Tennessee man gets scammed out of $26K for '63 Corvette on Facebook Marketplace — here's how he fell for it

An East Tennessee man's dream of owning a classic 1963 Corvette turned into a $26,000 disaster after falling victim to a sophisticated Facebook Marketplace scam. The victim, Jim Maidens, a disabled former registered nurse and car enthusiast, wanted the true classic so much he was willing to pay the price, sight unseen. Don't miss Thanks to Jeff Bezos, you can now become a landlord for as little as $100 — and no, you don't have to deal with tenants or fix freezers. Here's how I'm 49 years old and have nothing saved for retirement — what should I do? Don't panic. Here are 6 of the easiest ways you can catch up (and fast) Want an extra $1,300,000 when you retire? Dave Ramsey says this 7-step plan 'works every single time' to kill debt, get rich in America — and that 'anyone' can do it 'He said it was in excellent shape,' Maidens told reporters. 'I asked him if he had driven it? He said, 'Yes, he did drive it, and it drove perfect. '' But what he didn't realize was that there was no car to pick up, and his money had vanished. Now, he's sounding the alarm on a tried-and-true Facebook Marketplace scam that continues to fleece unsuspecting buyers out of money. Here's what you need to know to stay safe. The fantasy car that turned out to be pure fiction Maidens knows about Corvettes — he owns several, all purchased locally. So when he found some used models on sale on Facebook, his interest was quickly piqued. 'Well, on this page, there are three or four Corvettes. A 1969 for $38,000. There's a '73 for $11,800,' he said. And when he spotted what appeared to be an incredible deal — a vintage Corvette priced at just $26,000 with a $750 delivery fee — he believed he'd hit the jackpot. Fearing another buyer might snatch up the deal, Maidens wired the full amount without seeing the vehicle in person. The seller provided seemingly legitimate paperwork, including a bill of sale with VIN number and electronic signature. 'He called me, as I remember, and said that he had gotten the wire and that the car would be loaded on the weekend and would be here on Monday,' said Maidens. 'The car never showed up. I tried to reach him, and I'm blocked.' '$26,750 bucks,' he said. 'Boom, gone. Once I was blocked from communicating with him, then I knew it was all over.' Read more: Do you own rental properties in the US? How to spot a fraudulent Facebook Marketplace listing When Maidens finally contacted authorities, a deputy managed to reach the scammer by phone, but the trail immediately went cold. 'As soon as he knew he was a police officer, he hung up and blocked him,' said Maidens. Maiden fell victim to what's known as an advanced payment scam, which involves a seller requesting payment up front for an item they never intend to deliver. These scams are especially common on listings for big-ticket items like vehicles or rentals. The warning signs? Drastically underpriced vehicles The seller profile features multiple suspiciously cheap listings Generic descriptions are reused across multiple listings by the same seller The seller requests switching all communication to email Claims of being abroad with offers to deliver for a "refundable deposit" Mentions of working with transport companies (when selling cars) The seller uses stolen company details from small dealers or logistics firms The listing photos are stolen from genuine Autotrader or eBay listings Fortunately, there are steps you can take to go after the fraudulent seller to get your money back: Contact the seller directly first. Many marketplace issues can be resolved through direct communication with the seller before escalating. Document all evidence. Take screenshots of conversations, listings, transactions, and receipts, as this documentation is critical for reporting. Report the scam to Facebook. If the seller won't cooperate, use Facebook's reporting system by finding the listing. On Facebook, go to "Options" → "Report Listing" → "Scam" to alert moderators. Contact your payment provider. Immediately dispute charges with your bank, credit card company, or PayPal, which typically offer buyer protection programs for unauthorized or fraudulent transactions. Failing that, you can perform a chargeback if you used a credit card. Report to the authorities. File complaints with the FTC ( IC3 ( and local law enforcement to create an official record of the fraud. Facebook does provide purchase protection for some items bought through Facebook Marketplace. This free security protection applies if: You didn't receive your order. The product arrived damaged or different from the description in the listing. The seller didn't follow their stated refund policy. The purchase was unauthorized. The seller has been removed from Facebook. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, purchasers like Maidens are exempt. Facebook Purchase Protection does not cover orders over $2,000, services, or vehicles. As for Maidens' advice, looking back? 'Don't buy anything without having it physically present,' he told reporters. Eccentrica Pacchetto Titano is a track-focused Lamborghini Diablo restomod

