Shreyas Iyer Set To Be Ignored For Asia Cup? 'India To Persist With...'
India's white-ball specialists will return to action next month with the Asia Cup in UAE. Speculations are rife over the squad composition with the continental tournament set to be played in T20 format. Given the recent form of the likes of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer, there have been conflicting reports about the trio being either ignored or selected for the competition.
As per a latest report, the selection committee is unlikely to consider either of the three for the Asia Cup that starts from September 9. The team management is aiming to stick with the tried and tested combination meaning there's little room for Gill, Jaiswal and Iyer to be included.
While Suryakumar Yadav has been leading the T20I team for some time now, it has been widely reported that thanks to the success Shubman Gill had on England tour, he has become a strong candidate to take over the reins in the shortest format as well.
'…with India looking to persist with the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, Gill is currently struggling to even make it to the side," The Times of India quoted a source as saying.
Despite their productive outings in IPL 2025, neither Jaiswal nor Iyer will be part of the Asia Cup squad.
'Even Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had a great series in England, and middle-order bat Shreyas Iyer are likely not to be picked for the T20 side. Jaiswal has been told by the selectors to focus on red-ball cricket," the source claimed.

India won all nine league matches and the semifinal against New Zealand in Mumbai on November 15, 2023, to book a place in the summit clash, but in the title decider, they went down by six wickets against the Pat Cummins-led Australian team. In the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit scored a total of 597 runs to finish as the second-highest run getter. His batting average in the 2023 World Cup was 54.27, and he scored runs with a strike rate of 125.94. In the 2019 ODI World Cup, Rohit, with the help of five centuries and one fifty, scored 648 runs. But India failed to qualify for the final under Virat Kohli's leadership. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 selection will be one of the toughest in recent times, given the depth of talent at the Indian cricket circuit. "The depth of talent is so immense that even if you are a Test captain (Shubman Gill) and have shattered a lot of records, you are not a certainty in a different format. This is going to be a tough selection. We have won 17 out of the last 20 T20 matches we played," Chopra told ANI. When asked about pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, Chopra praised him. So, the attempt is to go in that direction, talk about stories that have inspired a generation, but now go a little deeper, delve a little deeper," Chopra said. West Indies women cricketers undergo two-week training camp at CSK Academy
Chennai, Aug 18 (PTI) Fifteen of the most promising West Indian women cricketers, under head coach Merissa Aguilleira, have assembled at the Chennai Super Kings Academy here for a specialised training camp as part of Cricket West Indies' (CWI) ongoing India development programme. Apart from Aguilleira, the squad is accompanied by assistant coaches Ryan Hinds and Tremayne Smartt and team manager Yasmine St Ange. The contingent left Barbados for India on August 12 for the two-week programme, which runs from August 13 to 30. During this period, the players will feature in a series of practice matches and skill-specific sessions aimed at improving their performance against spin in overseas conditions, with a focus on technical refinement, mental conditioning and cultural adaptation. The players will also work with the same world-class coaching staff that oversaw the men's training camp last December, including Academy Director Sriram Krishnamurthy and his team of specialists, while benefitting from Chennai's renowned facilities. 'Following the tremendous success of our male players' training camp in December, we are proud to now extend this opportunity to our most promising female cricketers," Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe said in a release. 'The Super Kings Academy in Chennai offers a world-class training environment that allows our players to experience cricket in a different part of the world." The 15-member group includes senior internationals Ashmini Munisar, Zaida James, Djenaba Joseph, Jahzara Claxton, Jannillea Glasgow, Realeanna Grimmond, Trishan Holder, Mandy Mangru and Nerissa Crafton.
