Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has always made waves with his late-round draft picks, and rookie running back Brashard Smith may be poised to be his best seventh-round selection to date.
A versatile wide receiver-running back combo with the University of Miami Hurricanes and Southern Methodist University Mustangs, Smith made several standout plays during training camp and is likely to get significant playing time in Kansas City's preseason exhibition against the Seattle Seahawks on Friday, August 15.
Last season, Kansas City's front office reunited with veteran rusher Kareem Hunt after star running back Isiah Pacheco sustained a serious injury that kept him out for much of the Chiefs' 2024 campaign.
While injuries are inherently unpredictable, neither Hunt nor Pacheco is indestructible, and Kansas City's coaching staff is sure to be keeping a close eye on the depth of their offensive backfield, just in case any untimely incidents force their veterans to the sideline.
Should the Chiefs need to seek a tertiary or quaternary option at the running back position this season, Smith would likely be a candidate to replace Hunt or Pacheco on Kansas City's depth chart, which may make him exactly the kind of hidden gem fantasy footballers should look for in the late rounds of their drafts.
Given his collegiate experience as a wide receiver and stunning shiftiness, Smith could develop into one of Patrick Mahomes' favorite targets in the passing game — if given a chance to prove himself.
Stay tuned to see if Smith can put on a show against the Seahawks tomorrow night to cement his place on the Chiefs' 53-man roster.

ESPN's 'Get Up' program: Bills QB Josh Allen called 'best to never get there'

This past week on ESPN's Get Up, host Mike Greenberg made his case for why Bills QB and NFL MVP Josh Allen is the best player at his position to never start in a Super Bowl. The Buffalo Bills have made it to the AFC Championship game twice since drafting Allen, once in 2020 and once in 2024, losing both times to the Kansas City Chiefs. Both times, Allen and the offense did enough multiple times in the game to give the Bills a chance to win The team has continued to add and secure talent on both sides of the ball. About the only things Allen and the team have not done since he became their quarterback are securing a No. 1 seed and first-round bye in the playoffs, reaching a Super Bowl, or winning a Super Bowl. Could this be the year that changes? Allen does appear to be the best quarterback not to make it to the Super Bowl, on account of him and Patrick Mahomes being far and away historic players of their generation at the position. Here's what Greenberg had to say: 'As we pondered what is at stake in this 2025 NFL season for various players, we stumbled onto this. Josh Allen has the chance to remove his name from a place that no name ever wants to occupy, namely, the greatest quarterback never to play in a Super Bowl, because he is that. And it's getting late early for his chances. Let me explain. Allen has already started 13 playoff games. The most that any quarterback ever started before making the big game was 12. Allen has thrown 25 postseason touchdowns. The most anyone else threw before making the Super Bowl was just 17. That was Peyton Manning, by the way. So Allen is well behind the curve. And candidly, it's not as though he can play much better. The numbers say he might be the best postseason quarterback ever. I told you he has thrown 25 playoff touchdowns. There are a total of 21 quarterbacks who've thrown at least 20. He's the only one not to start a Super Bowl. In his four playoff runs that ended in losses to Kansas City. Allen has accounted for 28 touchdowns and one turnover. That is across 10 games and 424 passes and runs. His touchdown to interception ratio in the playoffs by a wide margin, the best of all time. It's over 6 to 1. Mahomes is second at less than 5 to 1. In playoff history, teams that score at least three touchdowns with zero turnovers are 140 and 19. Allen is the only quarterback to lose more than one of those games. He has lost three of them all in the last four years, all against Kansas City. So, the case on that part of this is closed. Josh Allen is the best quarterback never to start a Super Bowl. The open question is, being still only 29, is there still another level he can take this to change that?'

Patrick Mahomes addresses Taylor Swift's ‘Swifties' crashing Chiefs training camp

Patrick Mahomes addresses Taylor Swift's 'Swifties' crashing Chiefs training camp originally appeared on The Sporting News Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has a largely detached attitude when it comes to the fanfare his teammate Travis Kelce and world-renowned pop-star girlfriend Taylor Swift have created with their several-year relationship. Mahomes enjoys the fanfare to a degree – he joked that the two being a real couple was something 'I gotta see it until I believe it' – but he also wants to keep things focused on football. Mahomes always defaults to getting business done on the field when he feels he's getting too deep into the celebrity gossip. Sometimes, that gets difficult when an army of Swift's fans is all of a sudden die-hard Chiefs fans. Mahomes addressed the 'Swifties' invading training camp for the chance of meeting their idol. 'I'm interested to see what camp looks like this year. Obviously, we got a big fan base with the Swifties coming. I'm interested to see if it's even crazier, if that makes sense,' Mahomes said on the ESPN docuseries, 'The Kingdom.' Mahomes admitted he's more of a background character in his and wife Brittany's relationship with Kelce and Swift. 'They didn't call me. They called Brittany. I was in the back of the Facetime,' Mahomes recently told reporters. Needless to say, Mahomes seeks a much different spotlight than Kelce does. And it's fair to say that Swift's arrival has coincided, if not directly caused, the quarterback-tight end duo to grow apart. Kelce's numbers and general performance have taken a major hit since Swift arrived. FS1 host Jason McIntyre sees a drop-off from the Chiefs with Swift, and all her Swifties, in tow. McIntyre tabbed Kansas City as a non-playoff team this coming season. 'T-Swift drops new album, as T-Kelce drops out of playoffs,' McIntyre joked on 'The Herd.' 'I'm sorry, I got to stick to it guys. I've been on this boat for months. I get it, the wide receiver room should be I got to see it. 'I don't see it from Kelce, I didn't see it in the playoffs. Obviously we're Taylor Swift fans here on the show, but I'm sorry, I see some drop off from the Chiefs. 'It's tough to stay on top forever without reinventing yourself and I didn't see the reinvention this offseason...I know it's crazy, but I don't have the Chiefs in the playoffs and I'm sticking with it.' Mahomes may never outright admit it, but it's fair to wonder if he wishes the Swift hysteria had never happened.
