Zhipu challenges OpenAI with upcoming GLM-4.5 open-source model, launch likely next week
According to a Bloomberg report, the release of the LLM model is expected as soon as Monday. GLM-4.5 will serve as an upgrade to the firm's existing flagship model, as Zhipu attempts to position itself as a serious contender in the global AI landscape.
The company has not responded to media enquiries regarding the release timeline or technical details of the new model.
Zhipu's move reflects a broader trend in China's AI sector, where multiple firms are pivoting towards open-source strategies. Moonshot recently unveiled its Kimi K2 model to the public, while StepFun released a non-proprietary version of its own reasoning system. The open-source approach is increasingly seen as a method to drive adoption and influence global AI standards, especially as Western competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic continue to expand.
Separately, the Chinese tech giant is reportedly re-evaluating its listing strategy. Bloomberg News reported earlier this month that the firm is considering moving its planned initial public offering from mainland China to Hong Kong. The potential shift, if executed, could raise up to $300 million and is said to be in collaboration with financial advisers. Zhipu counts Chinese tech giants Alibaba and Tencent among its investors.
The announcement of GLM-4.5 follows a period of intensified activity among Chinese AI startups, many of which are seeking both market visibility and credibility in a sector dominated by American firms. The release of more powerful and accessible models is likely to add momentum to the competition, both within China and internationally.

APSRTC urged to replace outdated ticketing machines before free bus travel scheme rollout
Vijayawada: AP public transport dept (RTC) employees have urged the govt to replace the outdated unified ticketing system machines ahead of rolling out the free bus travel scheme for women passengers in govt-run buses from Aug 15 in the state. They said the existing ticket issuing machines (TIMS), which are over three years old, are creating manifold problems for conductors while issuing tickets, with issues like inadequate battery backup, hardware/motherboard problems, and touch screen issues. The bus conductors, in many instances, are forced to issue manual tickets to passengers as the substandard paper roll and ink quantity supplied to TIMS machines do not give properly printed tickets. APSRTC has around 14,000 TIMS devices procured from E-Bix, a Chinese firm, for which the govt pays a monthly rent of Rs 680 for each device. "The govt plans to roll out the free bus travel scheme for women across the state from Aug 15. Following the launch of the scheme, APSRTC buses will see more number of passengers, particularly women. Codelco Finds Human Remains in Blow to Chile Mine Rescue Efforts
(Bloomberg) -- Codelco found human remains during its efforts to reach five workers trapped underground in a central Chilean copper mine, dealing a blow to the state-controlled company's rescue efforts. Just hours after telling reporters that there was a chance the workers would be found safe in a collapsed tunnel at the El Teniente mine, a Codelco official said authorities and families of the trapped workers had been informed of the discovery of remains that haven't yet been identified. 'This discovery fills us with sadness, but it also shows us that we are in the right place, that the strategy followed led us to them,' said Andrés Music, who heads the operations for the mine, which is located south of Santiago. 'We will continue working with all our strength and hope but now with greater caution, which could mean that progress will be slower,' he said about the rescue efforts. The world's biggest copper supplier halted production at the site after a collapse attributed to seismic activity on Thursday trapped workers in a new section of the mine, called Andesita. One person had been confirmed dead and nine others were injured in the incident, the latest setback for Codelco's efforts to recover from a years-long output slump. A 100-person team — including some of those who helped rescue 33 workers trapped in another Chilean mine in 2010 — has been working on the El Teniente rescue effort. India will continue to buy Russian oil, government sources tell NYT
India will keep purchasing oil from Russia despite U.S. President Donald Trump's threats of penalties, two Government sources told The New York Times, not wishing to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter. "These are long-term oil contracts," one of the sources said. "It is not so simple to just stop buying overnight." Mr. Trump last month indicated in a Truth Social post that India would face additional penalties for purchases of Russian arms and oil. On Friday (August 1, 2025), Mr. Trump told reporters that he had heard that India would no longer be buying oil from Russia. Reuters reported this week that Indian state refiners stopped buying Russian oil in the past week, following a narrowing of discounts in July. "On our energy sourcing requirements ... we look at what is there available in the markets, what is there on offer, and also what is the prevailing global situation or circumstances," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters during a regular briefing on Friday.
