Taiwan raids Chinese firms over chip industry secrets theft

TAIPEI: Taiwanese investigators have raided 16 Chinese-funded companies suspected of illegally poaching high-tech talent to steal secrets from the island's semiconductor industry. Taiwan dominates global chip manufacturing, producing over half of the world's chips and nearly all high-end semiconductors. China is aggressively developing advanced chips for AI systems while facing US export restrictions. Hundreds of officials searched 70 locations and questioned 120 people between July 15 and August 6, according to Taiwan's Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau. No charges have been filed yet, but the probe is ongoing, said a bureau investigator surnamed Gu, who noted similar investigations occur around 25 to 30 times annually. The Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office stated that illegal mainland-funded firms had been stealing Taiwan's high-tech secrets through talent poaching. Targeted companies allegedly used 'diverse and highly harmful infiltration methods,' authorities revealed. Among the raided firms were Goertek, a key Apple supplier, and US-listed VNET Group. Taiwan has repeatedly accused China of espionage, while Beijing claims the island as its territory and threatens force to reclaim it. Earlier this year, Taiwan blacklisted Huawei and SMIC, restricting exports of advanced chip technology to China. Local firms must now seek government approval before shipping high-tech products to blacklisted entities like Huawei or SMIC. In March, Taiwan's Investigation Bureau confirmed probes into SMIC and other Chinese firms over suspected illegal talent recruitment. – AFP

Modi stands firm on India agriculture amid US tariff dispute

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared India would not yield on agricultural protections following new US tariffs. The US announced 50% levies on Indian goods, citing New Delhi's Russian oil purchases as a factor. Trade tensions centre on Washington's push for access to India's agricultural and dairy markets. Modi emphasised safeguarding farmers and dairy workers, calling them non-negotiable priorities. 'I know I will have to pay a personal price for this, but I am ready for it,' Modi stated in New Delhi. India also maintains bans on genetically modified imports due to domestic concerns. Dairy imports face resistance over cultural and religious sentiments tied to cows in Hindu-majority India. The dispute contrasts with earlier optimism over US-India trade relations under Trump. Trump previously praised Modi as a 'tougher negotiator' during a Washington visit. The US views India as a strategic counterbalance to China in South Asia. Modi may visit China in late August, his first since 2018, according to unconfirmed reports. – AFP

Indonesia's copper export to the US gets zero tariff

JAKARTA: Investment and Downstreaming Minister Rosan Roeslani confirmed that Indonesian copper will be subject to a zero-per cent import tariff in the United States, while negotiations continue to expand this exemption to other commodities, reported Antara news agency. "For copper, we get a 0 per cent tariff," Roeslani stated during the 2025 Indonesia-Japan Executive Dialogue here on Wednesday (Aug 6). The minister stated that Indonesia is still negotiating with the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to reduce import tariffs for other commodities, such as nickel and palm oil, and he expressed optimism about achieving favourable results for Indonesia. "We are negotiating (the tariff reduction) for other commodities. So far, we got (zero tariff) for copper, and other commodities such as nickel are likely to be approved, even if not at zero per cent, but at least lower than the current 19 per cent tariff," he remarked. According to Roeslani, Indonesia is also seeking a tariff-free status for other commodities that are not produced in the United States. Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that Indonesia is seeking tariff reductions on commodities including crude palm oil, rubber, shorea wood, and copper derivatives. In the latest Indonesia-US trade agreement in July, the US administration agreed to reduce the tariff, which was initially set at 32 per cent by President Donald Trump last April, to 19 per cent. In exchange, Indonesia has committed to purchasing US$15 billion in US energy products and US$4.5 billion in US agricultural products, according to the US president on July 16. Indonesia also intends to purchase 50 Boeing jets, mostly Boeing 777 passenger jets, Trump stated. No details were provided regarding which Indonesian parties would purchase the Boeing jets. - Bernama-Antara
