Red alert, holiday for schools in Kozhikode and Wayanad on May 26

Kozhikode and Wayanad have been put on red alert for Monday (May 26) and Tuesday (May 27) as rain continues to wreak havoc in many parts of these districts. The district collectors have also declared a holiday for educational institutions on Monday, while the day-off does not apply to prior scheduled examinations such as the university exams and tests conducted by the Kerala Public Service Commission.
Meanwhile, one person died when an uprooted coconut tree fell on his moving scooter due to heavy rain and wind near Villiappally near Vadakara in Kozhikode on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Pavithran, 64, of Kunnumayintavida Meethal in Villiappally. Pavithran was seriously injured in the accident that took place around 11 a.m. on Sunday. Though he was shifted to the district hospital in Vadakara, his life could not be saved.
In another incident, two children were electrocuted at Kodenchery in Thamarassery Taluk. Nidhin Biju, 13, and Ivin Biju, 11, sons of Biju Chandrankunnel, were fishing in a canal when an electric wire broke off the post and fell into the canal.
Due to heavy rains in the upland region of Kozhikode district, nine families of Manjacheeli in Vilangad village have been shifted to safer locations. The group, including 13 men, 12 women, and 11 children, have been moved to the rehabilitation camp set up at St. George High School, Vilangad. Manjacheeli had faced massive landslides on July 31, 2024, the same day the landslides hit Mundakkai and Chooralmala in Wayanad.
Four families have been shifted to safety at Kavilumpara in Vadakara Taluk after the sides of a canal collapsed. A car was damaged at Mavoor when the compound wall of an auditorium collapsed over it.
People residing on the banks of Korappuzha have been asked to stay alert and be ready to evacuate if the authorities demand to do so, due to the rising water level in the river. Public have been warned against entering or crossing the river.
The people living in coastal areas have also been asked to stay alert and stay away from dangerous places. The fishing community has been asked to stay alert, refrain from taking small boats into the sea, to keep them anchored in the harbour at a safe distance to avoid them banging against each other. All visits to beaches have been banned.
Wayanad
Most grama panchayats in Wayanad district have set up 24-hour control rooms. Tourist spots in the red zone have been closed. District Collector D.R. Meghashree called upon the public to avoid unnecessary travel and to be extremely careful if travelling through upland regions in emergency situations.
The secretary of the Vythiri grama panchayat has urged the public to cut down or crop tree branches that pose a threat to public safety. Any damage caused by such tree branches will lead to punishment of the owner under Section 30 (2-v) of the Disaster Management Act. In the case of trees like Teak and Rosewood that have been reserved for the government, the prescribed guidelines have to be followed.

GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Wednesday held a high-level meeting with senior state government officials to take stock of the situation in landslide-hit Mangan district. Three army personnel were killed and six soldiers went missing after a landslide hit a military camp at Chaten. Several others were also injured. The landslide, which occurred at 7 pm on Sunday near Lachen town in Mangan district, was triggered by heavy rainfall in the area. "Today, I convened a high-level meeting with the chief secretary and senior officials from the Planning and Land & Revenue Departments to take stock of the concerning situation in Mangan district," he said in a social media post. "What is unfolding is truly heartbreaking. Our people are facing immense hardship due to this natural calamity and my heart goes out to every family affected," he said referring to large-scale destruction of road infrastructure due to landslides triggered by heavy rain in Mangan district. The chief minister said that he has directed all departments to act swiftly and in close coordination with the NDRF, SDRF, BRO, TAAS, and other agencies concerned to ensure that rescue and relief operations are carried out without delay. "Every possible effort is being made to reach those in need," he said. Tamang urged all residents and tourists not to panic as the state government is doing everything within its power to manage the situation and protect lives. "We are with you at every step, and we will not rest until safety and normalcy are restored," he said, while appealing for unity, strength, and cooperation from everyone. "Let us stand together as one family, and we will overcome this challenge with courage and compassion," he said. The state government has already declared the damage caused by incessant rainfall in Mangan district since May 28 as a "disaster" under Section 22(2)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, according to an official statement. The declaration was issued by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) and the Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department.

We remain firmly committed to supporting the people of Sikkim in this challenging time,' Scindia posted on X. Earlier on Tuesday, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who spoke with him to take stock of the situation caused by heavy rainfall and floods in the region and assured all help and support from the Centre. In response to the ongoing flood situation under Operation Jal Rahat II, the Assam Rifles has continued its relentless humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) efforts across the states of Manipur and Tripura. A total of ten columns have been actively deployed by Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) and Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) to conduct rescue, relief, and medical aid operations. One additional column remains on standby at Haflong for rapid deployment if required, Assam Rifles said in a release. On Monday, Manipur Fire Service, Assam Rifles, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Indian Army conducted joint evacuation operations to rescue stranded medical students and staff from the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal, following severe waterlogging triggered by heavy rainfall. On May 31, several areas in Imphal experienced flood-like conditions due to persistent rainfall and subsequent waterlogging. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke on Tuesday with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla to review the flood situation in the northeastern region. The Prime Minister assured full support from the Central Government. Sharing an update on X, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, 'A short while ago, Prime Minister @narendramodi ji called me to enquire about the current flood situation in Assam. I briefed him on how continuous rainfall in Assam and adjoining states has led to flooding and impacted many lives. I also apprised him of the relief operation undertaken by the state government.' He added, 'The PM expressed concern and assured full support from the Central Government for our relief and rehabilitation efforts.
