Bihar elections: PM Narendra Modi has already addressed massive gatherings in three divisions — Madhubani, Bikramganj and Siwan
In the run-up to the crucial Bihar assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to intensify the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) campaign across the state by holding rallies in all nine administrative divisions.
The move comes as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance's broader strategy to ensure comprehensive outreach and mobilisation in every corner of Bihar.
So far, PM Modi has already addressed massive gatherings in three divisions — Madhubani, Bikramganj and Siwan. These rallies have seen an enthusiastic response from the public, with the Prime Minister laying out his government's achievements and future roadmap for Bihar.
The campaign timeline is expected to stretch from July 15 to September 15, covering a critical two-month window ahead of the expected election announcement. During this period, the NDA aims to hold public meetings and rallies across all assembly constituencies in Bihar.
Party leaders say this will mark the most extensive political outreach programme in the state so far, with not just the Prime Minister but also top NDA leaders from both national and state levels participating in the campaign blitz.
PREP IS ON
Before launching this division-wise campaign, the NDA has already conducted preparatory meetings at the district and block levels, signalling a bottom-up approach to organisation and voter engagement.
By planning one rally in each of the state's nine divisions, the NDA hopes to create a ripple effect across Bihar's political landscape, ensuring that no region feels left out — and that every voter hears the alliance's message loud and clear.
Although the seat distribution is yet to happen between all the alliance partners. It is learnt that the JDU will contest the maximum number of seats followed by the BJP and then followed by smaller alliances like LJP, HAM and Upendra Kushwaha's party. A lion's share of the 243 seats in the assembly is expected to go to the big two alliances.
Currently, a couple of rounds of meeting have taken place at the state level of the alliance partners with the focus being on winnability as the biggest criteria to award seats to anybody. For now, the BJP has done an assessment and a survey of all the 243 seats in this state. The saffron party, which has led the alliance talks, has narrowed down on the caste combination, which will be appropriate for every seat in this state.
On the other hand, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also expected to hold smaller meetings with the ground workers in groups, the way it was done during the Maharashtra elections using his tried and tested formula of booth empowerment.
With the clock ticking toward election season, the BJP-led alliance appears focused, aggressive, and determined to consolidate its position in a politically sensitive state.
Top leaders of the BJP, including Modi and Shah, have already indicated that Nitish Kumar will be the face for the upcoming polls.
The Election Commission, which is expected to visit the state in the next couple of weeks, has already hinted that this could also be an election which will be held in either two or three phases. The Election Commission is also considering the timing of the election which may be around festival seasons like Diwali or Chhath which is celebrated widely across the state.

Life in jhuggis was better, says Swabhiman Apartments residents

Over three weeks after moving into Swabhiman Apartments in north-west Delhi's Ashok Vihar, built as part of an in situ slum rehabilitation project for those living in illegal slum clusters razed following court orders, Phoolchand, 64, a migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh, started experiencing itchiness and rashes. 'A doctor told me that the ailment might be due to the water I am using,' Mr. Phoolchand said, adding that the symptoms disappeared days after he shifted to using bottled water for drinking and sourced piped water for bathing from a pipeline near the slum cluster where they used to live. 'What we get at the apartment is hard water, and we have stopped using it,' he said. Many apartment residents also complained about several sewer pipelines in their buildings not yet being connected to the main drainage network. Of the 14 lifts in the society, the residents added, only a few are functional, and the ground floors flood whenever it rains because the proper channel for water dispersal is missing. The flats were built by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) under the Centre's 'Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makaan' scheme and were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 3 this year ahead of the Delhi Assembly poll. Most of the 1,675 beneficiaries at the apartment are former residents of Ashok Vihar's Jailorwala Bagh slum cluster, where the DDA recently conducted an anti-encroachment drive and razed over 200 slum dwellings. 'Dysfunctional lifts' Rampreet Jha, 43, who works in the Wazirpur industrial area, not only has to purchase a 20-litre potable water jar for his family every day, but he also has to carry it several flights of stairs to his flat as the lift in his building has been out of order. 'I had hoped that moving into the apartments would be transformational for my family. However, living here feels like a curse. Life in the jhuggi was much better,' he said. 'Fear of electrocution' A security guard who wished to remain anonymous said, 'A key reason why lifts remain dysfunctional is that the ground floors are flooded and no electrician is willing to repair the lifts, fearing electrocution.' When The Hindu visited the apartments, it found accumulated water outside the main gate and in a few corridors on the ground. When reached for comment, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Delhi Jal Board and the DDA did not respond. (With inputs from Trisha Verma)

