India A are set to take on England Lions in their first unofficial Test match from May 30. Two of India's first-team Test players, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Kumar Reddy, will be playing the match to prepare for India's 5-match tour of England, set to start from June 20.Apart from Jaiswal and Nitish, who, of course, headline the clash, a host of players with Test aspirations will be featuring in the 2-match series against England Lions before the main Indian squad arrives in England. Bengal cricketer Abhimanyu Easwaran will be captaining the side, and he will have the likes of Dhruv Jurel, Karun Nair, Akash Deep, and Shardul Thakur for support.advertisementThe tour games will be incredibly important for two of the returning stars in the Indian team – Shardul and Karun, who have been given a breath of fresh life in the Indian team. Both Shardul and Karun had strong domestic seasons and impressed in several games in the Indian Premier League as well. Expectations will be high for them as the Indian team takes a step forward from the legacies of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who retired a month and a half before the start of the series.
From England's perspective, they will be monitoring the fitness of Jordan Cox after he was ruled out of the recent one-off Test against Zimbabwe with an abdominal muscle injury. The 21-year-old James Rew is the Lions' skipper, and he is having a wonderful run in this year's County Championship, averaging 55. Test regulars spinner Rehan Ahmed and all-rounder Chris Woakes are also part of the Lions squad, and the pair hitting some early form is crucial for England.England Lions vs India A: SquadsadvertisementIndia A: Abhimanyu Easwaran (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurel (VC) (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shardul Thakur, Ishan Kishan (WK), Manav Suthar, Tanush Kotian, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep, Harshit Rana, Anshul Kamboj, Khaleel Ahmed, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sarfaraz Khan, Tushar Deshpande, Harsh Dubey.England Lions: James Rew (captain), Farhan Ahmed, Rehan Ahmed, Sonny Baker, Jordan Cox, Rocky Flintoff, Emilio Gay, Tom Haines, George Hill, Josh Hull, Eddie Jack, Ben McKinney, Dan Mousley, Ajeet Singh Dale, Chris Woakes, Max Holden.England Lions vs India A: Match DetailsThe England Lions vs India A 1st unofficial Test match will be played from May 30 to June 2. 'I Am Always Under Pressure...': Gautam Gambhir Goes Unfiltered On Coaching Career

Last Updated: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has spoken about the constant pressure he faces, stressing the importance of performance before the England tour. India head coach Gautam Gambhir has said that he is always under pressure irrespective of the results of the team, adding that as a coach, he always wants results, and the fact that things might go the other way keeps him on his toes throughout. The start of Gambhir 's career as India's head coach was tumultuous. He lost an ODI series against Sri Lanka, was whitewashed at home in a Test series against New Zealand and that followed the 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Although the Champions Trophy triumph came next, a lot of eyes will be on Gambhir's coaching and eventual results on India's upcoming tour of England. 'I am always under pressure irrespective of whether we got the results or not. If you had asked me this question after New Zealand (series), I would have said 'yes, I am under pressure'," Gambhir said at the pre-departure press conference. 'After Australia (tour), I would have said 'yes, I am under pressure'. After the Champions Trophy, I am still under pressure because me being the coach, you always want the results," Gambhir added. The India head coach will be under pressure, especially with the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli within a few days last month, the burden of guiding a bunch led by Shubman Gill, as well as the Jasprit Bumrah factor, given that the ace pacer wouldn't be able to play all Tests. Gambhir hinted that Bumrah's sequence of appearances will depend a lot on how India is positioned in the series. 'We want to discuss with him, and it depends on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series as well, as to where it is heading. That is something which I am very well aware of as well," Gambhir said. The India head coach said that Karun Nair's experience of playing in the County circuit and his recent form will come in handy for the Indian side in England. 'It's always good to have the experience of Karun, who has played a bit of County cricket as well. He is in really good form. He scored a double hundred for India A," Gambhir said. India will play the first Test against England at Leeds from June 20. First Published: June 05, 2025, 22:32 IST

England Hope To Have Jofra Archer Back Against India After Lengthy Lay-Off

England fast bowler Jofra Archer could make his long-awaited Test return as soon as next month's second match against India, selector Luke Wright said on Thursday. A 14-man squad will travel to Headingley for the first of a five-match series, with Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Jamie Overton and Jacob Bethell all included after missing England's rout of Zimbabwe in a one-off Test at Trent Bridge last month. Archer was not considered for the first Test against India due to a broken thumb suffered while fielding in the Indian Premier League. It was the latest in a long line of injuries -- mainly to his elbow and back -- that have kept him out of Test action for more than four years. Despite his lengthy absence from red-ball internationals, express quick Archer is still regarded as a potential match-winner when England look to regain the Ashes in Australia during a 2025/26 tour. England now have a plan to get Archer ready for the second Test against India at Edgbaston in early July that would see the Barbados-born 30-year-old featuring for Sussex's 2nd XI followed by a County Championship game against Durham starting on June 22. If Archer comes through both matches with a clean bill of health, he could yet add to his tally of 13 Test caps after launching his international career in spectacular style in 2019 when he helped England win the 50-over World Cup and starred in a drawn Ashes series. "If things go well, he should be available for the second Test," Wright told reporters. "He's got to keep ticking off every day and getting no sort of setbacks, but if all goes well and Jofra gets through that Durham game, then he's available potentially for selection for that second Test. "We'll watch him in that game for Sussex and see where he's at. He's such a talent, it doesn't take him too long to get up to speed." England, with Gus Atkinson absent following a hamstring strain sustained during the Zimbabwe game, are expected to opt for a pace attack of Carse, Woakes and Josh Tongue in the first Test against India.
