Egypt, Turkey Condemn Israeli Plan to Fully Occupy Gaza
Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Expatriates' Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Saturday, 9 August 2025, in the coastal city of New Alamein. The meeting began with a bilateral session, followed by expanded discussions attended by senior officials from both countries.
According to Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the ministers expressed a joint commitment to strengthening bilateral ties in all fields, particularly in light of the symbolic milestone marking 100 years of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Turkey in 2025. Abdelatty underscored the importance of continuing to implement the outcomes of the first High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting, held in Istanbul in September 2024 under the leadership of the two presidents. He called for boosting Turkish direct investments in Egypt and expanding cooperation in manufacturing, energy, transport, and tourism, with the strategic goal of raising bilateral trade to $15 billion.
The Egyptian minister also thanked Turkey for supporting Egypt's nominee, Dr. Khaled El-Enany, for the post of Director-General of UNESCO, highlighting mutual backing in international forums.
Joint Position on Gaza and Palestinian Cause
The talks addressed urgent regional developments, particularly the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza under the ongoing Israeli offensive. Both ministers strongly condemned the Israeli Security Cabinet's decision to fully occupy Gaza, calling it a violation of international law and a destabilizing act for the region. Abdelatty warned against Israel's policy of 'systematic starvation' and 'genocide,' stressing that repeated violations undermine the Palestinian people's inalienable rights, especially the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He reiterated Egypt's ongoing mediation efforts with Qatar and the United States to reach a ceasefire agreement, alongside facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Abdelatty urged greater international pressure on Israel to increase the number of aid trucks and ensure their unhindered entry.
Talks on Libya, Sudan, Syria, and the Horn of Africa
On Libya, the ministers stressed the urgent need to hold simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, dismantle militias, and ensure the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries as the only path to lasting stability.
On Sudan, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's support for Sudan's state institutions, calling for a ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access while emphasizing respect for Sudan's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Regarding Syria, the Egyptian minister rejected any actions threatening the country's stability, condemned Israeli occupation of Syrian land, and denounced violations of the 1974 disengagement agreement, labeling them a breach of international law.
On the Horn of Africa, Abdelatty emphasized respect for Somalia's sovereignty and unity, rejecting foreign interference in its internal affairs.
The high-level talks underscored the expanding scope of Egypt-Turkey cooperation and the two countries' aligned positions on pressing regional crises, marking a new phase in bilateral relations amid complex geopolitical challenges.

President El-Sisi directs comprehensive roadmap for modernizing Egyptian media - Society
President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi directed on Sunday the formulation of a comprehensive roadmap for developing Egyptian media, drawing on all available specialized expertise and competencies, according to a presidential statement. The president's remarks came during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation Khaled Abdelaziz, Chairman of the National Press Authority Abdel-Sadek El-Shorbagy, and Chairman of the National Media Authority Ahmed El-Meslemany. "This aims to ensure national media keeps pace with rapid global changes and fulfils its mission in line with the orientations of the modern Egyptian state and the New Republic," President El-Sisi said, affirming the state's commitment to upholding freedom of expression. According to the presidential spokesman, President El-Sisi opened the meeting by extending his greetings and appreciation to all workers in the media sector. He praised the Egyptian media's vital role in building national character, shaping public awareness, informing citizens of developments at home and abroad, highlighting achievements, elevating public taste, and reinforcing societal values and constants. He also highlighted the importance of embracing all patriotic viewpoints within the Egyptian media system to strengthen pluralism and intellectual openness. Moreover, the president approved the government's proposed cash allowance for journalists and directed that the issue of end-of-service gratuities for the Egyptian Radio and Television Union's (Maspero) employees be resolved. President El-Sisi further stressed the importance of making data and information available to the media, especially in times of crises that command public attention, so that issues are addressed adequately and objectively. He also urged relying on qualified young cadres for media work and organizing educational and training programmes for sector employees. Furthermore, he encouraged media officials to focus on national security concepts and openness to diverse opinions, thereby entrenching the principle of 'opinion and counter-opinion' within Egypt's media ecosystem. The president was also briefed during the meeting on efforts to develop the Maspero system, including its affiliated channels and plans to modernize the national press institutions, the spokesman added. London police arrest 466 people for backing banned Palestine Action group
London — Police have arrested 466 people in central London on Saturday for protesting the British government's decision to ban the pro-Palestinian activist group Palestine Action under anti-terrorism laws. 'As of 9pm, 466 people had been arrested for showing support for Palestine Action,' the Metropolitan Police wrote on X on Saturday. Eight arrests were made for other offenses, including five for assaults on officers, but police said none were seriously injured. Palestine Action is a UK-based group which says it aims to disrupt the operations of weapons manufacturers supplying the Israeli government. Last month, UK lawmakers voted to proscribe the group after two Palestine Action activists broke into Britain's largest air base in central England in June, damaging two military aircraft. The group's ban makes it illegal under UK law to be a member of – or invite support for – Palestine Action and puts them on par with terrorist organizations such as Hamas, al Qaeda and ISIS. Large crowds turned up for demonstrations organized by Defend Our Juries on Saturday afternoon at London's Parliament Square. London's Metropolitan Police had cautioned that it would arrest anyone showing support for the proscribed group. One 80-year-old protestor from Surrey, England, who wished to remain anonymous, told CNN that she attended the protest to show 'what a farce' the government's decision on Palestine Action was. She said organizers were aiming to have at least 500 people sitting peacefully with signs. 'The right to protest is one we protect fiercely but this is very different from displaying support for this one specific and narrow, proscribed organization,' she said, according to the UK's Press Association. Amnesty International UK condemned the arrest of peaceful protesters as 'a violation of the UK's international obligations to protect the rights of freedom of expression and assembly,' in a post on X. Last week, Palestine Action's co-founder Huda Ammori won a bid to challenge the ban, with a London High Court judge granting permission to seek a judicial review. The ministers reaffirmed their united commitment to a negotiated two-state solution as the only viable path to ensure Israelis and Palestinians live side by side in peace, security, and dignity.
