As early as Tuesday night, the New York Yankees could unveil a new infield alignment featuring two-time batting champion DJ LeMahieu at second base and former All-Star slugger Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third base.

Where might Tampa Bay Rays veteran Brandon Lowe eventually fit into the equation? Great question.
ESPN's Jeff Passan suggested the Yankees, who own a 5.5-game lead in the AL East, should pursue Lowe via trade ahead of the July 31 deadline. Lowe, a 2019 All-Star selection and reliable veteran bat, is hitting .242 with 11 homers, 31 RBI, and a .725 OPS for the inconsistent Rays.
Lowe would theoretically replace LeMahieu at second base. Chisholm previously played second before suffering an oblique injury at the end of April; the Yankees could reportedly activate him before Tuesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians.
"Lowe's career numbers at Yankee Stadium are admittedly abysmal," Passan noted, "but his left-handed stroke and the short porch in right field feel like a match made in heaven."

Indeed, Lowe has mustered just a .175 average with eight home runs and a .655 OPS in 39 games at Yankee Stadium.

Although the Yankees need another infielder, Lowe doesn't make the most sense right now. The Yankees already have a logjam at second base, which prompted Chisholm's move to third despite him implying he wanted to avoid a position change.
Unlike Chisholm and LeMahieu, though, Lowe has never played third base. He's only manned second base this year, outside of two starts at DH, and his corner outfield days appear behind him.
Lowe also likely won't come cheap compared to other infield trade targets. He turns 31 on July 6 and has a $11.5 million club option for 2026.
Barring further injuries, the Yankees can find a better fit than Lowe. Manager Aaron Boone appears committed to keeping LeMahieu in the lineup, and the club remains all-in on Chisholm despite a propensity for strikeouts.

That's not to say the 30-29 Rays shouldn't consider trading Lowe if they wave the white flag and pivot to 2026. However, a Lowe-Yankees partnership doesn't make sense right now, unless the Yankees intend to totally revamp their lineup.

Here's how the Athletic viewed Kelly, who was signed after the Cubs had seen their other targets, Travis d'Arnaud (Angels) and Danny Jansen (Rays) sign elsewhere: 'Kelly figures to be a co-starter with young catcher Miguel Amaya as the Cubs try to upgrade a position group that was among the worst in the game for parts of last season. Amaya made significant in-season adjustments, though, hitting .271 with a .761 OPS after the All-Star break while continuing to build trust with pitchers. Still, with their catching options dwindling, the Cubs had to make a move.'' Amaya was the Cubs' Opening Day starter but Kelly started the second game in that series against the Dodgers in Tokyo, then had a five-RBI game on March 31, in his third start. He followed that up with a three-run homer in his first start at Wrigley Field and steadily hit his way into the middle of the order. The cost to add the 30-year-old Kelly was $11.5 million over two seasons, with a $7.5-million mutual option for 2027. That looks like one of the best bargains in last winter's free-agent market, especially with Amaya expected to miss four-six weeks with a strained left oblique. Amaya, who was having a nice season himself (.280 with four homers, 25 RBI and an .818 OPS in 27 games), injured himself making a throw on May 24. The Cubs promoted veteran Reese McGuire to back up Kelly. McGuire was signed to a minor-league contract in January and was hitting .280 with an .827 OPS at Triple-A Iowa. Kelly had accrued 5.9 fWAR in his first nine seasons. Fangraphs' calculations have him at 1.5 through 38 games this season. Despite being in a time-share with Amaya for most of the season, he ranks behind only the Dodgers' Will Smith among National League catchers in fWAR. Look for Kelly to receive strong consideration for next month's All-Star Game. He is batting .268 with nine homers and a .913 OPS through Wednesday and, per Statcast, is doing an average job behind the plate (despite a -1 grade for framing). Kelly's contract pays him $5 million in 2025 and '26, and includes a $1.5 million buyout for the '27 option. He will add $250,000 if he starts 81 games and another $250,000 for 91 starts. With bat-first prospect Moises Ballesteros crushing the ball in Triple-A (.333 with six homers and an .886 OPS), the Cubs are positioned to possibly trade a catcher. But they're rightfully focused on the postseason after a 38-23 start, making the surplus most likely an issue for the off-season, not the mid-season trade deadline. They're in the enviable position of having depth at the catcher's spot. That's a significant edge they picked up without having to spend heavily.

Days after controversy erupted during the NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville Superspeedway, Carson Hocevar confirmed that he got in touch with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. It all began after Hocevar crashed into Stenhouse Jr. from behind, causing him to lose control of his No. 47 car. He then crashed into the wall and finished the race in last position. Hocevar, on the other hand, secured second place. Stenhouse Jr. recently reported that Hocevar had not called him, and even hinted at retaliation in the upcoming race in Michigan. For his arc, I thought he was gonna go run the middle with the 54 [Ty Gibbs] running the bottom and thought I could get in a little deeper and have his spotter call inside and he just came all the way down and I landed into his left rear. Backed him into the fence. I don't wanna do that and I feel bad for it, obviously, for wrecking somebody's race car. "I think the biggest thing is the story we want is the fact we ran second with the 77 car. Don't think anyone remembers Ryan Blaney won the race because all they're talking about is this so far. I think that's the biggest thing is we don't want to slow ourselves down by having these clouds over our heads just as a team or put any more targets on my back. I've created the world I live in of that reputation; I understand that. You don't want to do anything more to put a bigger target on your back."
