French Open: Defending champion Alcaraz cruises into last four

Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz glided into the semifinals of Roland Garros on Tuesday, blowing away American 12th seed Tommy Paul for the loss of just five games in the night session on Court Philippe Chatrier. The Spaniard needed just one hour 34 minutes to dismantle former world number nine Paul 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 and set up a last-four meeting with Italy's Lorenzo Musetti. Musetti, seeded eighth, earlier beat Paul's compatriot and 15th seed Frances Tiafoe in four sets. It will be the third time Alcaraz and Musetti meet this clay-court season. Alcaraz has dominated that series, beating the Italian in the final in Monte Carlo before also stopping him in the last four on his way to the Rome title. And the 22-year-old's blistering performance under the lights on centre court in Paris will have many backing him to make it three from three against Musetti as he seeks to defend his title. "It was, I could close my eyes and everything went in, my feeling today was amazing. Today was one of those matches where everything went in, I'm just pleased with everything," said Alcaraz. Alcaraz fired 40 winners on his way to victory over Paul for just 22 unforced errors as he emphatically put inconsistent displays in the previous rounds behind him. "This kind of match is never easy," he said. "I've played Tommy many times and he's beat me twice." Despite previous success against Alcaraz, it took the 28-year-old American eight games to get on the scoreboard as his opponent raced out of the blocks, mixing powerful groundstrokes with perfectly-weighted drop-shots and lobs. Paul put up determined resistance in the third set but couldn't deny Alcaraz, who broke in the ninth game before holding to love for victory. "I know you wanted to watch more tennis," an apologetic Alcaraz told the crowd on centre court. "I have to say sorry for that. But I had to do my work." Paul has now lost his last four meetings with Alcaraz, including at the same venue last year in the last eight of the Olympic Games.

Mac Allister brothers crowned champions on same day in different countries

Argentina's Mac Allister brothers Alexis and Kevin pulled off an unusual family feat on Sunday by lifting championship trophies on the same afternoon in different countries, though neither of them took part in their teams' final game of the season. Alexis got his hands on the Premier League trophy at Anfield after Liverpool secured the title last month, while his older brother Kevin endured a nervy afternoon in Belgium as his club Union Saint-Gilloise ended a 90-year wait for the championship. While Kevin was suspended for their last fixture of the season at home to Gent, where a 3-1 win was enough to see them win a first title since 1935, Alexis sat out Liverpool's final match at home to Crystal Palace to avoid injury. "I think he played throughout the last part of the season with the Argentinian mentality he has," Liverpool manager Arne Slot said. "Never gives up, no matter what he feels, but it is not smart to play a player that has, not a big injury but something to take a risk with." The 26-year-old midfielder, who was in the Argentina side that won the World Cup in Qatar, moved to Liverpool from Brighton Hove Albion two seasons ago and started 30 games in their title-winning campaign. Kevin, a year older, plays further back but exhibits the same resilient characteristics as his brother. Het Nieuwsblad described the defender on Monday as "a soldier who never gives up". "He played in recent weeks with a mask, a bandaged shoulder, and a taped knee, but refused to give up due to injury." Kevin said it had been tough not to be on the field helping his teammates. 'It was difficult to watch the game from the sidelines. I was calm, even though the first half wasn't our best," he told reporters. "I always try to keep the group calm. Sometimes emotions get too high and that's not good. I'm glad we stayed calm and finished it off.' A third brother, 29-year-old Francis, currently plays in Argentina's top flight with Insituto. All three brothers started at Argentinos Juniors, appearing together for the first time in 2017. Their father Carlos won three caps for Argentina and played at Boca Juniors, where he won a league championship in 1992.

Sunderland return to Premier League in stunning fashion

Sunderland staged a remarkable comeback to beat Sheffield United 2-1 in the Championship playoff final with substitute Tom Watson sending them back to the Premier League by scoring the winner deep in stoppage time at Wembley on Saturday. Teenager Watson drilled in a superb low finish from outside the penalty area to end the club's eight-season absence from the top flight which included a spell in the third tier. Victory in what is widely-regarded as the richest game in world football means Sunderland will benefit to the tune of 220 million pounds ($297.79 million) in extra revenue thanks to the Premier League's lucrative TV rights deals. Finances were the last thing on the minds of the Sunderland fans though when Watson sparked ecstatic scenes of joy. For United it was a crushing disappointment as they dominated much of the game against a side who finished 14 points below them in the regular Championship season. Incredibly it was the 19-year-old Watson's last contribution for his boyhood club before the winger moves to Brighton & Hove Albion, but what a parting gift it was. "It's unbelievable, we'll see each other in the Premier League next season," he said. "I have been thinking about it for weeks and that story was written when I came off the bench." It had looked like a bridge too far for French coach Regis Le Bris's youthful Sunderland side as they trailed to a stunning 25th-minute counter-attack goal by Tyrese Campbell in a first half completely dominated by United. Campbell's cool finish from Gus Hamer's inch-perfect pass rewarded United for a superb start in which they almost took the lead in the opening minutes when Kieffer Moore's header was brilliantly saved by Anthony Patterson. Sunderland also lost defender Luke O'Nien to a dislocated shoulder and were relieved not to be 2-0 down when Harrison Burrows bounced a shot into the net after a clearance fell to him but the effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR check. Chris Wilder's United, bidding to bounce straight back to the Premier League, were in control after the break but stunned in the 76th minute when Eliezer Mayenda showed great control and fired an unstoppable shot high into the net past Michael Cooper. Extra time and the possibility of a penalty shootout loomed when Moore was guilty of giving the ball away and Watson was allowed to advance and write his name in Sunderland folklore. It completed an incredible playoff campaign by a Sunderland side who lost their last five regular-season games and then scraped past Coventry City in the semi-finals with a last-gasp goal by Dan Ballard. Sunderland's surprise win means Jobe Bellingham, younger brother of Real Madrid's Jude, will be a Premier League player next season, something his sibling has yet to experience. "I take pride in saying I was one of the players to help this great club get back to where it belongs," he said
