Attempts to stir conflict within PBB driven by envy of Sarawak's success, says Abang Johari
KUCHING (July 19): Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has dismissed recent attempts to create rifts within Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), calling them baseless efforts driven by envy over Sarawak's growing economic success.
Speaking at the launch of the Batang Saribas 1 Bridge and the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) today, he said misleading narratives had been circulated online to suggest a falling-out between him and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
'Recently, there were attempts to stir conflict within PBB (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu), suggesting that Awang Tengah and I are at odds.
'These things happen when people are jealous of our success, because our economy is doing well,' he said.
Abang Johari stressed that such attempts would not derail the unity within the party or Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) as a whole.
He also highlighted Sarawak's rising global profile in the green energy sector, particularly its leadership in hydrogen development.
He said he had recently been invited to speak in Japan and will be addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos this coming January on the global economy, adding that the forum had recognised Sarawak as an emerging industrial cluster powered by renewable energy.
'Sarawak is being noticed. No other state is producing green energy like we are. With the electricity we generate, we can meet our own needs and sell the surplus to earn income.
'That income can help fund university tuition. Who benefits? The people do,' he said.
Abang Johari reaffirmed his administration's commitment to unity and people-centric development.
'That is why when we are doing well, some people will try to cause division. But don't worry – as long as I'm in GPS, we will not be divided.
'We will continue to prioritise the people of Sarawak. As the late Tok Nan (Pehin Sri Adenan Satem) used to say – jangan liat aja (don't just watch),' he said. Abang Johari Awang Tengah jealous PBB stir conflict

This vision is being realised through the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030, which outlines an integrated and green development strategy. Among the key initiatives highlighted are investments in the hydrogen economy to support industrial decarbonisation, the expansion of hydropower as a renewable energy source and the development of carbon-related projects that prioritise forest conservation. He also emphasised that Sarawak is not waiting to be led in the sustainability agenda. Instead, it aims to be a frontrunner in shaping the region's green energy future. 'With this strategy, Sarawak is not only charting a new path for Malaysia but positioning itself as Asean's battery. We are not waiting to follow and we choose to lead,' he said. 110 Sarawak students receive RM28m Petronas education sponsorships
KUCHING: A total of 110 Sarawakian students have been awarded Petronas education sponsorships worth RM28 million to pursue higher education at leading universities in Malaysia and abroad. The recipients, selected from nearly 9,000 applicants, demonstrated outstanding academic performance, leadership qualities, and active participation in co-curricular activities during their 2024 Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM) examinations. The students will enrol in courses such as chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, economics, and law at institutions including Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and universities in the UK and Australia. The awards were presented by Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah on behalf of Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Fatimah expressed gratitude for Petronas' long-standing commitment to nurturing Sarawakian talent. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who led the Malaysian delegation, was welcomed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. According to Sarawak Public Communcations Unit (Ukas) report, Sarawak's active participation in the consultation underscores its strategic role in enhancing regional connectivity, particularly in relation to Borneo's development and strengthening of Malaysia-Indonesia ties in the context of Indonesia's capital relocation to Nusantara.
