Your 'Twilight' refresher as the series turns 20

USA Today8 hours ago

What is it about paranormal romance that's oh-so swoon-worthy?
'Twilight' is among the most popular vampire love stories across books and movies – generations are still debating Edward Cullen vs. Jacob Black.
The fandom persists two decades later, inspiring scores of die-hard readers, fanfic (we're looking at you, 'Fifty Shades of Grey') and still-relevant quotes like 'Bella! Where the hell have you been, loca?' The series also showed that female-led stories could be blockbusters, paving the way for fantasy favorites like 'The Hunger Games' and 'Divergent.'
As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first book's publication, here's your definitive guide to the Stephenie Meyer universe.
How many books are in the 'Twilight' series?
There are four books in the 'Twilight' series, but technically seven in the world of 'Twilight' as Meyer wrote two companion novels and a novella that reimagine or dive deeper into the story.
'Life and Death' is 'Twilight' reimagined. This gender-swapped novel turns Bella and Edward's story into Beaufort and Edythe, letting a female vampire take the lead.
'Midnight Sun,' Meyer's latest release, is 'Twilight' from Edward's perspective.
'The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner' is a novella told from the perspective of one of the newborn vampires in Victoria's coven, introduced in 'Eclipse.' It follows her friendships, romance and the mysteries of vampire life beyond hunting Bella and the Cullens.
When did the 'Twilight' books come out? 'Twilight' books in order
Here are all the 'Twilight' books by Stephenie Meyer in order of release:
Who wrote 'Twilight'?
Stephenie Meyer wrote 'Twilight.' She was inspired by a dream about a girl and a sparkly vampire talking in a meadow.
Meyer would eventually become USA TODAY's Author of the Year in 2008 after she captured the top four spots on our Best-selling Booklist, something no author had done before. She's written two other books outside of "Twilight": "The Host" and "The Chemist."

Jeff Bezos' Venice wedding creates travel chaos for tourists in the floating city

As Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez celebrate their lavish three-day wedding (June 24–28) this week in Venice, tourists are finding the city's charm a bit crowded and commodified. Protesters in Venice claimed a significant win after Jeff Bezos and his wedding party relocated their main celebration from the city center to the Arsenale. While the original venue of Scuola Grande della Misericordia was never officially confirmed, the BBC reported that local officials say the last-minute change was prompted by growing pressure from activists opposed to the billionaire's high-profile festivities. Situated in the eastern Castello district of the city, the reported new venue is said to be more isolated, surrounded by water and only land-accessible via bridges that can be raised. Three luxury hotels are officially booked and some water taxis reserved for the wedding, the local press is swarming the event with paparazzi and mega‑yachts crowding canals. Tourists report unexpected closures, rerouted traffic, and a paparazzi-heavy ambiance. Wedding festivities are anticipated to take place around some of the city's most central locations, with Venice City Hall mandating the closure of the area surrounding the medieval church Madonna dell'Orto on Wednesday for a Thursday night open-air gathering of guests. Officials said the Police Headquarters of Venice is handling the city's security operations for the wedding. The police department did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment. Nevertheless, some residents and vendors welcome the influx – pointing out 80% of wedding provisions are sourced from Venetian artisans, according to The Associated Press – while others condemn it as a multimillion-dollar 'city rental' at the expense of ordinary life. "Those who bring investment, create jobs, and bolster Venice's global standing will always be welcome here," Deputy Mayor of Tourism Department Simone Venturini said in a statement to USA TODAY. "We will continue to strive for a city that balances hospitality with the protection of its unique heritage, guided by both vision and equilibrium." Abbott Elementary star lost her bags on vacation: What you're owed if it happens to you.

Even celebrities have travel headaches sometimes. Sheryl Lee Ralph, best known these days for playing kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard on the hit ABC show "Abbott Elementary" posted on social media Tuesday about how her bags had been lost by the airline on a trip to Italy. The post, which included a meme from her character on the show, put a positive spin on the setback, with Ralph writing "I am making the choice to be happy and enjoy Italy because it's easy for one bad experience to spoil many great ones." Woke up this morning and still have not received my luggage from @ITAAirways but I am making the choice to be happy and enjoy Italy because it's easy for one bad experience to spoil many great ones. — sheryl lee ralph (@thesherylralph) June 24, 2025 Airlines are generally pretty good about baggage handling, but their officials recognize it's extremely frustrating for travelers when they get it wrong. According to the Department of Transportation, U.S. airlines on average mishandled 0.6 of every 100 bags transported in 2024, a 0.1 point increase over 2023. Want to ride an airport bag belt?: You can't, but we can show you where they go. If a bag is never recovered, passengers are entitled to compensation for their lost goods. Airlines are allowed to cap their damage liability to $4,700 for domestic flights or about $1,700 for international itineraries, according to the DOT. Carriers are allowed to exclude some things from their liability responsibility on domestic itineraries, including fragile or perishable items, electronics, cash and other valuables, so long as those exceptions are disclosed in the airline's contract of carriage. For delayed bags, airlines are required by the DOT to provide reasonable compensation to travelers for daily incidentals. The DOT suggests filing a lost luggage claim as soon as possible if your bag does not show up on the belt after your flight. Fortunately, for Ralph, her luggage was recovered. In a later post on Tuesday, she shared a picture of her suitcases with the caption, "The bags have arrived!!!!!"
