Sabah's GDP growth promising
KOTA KINABALU: With Sabah's gross domestic product (GDP) showing an increase in growth in 2024, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has called for a paradigm shift to ensure that all development plans are implemented successfully.
Hajiji said the GDP growth of RM83.2bil last year against the RM82.1bil recorded in 2023 reflected a momentum of continuous improvement and positive development in Sabah.
He said it was in line with the national GDP, which is expected to increase by 2.5% through the Madani Economy Framework that saw the restructuring of Malaysia's economy under the national Budget 2025.
'We must change our attitude to not just focus on the negatives without evaluating or giving credit to the successes or contributions made to the state,' Hajiji said when chairing the State Development Action Council meeting at Menara Kinabalu here yesterday.
'If we continue to contribute our energy positively through close cooperation from various quarters in the state, it is not impossible to successfully implement our Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya ( Hala Tuju SMJ) aspirations.'
He also urged the relevant agencies to ensure all initiatives and programmes under the 12th Malaysia Plan and the development blueprint are implemented to spur economic growth and uplift the people's livelihood.
Under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the Chief Minister revealed the state government has formulated a State Strategic Development Hala Tuju as a proactive step to spur Sabah's economy and development from 2026 to 2030.
'It is also an early framework that takes into consideration the policy, blueprint and current development plan. Various initiatives will be initiated encompassing the Blue Economy initiative and each state development agenda under the 13MP,' he said.
Despite the various successes through the Hala Tuju SMJ initiatives and positive figures from all the released data to date, Hajiji said the state government must not become complacent.
'We must continue to work hard and be more proactive. All department and district-level heads must go down to the ground more frequently to monitor ongoing projects.
'This is important to ensure that all programmes are done well and thoroughly,' he said, adding that this year, 1,265 projects must be completed in Sabah.
'All the implementing agencies must constantly monitor these projects' progress and ensure they are completed according to schedule,' he said.
According to him, Sabah is among the highest recipients of the national Budget, with RM6.7bil allocated by the Federal Government this year.
'This proves that the voices of the people and leaders of Sabah are heard at the federal level. It also demonstrates that we are very serious and will strive to boost the state's development.'

[UPDATED] GRS leaders endorse decision to work with PH for Sabah election
KOTA KINABALU: The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah supreme council has endorsed the decision to work with Pakatan Harapan, said coalition secretary-general Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. "The supreme council of GRS convened tonight and, among other matters, discussed preparations for the upcoming 17th State Election, which will be held in the near future. "The GRS supreme council has decided to continue its cooperation with PH. "We will be sitting at table with the PH leadership in the near future to determine the allocation of seats to be contested by each party," he told reporters after the two-hour meeting. Present to chair the meeting which began at 8.30pm was GRS chairman and Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah president Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The other seven component party presidents were also present. Among them were Parti Bersatu Sabah acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam; Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan; Sabah Progressive Party president Datuk Yong Teck Lee; Parti Cinta Sabah president Tan Sri Anifah Aman; and, United Sabah National Organisation president Tan Sri Pandikar Amin. Recently, when Hajiji announced the GRS-PH cooperation, it was reported that many GRS leaders were shocked by the statement. However, Hajiji denied those rumours and responded that the decision had been agreed among presidents. Masidi said the GRS-PH partnership has greatly contributed to stabilising politics in Sabah and has allowed the state government to focus on efforts to develop Sabah, including addressing issues related to basic infrastructure. "As part of its preparations for the election, GRS maintains its position that local parties should play leading roles in the cooperation to be agreed upon with PH. "The GRS supreme council did not discuss or touch on any cooperation with other parties in relation to the election."

Sabah Govt prioritises ethnic cultural heritage preservation
Hajiji accompanying Tun Musa visiting the exhibition booths at the Rumpun Bajausamah Cultural Festival. TUARAN (Aug 10): The State Government always supports any non-governmental organisation (NGO) that organises activities aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of the various ethnic groups in Sabah, as long as they do not overlap with similar government-organised programmes. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said that the organisation of arts and cultural programmes, such as the Rumpun Bajausamah Cultural Festival, can elevate the state's cultural treasures to a higher level, thereby enhancing the state's image at the global stage. Such programmes also strengthened the bonds of unity among the local community, regardless of race or religion, he said at the opening of the Rumpun Bajausamah Cultural Festival at the Rumpun Bajausamah Cultural Centre at Lok Batik here on Sunday. The event was graced by Head of State, Tun Musa Aman and his wife, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin. 'In line with the festival's theme 'Budaya Tradisi Teras Perpaduan Malaysia Madani', it becomes the responsibility of the Rumpun Bajausamah Association to uphold the unity agenda as a central cause. This is because the goal of elevating our cultural heritage is to create harmony and preserve unity. 'For generations, and centuries, the people of this state have practised a way of life rounded in mutual respect, cooperation, and helping one another regardless of skin colour or religious belief,' he said. Hajiji said the spirit of togetherness and mutual tolerance among the people of this state has shaped Sabah society into one with a unique yet captivating identity. 'With 35 ethnic groups and 217 sub-ethnic groups present within the Sabah community, our society is indeed diverse and truly plural in the Malaysian context. 'Even so, the people of Sabah continue to live in harmony with a strong sense of unity, in line with the slogan 'Unity in Diversity',' he said. The Chief Minister said there are great benefits and wisdom in living harmoniously and in unity, whether it is unity within families, organisations, associations, communities, or the nation. 'Only through unity can we become strong, respected, and admired. If we are divided and disunited, we will become weak and easily dominated by others who wish to control or colonise us. Indeed, unity and strength are the keys to our success and progress,' he said. In the context of the Rumpun Bajausamah Association, he said it also aspires to be like other cultural or ethnic associations that serve as custodians and preservers of their people's traditional customs, ultimately nurturing the unity spirit among the rakyat. 'If this noble movement is sustained and further strengthened, God willing, we can develop Sabah not only in terms of physical development but also as a state rich in its community cultural and traditional values,' he said. Hajiji believed that through festivals such as this, with a variety of carefully curated events, including traditional dance competitions like Limbai and Runsai, the Bintang Soromas (singing) competition, and the Betitik competition, new talents in each respective field can be unearthed while preserving cultural heritage. Meanwhile, highlight events like the Ratu Serimpak (traditional beauty pageant) competition not only serve as a major attraction of the festival, but also showcase the quality of weaving arts and the ethnic Bajau motifs displayed in the garments worn by the participants. Hajiji also paid tribute to Tun Musa for his support to the formation of the Rumpun Bajausamah Association 12 year ago and in the development of the Rumpun Bajausamah Cultural Centre in Lok Batik beginning in 2017 during his tenure as Chief Minister of Sabah.
