Brendan Donovan leaves Cardinals' loss early with toe discomfort

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals utilityman Brendan Donovan left Tuesday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with left toe discomfort.
Donovan, who has mainly played second base this season but was the leftfielder on Tuesday, left the game after striking out on a nine-pitch at-bat in the eighth inning in the Cardinals' 10-9 loss.

'It's kind of the joint in his big toe,' Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. 'You can see that last at-bat, he couldn't even get off his backside there. It was hurting him pretty bad so we took him out.'
Donovan received treatment but did not have an x-ray after the game. He is considered day to day.
'I was running around in the outfield, and it just started bugging me, and then it kind of just got progressively worse, and then it just got real grumpy at me,' Donovan said.
Donovan said that there wasn't one moment that he hurt it, that it was more of a repetitive use injury.
'It's on my left foot, so kind of that foot that I tend to rotate off of,' Donovan said. 'I think that's kind of what led to me coming out of the game. … Just kind of sleep on it, reevaluate it tomorrow, and then go from there.'

It would be a blow to the Cardinals if Donovan misses any time. Donovan won a Gold Glove as a rookie in 2022 and is putting together his best season at the plate hitting .310 with four home runs and 26 RBIs as the No. 3 batter in the St. Louis order.
'Donny's a big part of what we're about here,' Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas said. 'You know, the way he can move around the diamond and obviously, you know, be a really consistent anchor in that lineup as far as driving the ball and getting on base and driving runs in. You know, that's a bridge we'd have to cross if that happens.'

The Brewers opened the sixth with back-to-back singles before taking the lead on Contreras' sac fly that brought Fedde's day to an end. The Brewers scored once more in the inning when Christian Yelich reached on a fielder's choice. Peralta is 4-0 with a 1.09 ERA in seven home starts this season. Milwaukee is 6-1 in those contests. Oregon State opens College World Series with 4-3 walk-off win over Louisville
OMAHA, Neb. -- Aiva Arquette scored from first base on Gavin Turley's drive into the left-field corner in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Oregon State a 4-3 walk-off victory over Louisville in the College World Series on Friday night. The Cardinals had tied it with two runs in the top half before Oregon State recorded its fourth walk-off win of the season and second in four games. The No. 8 national seed Beavers (48-14-1), back in Omaha for the first time since they won the national title in 2018, will play Coastal Carolina on Sunday after the Cardinals (40-22) meet Arizona in an elimination game. Arquette, a projected first-round pick in the MLB amateur draft next month, was having a rough night in the field before delivering his third base hit of the game with one out in the ninth. Turley then sent the first pitch from Jake Schweitzer (4-2) on a line into the corner. Left fielder Zion Rose tried to cut the ball off but couldn't come up with it, allowing Arquette to be waved home. 'It was cool because it's the same thing every at-bat for us — go up and compete and hit the ball hard,' Turley said. 'Knowing we had the top of the lineup up, I knew we had a chance to do something dangerous.' Turley was drenched with a bucket of sports drink during the on-field celebration. In the Beavers' super regional opener last week, Turley scored the winning run on AJ Singer's walk-off single in a 5-4, 10-inning win over Florida State. Louisville was left to regroup. Oregon State starter Dax Whitney was nearly untouchable the first two times through Louisville's order. The 6-foot-5 right-hander from Blackfoot, Idaho, finished with nine strikeouts and left with one out in the sixth and two runners on base. Louisville starter Patrick Forbes matched zeroes with Whitney through three innings, fanning five of the first nine he faced. He finished with 10 strikeouts and was replaced by Justin West with bases loaded in the sixth after he issued his only walk. West ended the inning with two strikeouts, but not before Canon Reeder made it 3-1 when Alicea couldn't pick up his sharply hit grounder. Oregon State traditionally has not done things the easy way in the CWS. The Beavers lost their openers in five of their previous seven appearances. Royce Lewis' injury woes continue with another hamstring strain
HOUSTON (AP) — Minnesota third baseman Royce Lewis strained his left hamstring in the ninth inning of the Twins' loss to Houston on Friday night. Lewis pulled up as he was running to first base on a single in the ninth and was replaced by a pinch-runner. Manager Rocco Baldelli said after the game that he strained his hamstring but that they didn't know how severe the injury was. 'He actually tested relatively well after the game upon examination in the training room,' Baldelli said. 'We're going to bring him in tomorrow and check him out, see how he comes in. A lot of the times you learn a lot just by how the guy shows up the next day, how he can move around, what he's capable of doing. That will tell us a lot, and then we'll be able to make a decision of some kind as far as the next step one way or the other.' The injury comes after he missed the first 35 games of the season with a moderate strain of the same hamstring that occurred running out a ground ball in spring training. Lewis, the first overall pick in the 2017 draft, has been plagued by injuries in his career. He played just 82 games last season while missing time with a severe quadriceps strain and a groin injury. Those injuries came after he tore the ACL in his right knee in both 2021 and 2022. Lewis, who homered Friday night, is hitting .202 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 30 games this season. ___ AP MLB:
