Telangana Deputy CM Vikramarka launches broadside against BRS leaders over Kaleshwaram project

The Hindu5 hours ago

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has criticised BRS leaders for 'shamelessly' promoting the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) as a 'mega project' despite serious safety concerns raised by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA). The NDSA has flagged the project as extremely dangerous, citing discrepancies between its design and actual construction.
Speaking at a public meeting in Bhupalpally on Tuesday, Mr. Vikramarka launched a scathing attack on the previous BRS government, alleging that ₹1 lakh crore was misappropriated in the name of KLIP. 'How can BRS leaders call this an engineering marvel,' he asked.
He referred to the collapse of piers and structural flaws in the Medigadda barrage, pointing out that the NDSA had confirmed the construction did not match the approved design. In contrast, he said, irrigation projects built by successive Congress governments, such as SRSP, Sripada Yellampally, Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam, have stood the test of time without such failures.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Vikramarka and IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu inaugurated a 33/11 kV sub-station and laid foundation stones for three power sub-stations worth ₹8.70 crore in the district.
Continuing his attack on the previous administration, Mr. Vikramarka blamed the Kaleshwaram project fiasco on the undue interference of BRS leaders in engineering decisions. He said qualified engineers were sidelined and political interference compromised the integrity of the design and construction.
Highlighting the Congress government's achievements, he pointed out that Telangana recorded a peak power demand of 17,162 MW in March 2025 — 2,000 MW more than March 2023 during the BRS regime — without a single minute of power interruption. He called it a significant milestone in the State's power sector performance.
Mr. Vikramarka also said the government had released ₹16,000 crore to power utilities under the 24-hour free power scheme for farmers. In addition, free power is being supplied to 50,000 families (up to 200 units) and all government institutions.
Later, at a review meeting with senior officials of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) in Bhupalpally, the Deputy Chief Minister urged the management to diversify into other mining sectors beyond coal to adapt to evolving market trends. He also suggested appointing consultants to assess global demand and availability of critical minerals.
He said strengthening the SCCL, a public sector enterprise with over 45,000 employees, is a key goal of the State government to ensure livelihood opportunities for future generations. He emphasised that the entire region spanning the vast coal belt must benefit in terms of welfare and development.

Halt Goalpara eviction, give land to affected: Cong to CM

1 2 3 4 5 6 Guwahati: Senior Congress leader and leader of the opposition in Assam assembly, Debabrata Saikia, wrote to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma , urging him to stay the eviction in Goalpara and to provide alternate land to those evicted and those yet to be evicted. A total of 667 families were evicted for allegedly encroaching over 600 bighas of land at Hasilabeel village under Balijana revenue circle in lower Assam's Goalpara district. The families mostly belong to the Bengali-speaking Muslim community, officials said. Saikia urged the CM to direct the Goalpara district commissioner not to evict the people until the CM meets with the people of the village on June 18. "We have already stated that we will cooperate with the govt to free the land from encroachers, subject to compliance with various guidelines issued by the Supreme Court, and also laws and rules enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly for eviction of landless people and rehabilitation, in case they are evicted from govt land, Khas land, reserve land, etc," he added. He said it was apparent that the people occupying the land in question were living there as they had no alternative land to build their houses and provide shelter to their families. He also directed a Congress delegation, led by chief whip of the party in the Assembly Wazed Ali Choudhury, to visit the eviction site at the earliest and submit a memorandum to the governor, urging him to ensure fair practice and extend all help for rehabilitation, in case eviction of citizens is carried out from the presently occupied land by the govt as per rules. On the other hand, an eight-member Congress delegation was stopped by Assam Police and local authorities from visiting the eviction site. Police put up barricades at Hashila Beel in Goalpara to stop the Congress MLAs from proceeding.

River link project will not harm interests of upstream states: Andhra Pradesh irrigation minister Nimmala Ramanaidu

1 2 Vijayawada: Denouncing the Telangana leaders' allegations, Andhra Pradesh irrigation minister Nimmala Ramanaidu said that Godavari- Banakacherla project will not harm the interests of upstream states including Telangana. Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, Ramanaidu said that about 3,000 TMC ft of water from the Godavari River is going waste into the sea every year. He said that Godavari is the only river in the world where 50 lakh cusecs of water flow at a time. "We will use only the floodwaters of the Godavari available at Polavaram. We will divert only the surplus water that currently flows wastefully into the sea to Banakacherla," the minister asserted. Ramanaidu stated that Andhra Pradesh will not utilise the assured water available in Godavari River that has been allocated to other states. He added that AP, the last riparian state on the river, could not utilise the water allocated to the upstream states. It was not possible for AP to divert net water available in the river, the minister noted, reiterating that the Polavaram–Banakacherla project will not harm the interests of upstream states in any way. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like เทรดทองCFDs กับโบรกเกอร์ที่เชื่อถือได้ | เรียนรู้เพิ่มเติม IC Markets สมัคร Undo The irrigation minister said that there is no ground for apprehensions on the issue. He stressed that it was not correct for the Telangana leaders to make the utilisation of flood waters a controversy to raise the regional tempers. He requested Telangana leaders to desist from making unnecessary controversy of the Banakacherla project. He also said that AP is ready to clarify all the doubts of the upstream states, and that, they wanted to take the surplus water to feed the drought-prone Rayalaseema region. He said that Rayalaseema will benefit in terms of both irrigation and drinking water through Banakacherla project. "Telangana leaders should keep in mind their own past actions before making comments against AP," said Ramanaidu. He said that Telangana govt went ahead with award of contracts to various irrigation projects without obtaining proper permissions. "Projects like Kaleshwaram, Sitarama Sagar, Palamuru–Ranga Reddy, and Sammakka Barrage were initiated without clearances. The TRS leaders should keep in mind that former chief minister K Chandrasekhara Rao took up several projects without clearances from the Centre despite objections from AP. They do not have any right to question AP's good intentions," said Ramanaidu. He said that farmers in downstream states will suffer if projects were executed by upstream without proper planning and permission. He said that lower catchment areas have special rights, which must be respected by the upstream states. "We never had any malicious intent to halt projects in Telangana. In fact, chief minister Chandrababu Naidu has extended support to several projects in Telangana in the past. It is unwise for Telangana leaders to create unneeded controversy," said Ramanaidu.

Congress: Govt delaying caste census, its intention is to grab headlines

A day after the notification for the upcoming Census was issued by the Centre, the Congress on Tuesday hit out at the government, alleging that the caste census was being delayed and the government's intention appears to be to 'grab headlines and manage the narrative'. Congress general secretary Sachin Pilot also said the objective cannot just be to collect data on an individual's caste but to understand the living conditions of families and create policies to improve their lives.