Eccentrica Pacchetto Titano is a track-focused Lamborghini Diablo restomod originally appeared on Autoblog. But Is It Too Nice To Risk Taking To A Circuit? For 2025 Monterey Car Week, San Marino-based restomod firm Eccentrica is rolling out a more track-focused version of its Lamborghini Diablo upgrade package. Designed for "occasional track days," according to the company, the Titano Package sharpens the Diablo in a way Lamborghini never did when the V12 supercar was in production. The package includes suspension changes, a new ECU map, and subtle styling changes, all of which will be shown off on a new build called the Pacchetto Titano at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering. Eccentrica is also bringing two other cars—dubbed Rose Phoenix and Green Dragon—to demonstrate configuration possibilities. Stiffer Suspension, Quicker Throttle Response View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article Those suspension changes consist of stiffer springs and a recalibration of the adaptive dampers for "heightened lateral responsiveness and precision feedback, without compromising comfort on spirited canyon roads," according to an Eccentrica press release. The other major mechanical change is an ECU remap that "enhances throttle response across the rev range," according to Eccentrica. The company didn't mention any changes in output, but for reference its standard tune for the Diablo's 5.7-liter V12 delivers 542 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. That power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. Hope You Like Carbon Fiber View the 4 images of this gallery on the original article It wouldn't be a track-day special without carbon-fiber aerodynamic aids, and the Titano Package checks that box. A fixed carbon-fiber rear wing, as well as some other small changes to the bodywork, help increase downforce without dramatically altering the looks of the car. Lightweight wheels with carbon-aluminum construction, in a staggered 19-inch front/20-inch rear setup, are also part of the package. In addition to the wheels, changes to the cooling ducts for the Brembo braking system help further reduce unsprung mass. The Pacchetto Titano doubles down on that with exposed carbon-fiber bodywork, but customers will presumably be able to choose paint as well. The car also has a fire-suppression system and Alcantara upholstery with billet aluminum accents, along with a compact steering wheel with blue center stripe. Eccentrica didn't break out pricing for the Titano Package, but its builds start at $1.4 million, not including the cost of a donor car. The company plans to build just 19 of its Eccentrica V12 restomods, and aims for each build to be unique. Collector-Grade 2019 Corvette ZR1 Convertible Hits the Auction Block

The Corvette has long been Chevrolet's proof that world-class performance doesn't have to come with a stratospheric price tag. The latest C8 Corvette ZR1 is no exception. Priced from $174,995, it is the most expensive Corvette ever built (before the all-new electrified ZR1X), though still significantly cheaper than its European counterparts from Ferrari, Lamborghini, and McLaren. For that figure, Chevrolet delivers staggering performance: a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter LT7 V8 producing 1,064 horsepower and 828 lb-ft of torque, capable of sprinting from zilch to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds. Real-world drag races have shown it outpacing both the Ferrari SF90 and Lamborghini Revuelto despite costing less than a third of their price. However, $175,000 is still steep, especially for those seeking Corvette performance without crossing into exotic-car pricing. That's where the C7 ZR1 comes in. The last front-engine Corvette is still exceptional in today's standards, and one example has surfaced on Bring a Trailer with minimal mileage – a perfect opportunity if you're not a fan of the current midship 'Vettes. The C7 Corvette ZR1 Convertible up for grabs is a 2019 model, finished in black over Jet Black leather and equipped with the ZTK Track Performance Package. It's in excellent condition with only 6,000 miles on the clock. At its heart sits a supercharged 6.2-liter LT5 V8 producing 755 hp and 715 lb-ft of torque, coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an electronic LSD. An aftermarket X-pipe has been added, and an oil change was performed before sale. The ZTK package, of course, adds an adjustable high rear wing, front splitter end caps, stiffer springs, and revised tuning for Magnetic Ride Control. Additional features include carbon-ceramic brakes with Brembo calipers, exposed carbon-fiber aero components, and Satin Graphite staggered wheels. Inside, the cabin is anchored by Competition Sport bucket seats and offers conveniences such as a head-up display, navigation, a Bose sound system, and keyless entry. The odometer confirms the 6,000-mile reading, while Carfax maintains that the car has no accident history. At the time of writing, bidding stands at $130,000. Considering its condition, limited mileage, and track-focused specification, the figure shows that the C7 ZR1 is still desirable, even with the crown already passed on to the mid-engine C8 models. While it may not match the outright numbers of the latest C8 ZR1, it retains a unique appeal as the last of the front-engine Corvettes. For those unwilling to pay the nearly $175,000 starting price of the new car, this 2019 example presents a blend of rarity, performance, and heritage that keeps the C7 ZR1 firmly in the conversation.