Congress's 3-day campaign for Ambedkar statue in Gwalior, MP chief shares meal with Dalit family

The Congress leaders are scheduled to reach Gwalior the next day and hold a fast demanding installation of the statue. On Tuesday, the second day of the protest, Patwari along with senior Congress leaders including former MLA Sajjan Singh Verma and former minister reached the Buddha Vihar in Bhopal's Panchasheel Nagar and shared a meal with a Dalit family from Buddha Vihar. Bhopal: The controversy surrounding the installation of the Ambedkar statue in Gwalior bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has taken a political turn with Congress state chief Jitu Patwari embarking on a three-day 'Samvidhan Satyagrah'. The controversy began in February a group of lawyers had approached the Madhya Pradesh Chief Justice for approval to install the statue at the premises of the court. The proposal was met with opposition from another faction of lawyers, who alleged that the decision to install the statue was taken without consulting the larger bar association of the state and that it lacked basic building permission. In May, arguments broke out with one faction demanding hoisting of the national flag to commemorate Operation Sindoor, while the other seeking the installation of the Ambedkar statue. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Mayawati had written to MP Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in May, urging him to ensure that there is no hiccup in the plan. Earlier this month, the Bhim Army Bharat Ekta Mission, too, had demanded the statue be installed at its designated spot. Patwari, meanwhile, referred to Amit Shah's remark in Parliament that had put the Union Home Minister in a tight spot in December. 'On one hand, the Prime Minister does 'Jai-Jai kaar' (hail) of Baba Saheb Ambedkar and then on the other hand, his Home Minister says, 'Ambedkar-Ambedkar-Ambedkar, itna bhagwaan kaa naam lenge toh bhagwaan mil jaate' (Ambedkar-Ambedkar-Ambedkar, if you take God's name so much, you will meet God'). … But Ambedkar is God for us,' the Congress state chief said in his address to party workers. He then went on to highlight the involvement of BJP workers and leaders at the district- level in atrocities against the Scheduled Castes (SCs). Between 2023 and 2025, Patwari alleged, there was at least 50 cases of murder and rape in which the victime were Dalits. He sought accountability from Mohan Yadav for the 'failure' of the police to protect the SC communities. 'When there is a crime, instead of protecting the victims, the police and the administration get busy in protecting the perpetrators,' he alleged. In response, BJP state president accused his Congress counterpart of indulging in vote bank politics and using the Scheduled Caste community for the purpose. 'What has the Congress party done for Ambedkar, apart from using his name? It was the BJP who honoured Ambedkar's legacy by honouring him with Bharat Ratna posthumously,' he told ThePrint. BJP govt unjust, undemocratic in treatment of marginalised:

Lucknow: Condemning the tonsuring of a 'katha vachak' and his associate allegedly by a group of upper caste men in Etawah, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said that the state govt is "unjust, heartless and undemocratic in its treatment of the marginalized". Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters, Akhilesh demanded that the govt should take strict action against those involved in the incident. Akhilesh also met the 'katha vachak' and his associate and gave them shawls and Rs 21,000 each. "Some people in the state think it is their govt and are acting with impunity. The govt has not tried to send a message that if someone commits such an incident, there will be consequences. All this is happening under the protection of the govt," he said. "If people in the govt ensure justice, such incidents will not happen. But what is this attitude of the govt? It is heartless, undemocratic and supports every unconstitutional work," he said. Akhilesh said that poor would start getting justice if the govt upheld the Constitution and its preamble. "People in the govt are being unjust. They are dominant and supremacist and are intimidating and humiliating the people from PDA community," he said. "Dominant groups think that the BJP govt is for those who have wielded power for centuries. However, PDA will unite against such forces and give a befitting reply to them. The PDA community is being oppressed by only 2,500 people in the govt," he said. He said that Bhagwat Katha was for everyone, and if everyone could listen, why couldn't everyone speak. "Bhagwat Katha is related to Lord Krishna. If true devotees of Krishna are stopped from Bhagwat Katha, why would anyone tolerate this insult? Supremacist people want to maintain their monopoly over Bhagwat Katha and have turned it into a business," he said. "If you want to have a monopoly – you claim from time to time that you have abolished Article 370 – then bring a law in the country that only you are allowed to be 'katha vachak', and that PDA community is not allowed," he said. Meanwhile, in a post on X, the SP chief said the Constitution did not allow caste discrimination. "This is a crime against the fundamental right to live with dignity and respect," he said.
