2nd phase of Chinese-led schistosomiasis control project completed in Tanzania's Zanzibar
DAR ES SALAAM, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The baseline survey in the pilot area on Unguja Island in Tanzania's Zanzibar for the second phase of the Chinese-coordinated technical assistance project on schistosomiasis control was completed on Sunday. Dai Yang, leader of the schistosomiasis control project group, told Xinhua on Monday that since May, the project team has surveyed schistosomiasis infection rates among residents in three communities of Kinyasini, Kikobweni, and Chaani Masingini. Dai said the baseline assessments across all three locations have concluded, with more than 1,500 individuals examined and the overall infection rate recorded at about 5 percent. This second phase will move forward with the implementation of comprehensive control strategies in Unguja's pilot areas, including disease detection, snail control, and the integration of Chinese expertise to support the island's schistosomiasis elimination efforts, Dai said. "Our staff are experienced in schistosomiasis control, but they lack familiarity with tools like GPS (Global Positioning System) and database software, so dedicated training is essential," said Shaali Ame, program manager for neglected tropical diseases at Zanzibar's Ministry of Health. "Through year-round on-site collaboration, consistent standards, and joint problem-solving, this deep integration has not only built trust in the Chinese model but also encouraged locally adapted innovation, greatly enhancing the effectiveness of technology transfer," said Ali, a field staff member on Unguja Island.

Hadi's swift recovery after heart procedure exceeds expectations, reports Menteri Besar
KUALA TERENGGANU, 23 June — The health condition of PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, who recently underwent a medical procedure at the National Heart Institute (IJN), is showing highly positive signs of recovery. Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said medical specialists treating the Marang MP described his recovery process as unusually swift and exceeding expectations. 'Alhamdulillah, I visited him and was genuinely pleased to see how smoothly the procedure went. His recovery has been remarkably fast. Insya-Allah, he will be able to return to work soon,' he told reporters after officiating the 2025 East Coast Energy (ECE) Conference at the Islamic Civilisation Park Convention Centre here. The Yang Dipertuan Muda of Terengganu, Tengku Muhammad Ismail Sultan Mizan, officiated the two-day ECE 2025 Conference, which began today. When asked why details about Abdul Hadi's treatment and its location were not made public before, Ahmad Samsuri explained that it was a precautionary decision due to the leader's age and condition, which necessitated limiting visitors. 'We must understand that in such circumstances, if we disclose where he is, people will naturally want to visit. If we deny them, feelings may be hurt. But considering Tuan Guru Abdul Hadi's age and health, we have to minimise any risks that could disrupt his treatment,' he added. — Bernama
