Indian-American teen develops app that can detect early signs of heart disease in just seven seconds
Image credits: X/@OddityCentral In the United States an estimated 48% of adults or 121.5 million people, have some form of cardiovascular disease according to the American Heart Association. Cardiovascular diseases which include heart attack and stroke are the No. 1 killer worldwide, responsible for about 32% of global deaths. The risk of these deaths can be reduced with earlier detection. Now, a 14-year-old from Frisco, Texas, has developed a ground-breaking smartphone app to detect early signs of heart disease in just seven seconds. Circadian AI, the app records heart sounds, filters out ambient noise and analyses the data using a cloud-based machine learning model- all by placing a smartphone near the chest. The app identifies arrhythmias, irregular heartbeats, early signs of heart failure, indicators of coronary artery disease and heart valve abnormalities. Siddharth Nandyala's motivation stemmed from his desire to use AI to help people and revolutionize the healthcare system. 'What really took my interest in the healthcare side of artificial intelligence was the sheer amount of impact and the change that can be made,' he told the Smithsonian magazine. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo 'Even one life detected is one life saved' he added. Currently, the app is intended only for clinical use by trained personnel, as it requires proper understanding to operate effectively. Nandyala emphasized that it is a pre-screening tool and not a replacement for traditional diagnostic methods like EKGs. Medical professionals praised the app's potential to advance medical care, especially in areas with limited access to healthcare. 'An early potential diagnosis in patients who otherwise may not have had access to medical care may ultimately reduce long-term morbidity and mortality from this condition,' Jameel Ahmed, an electrophysiologist at Louisiana State University, told the magazine. For the 14-year-old, this is not his first innovative work of technology. He previously designed a low-cost prosthetic arm and founded STEM IT- a startup that creates science and technology kits for students. His work has earned him a Certificate of Recognition from the US House of Representatives and a letter of congratulations from then-President Joe Biden . The young innovator is already a freshman studying computer science at the University of Texas. He hopes to expand the app's capabilities to detect lung-related illnesses pneumonia and pulmonary embolism using similar techniques.

"Wipe Off Your Makeup": Woman Fails Facial Recognition At China Airport
A passenger departing Shanghai was asked to remove her makeup after the facial scanner failed to identify her at the immigration counter. A short video of the young woman being disciplined by an airport employee surfaced on social media. In the clip, she is seen wiping and scrubbing her face while the airport staff instructs her in an irritated tone. The employee insisted, "Wipe everything off until you look like your passport photo." "Why would you do your makeup like that? You are asking for trouble," she was heard saying in the video. The video was taken at the Shanghai Airport in September 2024 and initially shared on Chinese social media, per Oddity Central. It remained unknown if she eventually cleared the airport's facial recognition test. View this post on Instagram A post shared by wchinapost (@wchinapost) The clip sparked hilarious responses on social media. One commented, "It's not like she was able to walk around with a filter on in real life, right?" "This is cosplay. Not just regular makeup," a second comment read. Others sympathised with the young lady, saying she appeared uncomfortable enough and that the airport official had no right to harass her over her makeup. "Poor girl should not be laughed at. The guard hurt her feelings. Not nice and not funny," one said. Others questioned whether makeup should be a problem for modern facial recognition technology. "No matter how thick the makeup is, the face shouldn't be unrecognisable, right? Isn't it time to upgrade the equipment?" another asked. Not long ago, model influencer Janaina Prazeres was also held for 40 minutes by immigration officials who couldn't identify her surgically altered face. Ms Prazeres, who Playboy Norway referred to as the "perfect woman," has spent about one million dollars on 20 cosmetic surgeries, including nose jobs, body lifts, and complete face "harmonisation," per The Post.

Fluent In English, She Abruptly Stopped Speaking The Language. Here's Why
A Chinese woman, who was fluent in English, inexplicably lost her ability to speak the language after a cerebral haemorrhage. The 24-year-old's inability to speak the language after experiencing a strange medical ailment left the Chinese doctors handling the case perplexed and in disbelief. Wan Feng, the director of the neurosurgery department at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital in Guangzhou, China, said the young lady suddenly experienced a very rare symptom after falling sick in class, Oddity Central reported. Following the incident, she could no longer speak English despite being once fluent in it. She could only speak Mandarin and Cantonese. For some reason, the young woman could still read and write it flawlessly. She was eventually hospitalised at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital's Department of Neurosurgery to seek medical attention. Doctors initially thought her brain's ability to speak might have been impacted by a brain tumour. An MRI revealed she experienced a cerebral haemorrhage in the left motor part of her brain, which was in charge of communication, particularly affecting her ability to speak English. The woman reportedly underwent brain surgery to release the pressure in her brain. Soon after, she regained her English-speaking ability, the report added. In what was a completely opposite case 10 years ago, an elderly Chinese woman, who slipped into a coma for two weeks, woke up and spoke perfect English. But she couldn't speak a word of her native language, according to a report in the Business Standard. Liu Jieyu, 90, who worked as an English teacher but had not spoken the language for over 30 years, mysteriously acquired the ability to speak the language perfectly and forgot how to communicate in Chinese.

Woman Ends Her Marriage Because ChatGPT Said Her Husband Was Cheating On Her
Last Updated: A Greek woman's marriage ended after she followed ChatGPT's advice, which suggested her husband was having an affair. Despite his denial, she believed the AI & filed for divorce In a twist of modern-day reliance on technology, a Greek man's marriage has been jeopardised due to advice from an artificial intelligence chatbot. Traditionally, people managed their own tasks, but nowadays, both physical and mental chores are increasingly delegated to machines. Computers are progressively taking over cognitive functions, leading to a rise in demand for chatbots and artificial intelligence, which significantly impacts our lives. A recent incident in Greece highlights this influence, where a woman ended her marriage based on guidance from ChatGPT. According to reports, this woman sought the help of the chatbot for various tasks and ultimately followed its advice to divorce her husband. The startling event was recounted by the husband on the Greek television morning show, To Proino. According to a report by OddityCentral, the man revealed that his wife had participated in a social media trend where ChatGPT interpreted coffee grounds to predict future events. She made coffee for herself and her husband, photographed the coffee grounds, and submitted the images to ChatGPT for analysis. The chatbot suggested that her husband was involved in an affair, prompting the woman to take drastic action. Despite the husband's dismissal of ChatGPT's interpretation as nonsense, his wife believed it wholeheartedly. She asked him to leave, informed their children of the impending divorce, and even involved a lawyer to prepare the necessary documents. The man expressed his disbelief at the situation, noting that his previously happy life was now being dismantled due to an AI's dubious prediction. ChatGPT had claimed that the man was fantasising about a woman whose name began with an 'E" and was destined to start a relationship with her. Additionally, the AI suggested that he was already involved in an affair, which further fuelled his wife's determination to proceed with the divorce. The couple is now entangled in legal proceedings, with the husband's lawyer contesting the divorce because AI-generated claims hold no legal weight. The man emphasised his innocence, asserting that he had never engaged in infidelity. The incident has attracted widespread attention in Greece, with traditional practitioners of tasseography, an ancient practice of fortune-telling by interpreting coffee grounds, explaining that accurate readings involve more than just the grounds. They also consider the foam and the saucer, skills that ChatGPT, despite its capabilities, cannot replicate. This bizarre case underscores the growing influence of artificial intelligence on personal decisions and the importance of critical thinking in distinguishing technology's limitations from human expertise.
