Repugnant remarks against flight crash victim: Arrested Kerala official likely to lose job

KASARGOD: Breaching all standards of civility, a government official took to social media, hurling obscene and casteist remarks to malign the Malayali nurse who lost her life in the Ahmedabad air crash. A Pavithran, a junior superintendent with the revenue department, is now under arrest, and his dismissal from service seems imminent. Kasaragod District Collector Imbasekar K on Friday recommended to the government Pavithran's dismissal from service, citing his history as a habitual offender. Despite several warnings, punishments and granting opportunities for correcting his actions, Pavithran of the Vellarikundu taluk office refused to reform and continued with his misdeeds, 'bringing disrepute to the revenue department and the government,' the collector said in his report. Hosdurg police arrested Pavithran from his office. A case has been registered against him under non-bailable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Sections 196, 75, and 67A) and the IT Act. A medical examination proved that he was intoxicated while on duty at the time of the arrest, police said. Pavithran sparked outrage after posting his remark under a Facebook condolence post for Ranjitha G Nair. Though he deleted the comment following intense backlash, screenshots had already gone viral, triggering widespread anger on social media. Despicable act, says minister Revenue Minister K Rajan intervened and ordered Pavithran's immediate suspension. 'Such a despicable act is unbecoming of a government employee. An immediate suspension order was issued once this came to my notice,' the minister said in a Facebook post. There have been several past disciplinary proceedings against Pavithran. In August 2023, the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) issued a formal warning against him after a complaint was lodged by the president of Nellikattu Shrimad Paramashiva Vishwakarma Temple, alleging defamatory posts on social media. In February 2024, he received another stern warning following a complaint by Kasaragod native V Bhuvanachandran, who accused Pavithran of defamation through social media posts. Despite the reprimands, Pavithran continued his misconduct. Last September, he was suspended for posting casteist remarks against former minister and Kanhangad MLA E Chandrasekharan on FB. Though disciplinary proceedings followed, the matter was later settled with censure. Pavithran was reinstated on November 7.

Kerala govt employee suspended for offensive remarks on plane crash victim

KASARGOD: A. Pavithran, Junior Superintendent at Vellarikundu Taluk office, has been suspended from service after posting an obscene comment on social media about Ranjitha R Nair, a Malayali woman who lost her life in the recent Ahmedabad plane crash. The incident came to light when Pavithran left a derogatory remark beneath a condolence post for the victim on Facebook. The post triggered public outrage and widespread protests across social media platforms. Following this, Revenue Minister K Rajan intervened and directed Kasaragod District Collector Imbasekar K to immediately suspend the official. 'A Pavithran, Junior Superintendent of Vellarikundu Taluk, has been suspended for posting an abusive comment targeting Ranjitha R. Nair, who died in a tragic plane crash. Such a despicable act is unbecoming of a government employee. An immediate suspension order was issued once this came to my attention,' the minister stated in a Facebook post. This is not the first time Pavithran has faced disciplinary action. He was previously suspended in September 2024 for an abusive post against former minister and MLA E Chandrasekaran. That suspension was lifted just a month ago. Despite deleting the offensive comment following the public backlash, Pavithran now faces growing demands for his permanent dismissal from government service.

Kerala taluk officer suspended for casteist slur at nurse killed in Air India crash

A junior superintendent at a government taluk office in Kerala's Kasaragod district was on Friday suspended for making disparaging and casteist comments about the Malayali nurse who was killed in Thursday's Air India mishap in Ahmedabad. Revenue minister K Rajan said he ordered the immediate suspension of A Pavithran from service after being told about the latter's 'insulting comments' on Facebook about Ranjitha G Nair, the Pullad-native nurse who was among the casualties in the AI-171 crash. 'This is a despicable act on the part of the deputy tahsildar,' the minister said. Pavithran worked as a deputy tehsildar at the Vellarikund taluk office in Kasaragod. Following the incident, it came to light that Pavithran was a repeat offender, after he was suspended by Kasaragod collector K Inbasekar in September last year for making casteist slurs at former minister and current Kanhangad MLA E Chandrasekharan. Several complaints had been filed against the junior superintendent with the collector's office. Ranjitha (42) had arrived in Kerala earlier this week on leave from the UK where she worked as a nurse. Family members and those close to her shared that she had got a job with the state health service in Kerala and planned to return home from the UK after completing her job contract there. Her new home in Pullad was also under construction. She is survived by her husband Vineesh, two minor children and her mother. Authorities in Kerala confirmed Ranjitha's death in the chilling Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad.

Kerala Revenue official suspended over defamatory remarks against Ahmedabad air crash victim Renjitha

The Kerala government on Friday (June 13, 2025) suspended a Revenue department official on the charge of making defamatory remarks against Renjitha G. Nair, the Malayali nurse who died in the Ahmedabad air crash on Thursday (June 12, 2025). In a statement, Revenue Minister K. Rajan said that social media posts by A. Pavithran, a junior superintendent attached to the Vellarikundu taluk office in Kasaragod district, were 'mean, spiteful, and cruel.' He promised immediate disciplinary action. Consequently, Kasaragod District Collector K. Inbasekar suspended Mr. Pavithran on Mr. Rajan's orders, pending inquiry. Public outrage Mr. Pavithran's post about the single mother who died in the mishap while returning to her workplace in London after a brief holiday with her two young daughters and ailing mother caused an outpouring of public outrage, which resonated across the conventional and social media. A preliminary government inquiry found Mr. Pavithran had slandered Renjitha on casteist lines and also demeaned the latter in prurient terms. Pavithran later apologises Health Minister Veena George, who called on Renjitha's mother and children in Pathanamthitta, expressed shock at the condemnable social media posts and promised immediate action. Mr. Pavithran later apologised and withdrew the controversial post. A senior official stated that the police were likely to book the official on charges of social media abuse under the provisions of the BNS and the IT Act.
