Indian-American teen develops app that can detect early signs of heart disease in just seven seconds
In the United States an estimated 48% of adults or 121.5 million people, have some form of cardiovascular disease according to the American Heart Association. Cardiovascular diseases which include heart attack and stroke are the No.
1 killer worldwide, responsible for about 32% of global deaths. The risk of these deaths can be reduced with earlier detection.
Now, a 14-year-old from Frisco, Texas, has developed a ground-breaking smartphone app to detect early signs of heart disease in just seven seconds.
Circadian AI, the app records heart sounds, filters out ambient noise and analyses the data using a cloud-based machine learning model- all by placing a smartphone near the chest.
The app identifies arrhythmias, irregular heartbeats, early signs of heart failure, indicators of coronary artery disease and heart valve abnormalities.
Siddharth Nandyala's motivation stemmed from his desire to use AI to help people and revolutionize the healthcare system. 'What really took my interest in the healthcare side of artificial intelligence was the sheer amount of impact and the change that can be made,' he told the Smithsonian magazine.

He spent months gathering data from hospitals in the US and India and collaborated with medical professionals and patients to refine his app. The clinical trials for his app involved approximately 15,000 patients in the US and around 3,500 in India with the app achieving over 96% accuracy in detecting heart abnormalities, as per Nandyala.
Currently, the app is intended only for clinical use by trained personnel, as it requires proper understanding to operate effectively.
Nandyala emphasized that it is a pre-screening tool and not a replacement for traditional diagnostic methods like EKGs.
Medical professionals praised the app's potential to advance medical care, especially in areas with limited access to healthcare.
'An early potential diagnosis in patients who otherwise may not have had access to medical care may ultimately reduce long-term morbidity and mortality from this condition,' Jameel Ahmed, an electrophysiologist at Louisiana State University, told the magazine.
For the 14-year-old, this is not his first innovative work of technology. He previously designed a low-cost prosthetic arm and founded STEM IT- a startup that creates science and technology kits for students.
His work has earned him a Certificate of Recognition from the US House of Representatives and a letter of congratulations from then-President
Joe Biden
.
The young innovator is already a freshman studying computer science at the University of Texas. He hopes to expand the app's capabilities to detect lung-related illnesses pneumonia and pulmonary embolism using similar techniques.

Chronic headaches and migraines affect 1 in 4 adults in Delhi-NCR, study finds
Headaches are consuming a significant share of daily life for adults in Delhi and neighbouring cities, with a new study estimating that people in the region spend 5.5% of their waking hours with head pain. The research, published in the Journal of Headache and Pain, found that one in four adults in Delhi-NCR — about 26% of the population — would benefit from professional headache care. Migraines , present in 26% of adults, contributed to 2% of the time loss, while tension-type headaches , despite affecting 34% of the population, led to only 0.5% of time lost. "While migraines are more disabling than tension headaches, it is the chronic, medication-related headaches that truly erode quality of life. This calls for better awareness, diagnosis, and management," the authors stated. These higher pain levels resulted in greater disruption of household duties, social activities, and overall quality of life, though the effect on paid work was less pronounced. Using disability weights from the Global Burden of Disease study, the researchers estimated that migraine alone accounted for 3.6% of individual health loss. However, people suffering from chronic headaches were the most willing to pay for relief, highlighting their disproportionate burden. The study concludes that headache disorders in northern India are both highly prevalent and significantly disruptive to everyday life. The findings are consistent with earlier research from Karnataka, where chronic headaches were also found to have a more profound impact than migraines or tension-type headaches.

They warned that the sale of specific chips—Nvidia's H20 and AMD 's MI308—could potentially bolster China's military capabilities. The senators' letter was a response to a recent announcement by Trump, which granted export licenses to the companies in exchange for a 15% share of the revenue from these sales. These sales to a leading adversary run counter to U.S. national security interests, and the collection of fees appear to violate U.S. statutes and may even be unconstitutional. Our export controls exist to ensure that American goods and technologies are protected from our adversaries. To ensure such protection, export laws explicitly state that, '[n]o fee may be charged in connection with the submission, processing, or consideration of any application for a license or other authorization or other request.' Yet on August 11, 2025, you stated that: 'I want 20 percent if I'm going to approve [these licenses] for [Nvidia (and AMD)] and '[Nvidia] said, 'Would you make it 15?' So we negotiate a little deal'. This 'negotiated deal,' allowing American semiconductor manufacturers to pay a 15 percent fee for the ability to sell critically sensitive technology to our adversary, blatantly violates the purpose of export control laws. Additionally, your spokesperson has indicated that your administration may be considering this form of 'deal making' for other exports. A cornerstone of U.S artificial intelligence strategy for years has been to protect America's advantage in AI computing capability and access to leading-edge hardware, compared to the PRC and other key adversaries. AI represents a crucial enabling technology that is critical to the future of everything from finance to healthcare, manufacturing, and national security. The PRC seeks to use AI to strengthen its military systems like hypersonics, as well as its communications, surveillance, battlefield decisionmaking processes. In April, your administration placed export controls on the flow of Nvidia's H20 and AMD's MI308 chips to the PRC, identifying the national security risk of the PRC's military having access to these advanced AI chips. However, only months later, following industry lobbying, you have flippantly reversed that decision with no coherent explanation for how the national security risks you had in April have been mitigated in August. Our national security and military readiness relies upon American innovators inventing and producing the best technology in the world, and in maintaining that qualitative advantage in sensitive domains. The United States has historically been successful in maintaining and building that advantage because of, in part, our ability to deny adversaries access to those technologies. The willingness displayed in this arrangement to 'negotiate' away America's competitive edge that is key to our national security in exchange for what is, in effect, a commission on a sale of AI-enabling technology to our main global competitor, is cause for serious alarm. We again urge your Administration to quickly reverse course and abandon this reckless plan to trade away U.S. technology leadership. In order to assist the public in its understanding of this proposed deal, we request the following information by August 22: 1. What entities or parties were involved in the 'negotiation' that resulted in the 15 percent payment requirement as a condition for granting a license to sell covered chips to the PRC? 2. What laws, regulations, or other factors were identified, raised, evaluated, and/or otherwise determined to be relevant in those negotiations, including any legal opinions provided by Administration attorneys used to inform the legality of various approached proposed during those deliberations? 3. Who was responsible for determining that this arrangement complies with United States laws, regulations, and international obligations? 4. Describe the manner in which the 15 percent fee will be determined and collected. 5. What individual(s) or entities are responsible for making the determination and collection identified in item 4? 6. List all purposes to which the 15 percent fee payments will be directed once collected. 7. What other companies are under consideration for this kind of deal utilizing export control laws?
