ako ngayon. Ako na ang tutulong sa buong Metro Manila ma-solve ang baha at no cost to the people at no cost to the government,' Ang said.
(I, San Miguel, Ramon Ang, am volunteering now. I will help the entire Metro Manila solve the flooding at no cost to the people and no cost to the government.)
This comes weeks after Ang's firm was being blamed for the flooding in some areas where they have ongoing projects.
'Kasalanan ba namin 'yun? Hindi. Wala nang turuan. Pinalitan namin lahat ng kanal. Kami ang gumawa noon,' Ang said.
(Was that our fault? No. Let's stop pointing fingers. We replaced all the gutters. We were the ones who solved that.)
In July, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) called out the MRT Line 7 project contractors and the Skyway management, both under SMC, over issues that allegedly contribute to the flooding in their concerned areas.
SMC said its MRT-7 Project Management Office has clarified its facilities near Batasan Station on Commonwealth Avenue 'are not the cause of the flooding.'
'All MRT-7 structures in the area, including columns and footings, were built outside existing drainage lines and do not obstruct the natural flow of water. These were constructed with full consideration of the drainage layout and in compliance with approved engineering plans,' SMC said.
'Concerns that were raised about a manhole constructed along the drainage line have also been reviewed. Based on design, simulation, and on-site inspection, the manhole does not interfere with water flow inside the pipe culverts,' it added. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

SG aircraft repair provider SIA Engineering to operate in NAIA

Singaporean aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) provider SIA Engineering Company Limited (SIAEC) is setting up shop at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), expanding its presence in the country through its local unit SIA Engineering (Philippines) Corporation (SIAEP). In a statement, NAIA operator San Miguel-backed New NAIA Infra Corporation (NNIC) announced that SIAEP, which is already operating in Clark, will begin MRO service operations at NAIA by September. SIAEP's parent SIAC is majority owned by Singapore Airlines Group. NNIC said SIAEP's decision to expand to the country's main gateway 'reflects growing confidence in the airport's ongoing improvements and its potential to become a stronger hub for aviation services.' The San Miguel-led airport operator said SIAEP's entry into NAIA is seen to benefit not only local carriers, but the broader aviation industry as it opens up more opportunities for skills development, knowledge transfer, and jobs in aircraft maintenance. 'This is a big boost for NAIA and for Philippine aviation. We welcome SIAEP and look forward to working closely with them to improve support for airlines operating here,' said Ramon Ang, president and CEO of NNIC. The presence of SIAEP at NAIA will help provide faster aircraft turnaround and improved technical support, benefitting both airlines and passengers, according to NNIC. The NAIA operator added that major MRO companies have also expressed interest in establishing a presence at NAIA. With more players coming in, airlines will have more choices, leading to better service options and greater overall efficiency. 'This is part of our broader push to raise NAIA's standards and make it a better, more reliable gateway not only for travelers, but for the aviation industry as a whole,' added Ang. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Petron nets P5.3B in H1 2025

Petron Corp. on Tuesday reported a decline in first-half net income, as the Ang-led fuel retailer reported a double-digit decline in its revenues during the period on the back of lower international oil prices and decreased volumes from trading operations in Singapore. Petron reported a P5.3-billion net income in the first half of the year, down from P6.023 billion in the comparable period of 2024. Overall sales declined by 13% to P386.4 billion, as the consolidated sales volume was dragged by transactions in Singapore to 64.2 million barrels. The combined sales volume from the Philippines and Malaysia climbed 3% to 56.2 million barrels. 'Our results continue to reflect our resilience in overcoming market challenges, while highlighting the strength of the Petron brand across different customers and industries,' Petron Corp. president and chief executive officer Ramon Ang said in an emailed statement. 'We remain confident in our ability to drive growth as we further enhance our operations towards greater efficiency and sustainability,' he added. The company raised P32 billion from its latest fixed-rate bond offering, with its P25-billion base offer 1.3 times oversubscribed leading to a P7-billion oversubscription. Proceeds will be used for the redemption of its Series D and E bonds, and funding for general corporate purposes. Shares in Petron closed Tuesday at P2.48 apiece, unchanged from Monday's finish. –VAL, GMA Integrated News
