Megalodon Tooth Millions of Years Old Found in Florida (Video)

Call me crazy, uneducated, or what-have-you, but I thought the ancient Megalodon shark was just a myth. A fabled creature, akin to the kraken, trumpeted by Shark Week and other fear-mongering media, to entice viewers with shock and awe into their programming. Alas, I was wrong. Recently, a diver off the Gulf Coast of Florida made the find of a lifetime, discovering a six-inch tooth from the early Miocene to early Pliocene epochs, ranging from 23 to 3.6 million years ago. It was so rare, shark experts called it: 'Like winning the lottery. One chance in a million or more.' 'We were really close to the ground,' said Kristina Scott, who found the tooth while diving off Venice in Sarasota County with her boyfriend. 'I saw just the root of it, covered in barnacle. I knew the shape. And I pulled it out of the dirt, and started freaking out. I pulled his [her boyfriend's] arm. I was trying to yell with the regulator in my mouth. But yeah, we were just stoked.'When compared to other shark teeth, this megalodon fang makes modern sharks look like sardines. But how big, exactly, were these ancient behemoths. Well, there's only fossil records to go off, but scientists have some ideas. According to a Smithsonian report on the carcharocles megalodon: 'Carcharocles megalodon was once the most fearsome predator to reign the seas. This ancient shark lived roughly 23 to 3.6 million years ago in nearly every corner of the ocean. Roughly up to 3 times the length of a modern-day great white shark, it is the largest shark to have ever lived. It had a powerful bite with a jaw full of teeth as large as an adult human's hand. They likely could tear chunks of flesh from even the largest whales of the time. It should come as no surprise that upon discovery in the fossil record, the massive shark was named Carcharocles megalodon or 'big toothed glorious shark.'' As for the rarity (and potential price tag) of such a find from the diver in Florida – as in, could she cash in on it? – the newscasters could only fathom: 'From our understanding, this is, like, museum-quality stuff…it's a big deal.'Megalodon Tooth Millions of Years Old Found in Florida (Video) first appeared on Surfer on Jun 2, 2025

Pittsburgh Pride 2025 begins with over 300 vendors, multiple show headliners

As the calendar turns to June, the streets of Pittsburgh are preparing to celebrate Pride. With large parts of the city under construction, the festivities will look a bit different this year. Pittsburgh Pride 2025 officially began in the city on Friday. More than 300 vendors, two main headliners, a prom, a march through the city and two days packed with festivities will make for a busy weekend. For Ryley Dascola, this weekend will be his first Pittsburgh Pride. He will be joined by his two best friends, one of whom traveled from Nebraska. They are ready to celebrate everything Pride. 'I am looking forward to spending it with friends who are here and just seeing all my favorite queens,' Dascola said. Organizers said this will be the biggest Pittsburgh Pride weekend so far. Pride Director Dena Stanley said festivities kick off in Oakland with The Gay Prom and, while not an official pride event, Ryley and hundreds more attended the All Out Music Festival at Stage AE. 'We have 330 vendors. It's the most we've ever had. We have 70 local artists and we have two headliners: David Archuleta and Lil Moe,' said Stanley. The two-day festival held at the Allegheny Commons Park will host two headline shows. Archuleta plays on Saturday and Lil Moe performs on Sunday. Ru Paul's 'William' will also perform. 'This is like a recharge moment for our community, we have to do this because of what's about to come and what is already happening, how the erasure is happening, especially for trans individuals,' said Stanley. At 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, the Pride Parade will march from Liberty to 11th Downtown, across the Andy Warhol Bridge and into Allegheny Commons. Stanley anticipates more than 180,000 people will participate in the parade and says the march is an important sign of unity in the face of adversity. 'This year, unfortunately, we had a lot of corporate sponsors pull out because of the political climate that we are in, but we still pulled it off.l We are still making it happen. This is what resilience looks like,' Stanley said. Participants like Dascola agree, saying it is bigger than the celebration. 'We've got to make sure we got to get out. We've got to vote,' Dascola said. Click here for more details on this weekend's Pride events. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Pittsburgh Steelers veterans, rookies come together for 2025 OTAs

The weather has felt more like October than May, but the Pittsburgh Steelers have made the most of Mother Nature during Organized Team Activities. The week of voluntary sessions does not always see tremendous attendance, but there was a noticeable veteran presence at practice. Many of them say there's a lot of value in being there for mentorship and to shake the offseason rust. Advertisement 'We've got a lot of new stuff that we're doing, a lot people in different places, a lot of new schemes. So, it's definitely exciting to be here right now,' said Patrick Queen. One of the new faces is cornerback Darius Slay. He is entering his 13th season but says he still sees OTAs as an opportunity to get back to fundamentals and learn more about his new teammates. That includes establishing his role as a mentor to younger ones, like Joey Porter Jr and Beanie Bishop. 'Everybody has different stories, different mindsets. I just try to be an open book. Just absorb what they're talking about and give them information on what I've been through or how I got to this point. And they ask questions. That's the great thing about them,' said Slay. Slay said his new relationships are progressing quickly. Some of the younger players are planning to join him in Houston for workouts this summer. Advertisement While guys like Slay and Cam Heyward are natural leaders for the team, others like Alex Highsmith are growing into more prominent leadership roles. 'Just to really influence young guys and show them the way of what it takes. When I got here as a rookie, I had TJ and Bud and Cam, having veterans like that in my room really helped me to progress in my career. I just want to do what I can to help the young guys progress in their careers as well,' said Highsmith. Multiple players confirm that T.J. Watt was not at practice this week. He is due for a new contract. Highsmith said he knows Watt wants to be there and believes a new deal will happen for his counterpart. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts.
