King orders MINDEF to scrap 30-year-old Black Hawk helicopter plan

Focus Malaysia2 days ago
YANG di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has directed the Defence Ministry (MINDEF) to cancel plans to acquire ageing Black Hawk helicopters, warning against repeating past mistakes like the purchase of second-hand SkyHawks.
Calling such aircraft 'flying coffins', His Majesty criticised the presence of agents and former generals acting as 'salesmen' in defence procurement, which he said inflated costs and wasted public funds.
'Do not repeat the past mistake when we bought second-hand SkyHawk aircraft. Do we want to put our pilots into 'flying coffins'? Think about it yourselves.
'I believe all this is happening because the MINDEF is full of 'agents' or former generals who have become 'salesmen'. Even textile-selling companies are trying to come in and sell drones.
'If every procurement must go through middlemen's prices, then the allocation will never be enough. So don't try to fool me. If you don't want to listen to my advice, after this I will not speak up anymore,' His Majesty decreed.
The King stressed that defence spending must avoid middlemen and uphold safety. His remarks came at the 60th anniversary parade of the Special Service Regiment, following recent delays and cancellations in Black Hawk leasing contracts. — Aug 16, 2025

Brunei announces financing scheme for youth entrepreneurs

Image from Biz Belia Brunei BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Xinhua): Brunei has announced the establishment of the BizBelia scheme, giving opportunities to local youth entrepreneurs to obtain financial resources, official media reported. The initiative aimed to stimulate the growth of local youths' enterprises, while encouraging financial institutions to facilitate the involvement of more youth entrepreneurs. His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam, expressed strong hopes that youth will fully utilise the newly established Shariah-compliant micro-financing scheme to jointly propel the nation's economic growth. The monarch said the scheme offers local youth entrepreneurs access to financial resources from Brunei's financial institutions. Sultan Hassanal hopes it will stimulate the growth and development of youth enterprises and set an example for other financial institutions to involve youth more actively. With proper guidance and robust support from relevant parties, the Ruler is confident that youth entrepreneurs will shine not only nationally but also on the international stage. He voiced these views in a titah at the 20th National Youth Day on Saturday (Aug 16). The present generation of youth, the monarch noted, possesses a strong spirit and great leadership potential. The positive transformation shown by the youth signals their willingness to shoulder the heavy responsibilities of leadership, a key element in Realising Brunei Vision 2035. He added that the government remains committed to empowering youth and providing a conducive environment for their growth. In pursuing Wawasan Brunei 2035, youth are pivotal as Drivers of Economic Transformation. Sultan Hassanal welcomed the shift in mindset from job seekers to job creators through entrepreneurship and business ventures. Acknowledging the challenges in obtaining financing to start a business—particularly for youth who lack business performance records or collateral— Sultan Hassanal announced the establishment of BizBelia, a Shariah-compliant micro-financing scheme for youth entrepreneurs. The scheme results from a strategic collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and Bank Usahawan Berhad.

Scrap the Black Hawk plans, King tells Mindef

Regal presence: Sultan Ibrahim inspecting the guard of honour during the 60th Anniversary Parade of Rejimen Gerak Khas at Kem Iskandar. — Bernama MERSING: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has told the Defence Ministry not to repeat mistakes in the procurement of military assets, particularly used aircraft with questionable safety. His Majesty said the experience in purchasing used A-4 Skyhawk aircraft should serve as a lesson. 'Do not repeat the past mistakes, like when we bought second-hand Skyhawks ... are we going to put our pilots in 'flying coffins'? 'I believe all this happened because the Defence Ministry is full of agents or ex-generals turned salesmen, with even textile traders trying to sell drones,' said Sultan Ibrahim at the 60th Anniversary Parade of Rejimen Gerak Khas (RGK) at Kem Iskandar here yesterday. Also present were the Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail and Tunku Putera Johor Tunku Abu Bakar Sultan Ibrahim. The Bernama report also stated that Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Malaysian Armed Forces chief Jen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, and Army chief Jen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, were in attendance as well. The parade featured five detachments comprising 18 officers and 173 personnel from the 11th Special Service Regiment, the 21st Commando Regiment, the 22nd Commando Regiment, the Combined Unit and the Army Special Warfare Training Centre. Since its formation in 1965, the regiment has evolved from a small unit into a modern special forces outfit. Developed by McDonnell-Douglas (now part of Boeing), the Skyhawk was closely associated with the Royal Malaysian Air Force, which acquired 80 units from the United States in 1982 at US$1mil each, before retiring the fleet due to high accident rates. In the same vein, Sultan Ibrahim, who is also Colonel Commandant of Gerup Gerak Khas, also advised the Defence Minister to cancel the proposed acquisition of refurbished Black Hawk helicopters that are over 30 years old, out of concern the same mistake would be repeated. The King emphasised that all parties involved in procurement must ensure evaluations are conducted transparently and based on actual need, and not merely on the recommendation of agents or vested interests. 'Do not waste time buying nonsense that does not fit the needs of the military. If you don't know the price, ask me first. 'Five years ago, I pointed out the purchase of rigid raiding craft for the commandos at RM5mil, when I could have sourced a better boat for under RM2mil. 'Recently, I heard there was a proposal to buy a similar boat but in a larger size, at nearly RM10mil. 'This makes no sense and must be carefully reviewed,' Sultan Ibrahim said, adding that if procurement is done at 'middlemen prices', then no government allocation will ever be enough. 'Therefore, do not try to fool me. If you do not want to heed my advice, I will not speak up again,' said His Majesty. Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, Khaled said his ministry will continue to prioritise the readiness of the armed forces in line with His Majesty's exhortation, with moves such as modernising defence assets, including those used by RGK. 'To all members and veterans of the regiment, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on its 60th anniversary,' he said.
